Skin friction of prebored and precast pile may be one of the most critical factors affecting the bearing capacity and settlement. Special attention was given to the interface behavior of pile-cement milk-surrounding soil when the load is acting on the prebored and precast pile. The cases of single pile were analyzed through a three-dimensional finite element approach and pile loading tests. A series of numerical analyses of the interface of pile-cement milk-soil was conducted with the proposed t-z curve and field measurements. It is shown that the use of cement milk around the pile increases the skin friction and reduces the pile settlement. It is also known that the suggested t-z curve between the cement milk and the soil, enhances the accuracy of the numerical analysis results.
When embankments are constructed on soft clay deposit, unsymmetrical surcharges due to embankments may generate the excessive vertical settlement and lateral deformation of soft clay foundation. The excessive deformations in soft grounds cause not only stability problem of the embankment itself but also that of the adjacent structures. The objectives of this research are to study the deformational behavior of soft ground due to the embankment load with different loading and soil conditions. Five model tests are carried out with different test conditions. From the results of the model tests, it is concluded that the lateral displacement induced by the embankment load occurs in the range of two times of the embankment width from a toe. In addition, the relationship between loading rate, v, and the vertical settlement of the soft ground, ${\Delta}s$, and the lateral displacement at the toe of embankment, ${\Delta}y_m$, is investigated based on the model test results.
The differential settlement between the foundations causes the critical damage on the transmission tower constructed in soft ground. Connected-pile foundation for transmission tower structures is an option to prevent the differential settlement. It consists of main foundations and connection beams that are placed between the individual foundations at each corner of tower. In this study, 24 model pile load tests were conducted at a construction site in jeonlabuk-do to investigate the effects of the connection beams on transmission tower foundation. In model tests, various load conditions and connection beam conditions were considered. As the test results, the displacements of connected-pile foundation differed in accordance with load directions. The settlements of connected-pile foundation decreased with the increased stiffness of connection beams, lateral load capacity decreased in accordance with load height, and the lateral load capacity on the failure criteria was similar regardless of load direction.
Post-construction subgrade settlement especially differential settlement, has become a key issue in construction and operation of non-ballasted track on high-speed railway soil subgrade, which may also affect the dynamic performance of passing trains. To estimate the effect of differential subgrade settlement on the mechanical behaviors of the vehicle-slab track system, a detailed model considering nonlinear subgrade support and initial track state due to track self-weight is developed. Accordingly, analysis aiming at a typical high-speed vehicle coupled with a deteriorated slab track owing to differential subgrade settlement is carried out, in terms of two aspects: (i) determination of an initial mapping relationship between subgrade settlement and track deflections as well as contact state between track and subgrade based on a semi-analytical method; (ii) simulation of dynamic performance of the coupled system by employing a time integration approach. The investigation indicates that subgrade settlement results in additional track irregularity, and locally, the contact between the concrete track and the soil subgrade is prone to failure. Moreover, wheel-rail interaction is significantly exacerbated by the track degradation and abnormal responses occur as a result of the unsupported areas. Distributions of interlaminar contact forces in track system vary dramatically due to the combined effect of track deterioration and dynamic load. These may not only intensify the dynamic responses of the coupled system, but also have impacts on the long-term behavior of the track components.
The transition is the zone where support stiffness suddenly increases in the railway industry. If the support stiffness increases, differential settlement will occur at the transition due to difference of stiffness, and the differential settlement causes problems for the train running safety and the roadbed that supports the track. In particular, a study on differential settlement at bridge-earthwork transition was only conducted to considering railway load in most cases. However, these studies have not taken account of earthquake despite earthquake has been occurred frequently in the recent, and it is necessary to consider earthquake. Therefore, in this study numerical analysis has been performed by changing the inclination of approach block, which determines the shape of the transition, and earthwork in order to verify the effect of the shape of the transition on the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition. The result shows that the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition was affected by the shape of transition.

This research work presents 3-D behavior of adjacent structures due to tunnelling induced ground movements by means of field measuring data and nonlinear FEM tunnel analysis. The results of the analytical methods from Mohr-Coulomb model are compared with the site measurement data obtained during the twin tunnel construction. It was found that the location and stiffness of the structure influence greatly the shape and pattern of settlement trough. The settlement trough for Greenfield condition was different from the trough for existing adjacent structures. Therefore the load and stiffness of adjacent structures should be taken into account for the stability analysis of the structures.
SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method that forms a composite ground by driving compacted sand piles into the soft ground. This method is one of the soil improvement techniques for reinforcing and strengthening soft ground deposits. This thesis describes the investigation on the behavior of soft ground reinforced with SCP by low improvement ratio. Direct shear test and consolidation test carried out to verified behavior of composite ground reinforced with SCP. Test results were discussed with reference to the amount of consolidation settlement, variation of shear resistance with area replacement ratio and effect of the stress concentration. And, laboratory model loading test carried out to verified the effect of the location and failure mode of reinforced embankment. Residual shear strength varies with the area replacement and constrict load in the low replacement ratio. Calculated stress concentration ratio overestimate than proposed valve by experimental, theoretical and analytical method. As regards the location, improving right below of the top of the slope was more effective than below of the toe of the slope. This thesis carried out to obtain fundamental information of behavior of the composit ground. Hereafter, centrifuge test that reproduce stress state of the in-situ must be necessary through the further study about pile penetration, reinforce position and construct time.
In this study, a large-scale laboratory model test, 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses were conducted to verify the reinforcement effect by utilizing geotextile bag on the railway roadbed. Static loading which simulated train load was applied on the geotextile bag-reinforced railway roadbed and also unreinforced railway roadbed, Computer program named Pentagon which is a part of FEM programs was used in the numerical analysis. Based on the results of laboratory test, 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses, the effect of load distribution and settlement reduction was found to be depending on the geotextile characteristics, tensile strength of geotextite, and interface friction angle between geotextile bags. In general, the result of 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses shows lower value than that of laboratory test. Also, the result of 3-D numerical analyses shows lower value than that of 2-D numerical analyses because of its stress transfer effect.

Before getting to the actual study of the load distribution factor in various excavating methods, this research is preliminarily focused on the comparison of two different excavation methods, CD cut method and Ringcut method. Especially, the purpose of this research is to study the behavioral mechanism of two tunnels which share the same construction environment but different excavating method. Two numerical analysis models with the same tunnel section and material properties are compared in this study, and they are analyzed by 3D Finite Element Analysis. In each model, face stability, crown displacement, ground settlement, and shotcrete-lining stress are computed. Thus, the general behavior of CD cut method and Ringcut method are studied, and it certified what should be considered for the calculation of the load distribution factor.
Three-dimensional finite element analysis of 1,300 ton stainless water reservoirs was undertaken to consider differential settlement effects of the reservoir when subjected to earthquake loads. The earthquake load for large (>1,000 ton) water reservoirs are further determined using a specification established from the Korean Standards Association. The structural behavior of water reservoirs with differential settlements can be heavily dependent on seismic loading effects. Stress and displacement distributions are induced for various load combinations, including for with and without differential settlements. From numerical examples, the induced maximum displacements of the water reservoirs largely increase with differential settlements compared to those without differential settlements.
