  • Recently, probabilistic assessments of nuclear power plant components have generated interest in the nuclear industries, either for the efficient inspection and maintenance of older nuclear plants or for improving the safety and cost-effective design of newly constructed nuclear plants. In the present paper, the partial safety factor (PSF) of wall-thinned nuclear piping is evaluated based on a reliability index method, from which the effect of each statistical variable (assessment parameter) on a certain target probability is evaluated. In order to calculate the PSF of a wall-thinned pipe, a limit state function based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) concept is first constructed. As for the reliability assessment method, both the advanced first-order second moment (AFOSM) method and second-order reliability method (SORM) are employed to determine the PSF of each probabilistic variable. The present results can be used for developing maintenance strategies considering the priorities of input variables for structural integrity assessments of wall-thinned piping, and this PSF concept can also be applied to the optimal design of the components of newly constructed plants considering the target reliability levels.

  • Recently, PWM cycloconverters that are frequency conversion system have been studied for eliminating do links of conventional converter and inverter systems. A new real-time method for generating PWM patterns is proposed in this paper. This method realizes sinusoidal input and output currents, controllable input displacement factor regardless of load power factor, and maximum output voltage range. Finally, feasibility of the proposed method is confirmed by simulation and experiments.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of omitting low-amplitude cycles from a flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests were conducted on 2124-T851 aluminum alloy specimens. Three test spectra were generated by omitting small load ranges as counted by the rain-flow count method. The crack growth test results were compared with the data obtained from the flight-simulation loading. The experimental results show that the ranges equal to or smaller than 5% of the maximum load do not contribute to crack growth behavior because these are below the initial stress intensity factor range. Omitting these from the flight-simulation loading, test time can be reduced by 54%. However, in the case of omitting the load ranges below 15% of the maximum load, crack growth rates decreased, and crack growth curve deviated from the crack growth data under the flight-simulation loading because loading cycles above fatigue fracture toughness were omitted.

  • The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance according to the change of apply load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and the wear test results exhibited as following ; The epoxy matrix composites showed lower coefficient of friction compared to the neat epoxy through the whole sliding distance. As increasing the sliding velocity the epoxy matrix composites indicated lower coefficient of friction, whereas the neat epoxy showed higher coefficient of friction as increasing the sliding velocity. The specific friction work of both materials were increased with apply load. In case of the epoxy matrix composites, the running in periods of friction were reduced as increase in apply load. The epoxy matrix composites were improved the wear resistance by adding the nano silica particles remarkably. It is expected that the load carrying capacity of the epoxy matrix composites will be improved by increase of Pv factor.

  • For the reliability evaluation of the track drive unit(TDU), firstly, we analyzed the major failure modes through FMEA(failure mode & effects analysis), FTA(failure tree analysis), and 2-stage QFD(quality function deployment), and then quantitatively determined the priority order of test items. The Minitab analysis was also performed for prediction of life distribution and parameters of TDU by use of field failure data collected from 430 excavators for two years. In addition, we converted the fluctuation load in field conditions into the equivalent load, and for evaluation of the accelerated lift by the cumulative fatigues, the equivalent load is again divided into the fluctuation load by reference of test time. And then, by use of the test method in this paper, the acceleration factor(AF) of needle bearing inside planetary gear which is the most weakly designed part of TDU is achieved as 5.3. This paper presents the quantitative selection method of test items for reliability evaluation, the determination method of the accelerated life test time, and the method of non-failure test time based on a few of samples. And, we proved the propriety of the proposed methods by experiments using a TDU for a 30 ton excavator.

  • Most of hard disk drives currently employ fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) for their rotor support. Stiffness of the FDB is affected by many design factors such as bearing clearance, fluid viscosity, and rotational speed. For the high rotating speed HDDs stiffness of the rotor is normally high enough to accomodate load disturbances. However small form factor HDDs that are to be operated in low power consumption are often designed with low stiffness rotors. Although the low stiffness rotor clearly benefits low power operation, it could damage the entire motor structure or head disk interface even by a light mechanical load disturbance such as shock or vibration. In addition, since a single channel HDD does not provide gram load equilibrium in axial direction the rotor could be tilted and make a hard contact to stator. A non-symmetric groove pattern could successfully compensate the tilted rotor angle during operation.

  • This paper proposes a new reliability evaluation for traction power system. The electric railway consists of traction power systems, various vehicles, operating equipment, track, overhead line and electric equipment. It is a fundamental function of traction power systems that supply customers with reasonable price, acceptable reliability and high quality power. In a general way, the power system reliability deals with the ability to satisfy load demands in supply capability or rating of every factor. On the other hand, the reliability of traction power systems has been focused on train time delay caused by power outage. In this paper, we make a selection optimum reliability indices for the reliability evaluation of electric traction power systems. The reliability study not only applies a plan for traction supply system after detecting the vulnerable point of existing traction supply systems but also makes a role in stable operating railway.

  • In this paper, a power electronic converter which is composed of two converters - bidirectional AC/DC converter and Series Active Power Filter (SAPF), is discussed. Structural schemas and ways of operation of control systems of converters, which are used to eliminate non sinusoidal parts of the network source voltage, are presented. At the same time, the control used stabilizes the value of the voltage feeding the load. Taking in consideration the combined functions which the device executes, it may be called Unified Voltage Conditioner - UVC.

  • Recently, the interest on power quality has been hot issue because the equipments cause voltage disturbance and have become more sensitive to the voltage disturbance. Additionally, the reseach on power electronic equipments applying to the high power has been increased. This paper deals with Line-Interactive Dynamic Voltage Restorer(LIDVR) system using 7-Level H-Bridge inverter, which is one of the solutions to compensate the voltage disturbance and to increase the power of equipments. The LIDVR has the following advantages comparing to the DVR with the series injection transformer. It has the power factor near to unity under the condition of normal source voltage, can compensate the harmonic current of the load and the instant interruption, and has the fast response. First, the construction, the operation mode and algebraic modeling of LIDVR are reviewed. And then the voltage control algorithm is proposed to get the sinusoidal load voltage with constant amplitude. Finally, simulation and experiment results verify the proposed LIDVR system.

  • The modified sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) is one of the PWM techniques used in three-phase AC-DC buck converters. The modified SPWM works without the current sensor (the converter is current sensorless), improves production of sinusoidal AC current, enables obtainment of near-unity power factor, and controls output voltage through modulation gain (ranging from 0 to 1). The main problem of the modified SPWM is the huge starting current and voltage (during transient) that results from a large step change from the reference voltage. When the load changes, the output voltage significantly drops (through switching losses and non-ideal converter elements). The single-input single-output (SISO) approach with minor-loop voltage feedback controller presented here overcomes this problem. This approach is created on a theoretical linear model and verified by discrete-model simulation on MATLAB/Simulink. The capability and effectiveness of the SISO approach in compensating start-up current/voltage and in achieving zero steady-state error were tested for transient cases with step-changed load and step-changed reference voltage for linear and non-linear loads. Tests were done to analyze the transient performance against various controller gains. An experiment prototype was also developed for verification.
