  • As power systems grow more complex and power demands increase, the fault current tends to gradually increase. In the near future, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker rating for some substations, which is an especially important issue in the Seoul metropolitan area because of its highly meshed configuration. Currently, the Korean power system is regulated by changing the 154kV system configuration from a loop connection to a radial system, by splitting the bus where load balance can be achieved, and by upgrading the circuit breaker rating. A development project applying 154kV Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) to 154kV transmission systems is proceeding with implementation slated for after 2010. In this paper, SFCL is applied to reduce the fault current in power systems according to two different application schemes and their technical impacts are evaluated. The results indicate that both application schemes can regulate the fault current under the rating of circuit breaker, however, applying SFCL to the bus-tie location is much more appropriate from an economic view point.

  • In the proto design stage of a new car, the performance of an occupant protection system is often evaluated by CAE instead of the real test. CAE predicts and recommends the appropriate design values hence reducing the number of the real tests. However, the existing researches using CAE in predicting the performances do not consider the uncertainties of parameters, in which inconsistency between the actual test results and CAE exists. In this research, the optimization procedure of a protection system such as airbag and load limiter is suggested for the frontal collision. The DACE modeling known as Kriging interpolation is introduced to obtain the meta model of the system followed by the tabu search method to determine a global optimum. Finally, the distribution of a suggested design is determined through the Monte-Carlo Simulation.

  • Recently, power-electronics equipments or machine that microprocessor is included and computers have been installed continuously in industrial process or region of electronics customer. So concern for power quality, especially sags has been increased. Because those equipments are very sensitive to sags. The sag is phenomenon that magnitude of load voltage temporarily decreases because of power system fault. If a certain equipment in industrial process have any trouble result from sag, it can cause utility to be charged for enormous economics loss. Therefore it need to analyze the characteristic of sag and then mitigation method for sags in distribution system in oder to increase reliability. This paper gives an overview of sags characteristic due to short circuit fault in distribution system and after a general discussion of the various forms mitigation, gives a sags mitigation method with concentrating on mitigation-device interface method, especially FCL that is Fault Current Limiter.

  • As the load density of KEOCO system is higher, the fault current can be much higher than SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker. Even though there are several alternatives to reduce fault current, as the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL (High Temperature Superconductivity Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. This study presents the application of HTS-FCL in real customer system.

  • The design of automobile occupant seat belt system has been studied by using MADYMO. Based on the FMVSS 208 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208) and the USNCAP (United States New Car Assessment Program) regulations, seat belt design parameters were chosen for the design improvement to the 5th percentile female dummy: limit force of load limiter, time to fire of shoulder belt, inlet length of shoulder belt, inlet length of lap belt. The design of experiment method was employed to optimize the design parameters of passenger seat belt. Range of injury probability due to the change of H-point position was estimated by the simulation.

In this paper, the resistive and inductive SFCLs are applied to re-duce the fault current in Korean power system and their technical and economic impacts are evaluated. The results show that the application of SFCL can eliminate the need to upgrade the circuit breaker rat-ing and the economic potential of SFCL is evaluated positively.

  • To verify the feasibility of bifilar winding type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using BSCCO tape, two types of magnets were fabricated and tested by short-circuit in this research. Even if the FCL using high Tc superconducting (HTS) tape has zero resistance in normal state, it needs to be wound as a bifilar winding for zero inductance. Solenoid type and pancake type bifilar winding magnets are designed and fabricated with the same length of BSCCO tape. The test system consists of AC power supply, transformer, fault switch, load and bifilar winding magnet. The applied AC voltages during fault duration, 0.1s, were from 0.5V to 20V. The test results without bifilar winding magnet were compared with those with each type magnets. The test results include voltage against magnet, transport current and generated resistance curve. Thermal stability, the recovery time, was studied from the results of two type magnets. The pancake type was the most effective to limit fault current but the solenoid type was thermally the most stable. From this research, short-circuit characteristics of the two types were obtained.

  • We experiment to analyze on current limiting and recovery characteristics of trigger type SFCL as the composition of the contact. Generally, some superconductor of SFCL is relatively largely loaded due to limit the fault current by oneself and recovery time is affected until the fault cleared. However, in the fault, the proposal trigger type SFCL transfer the fault current to current limiting reactor(CLR) using power switch so it could reduce the recovery time and load of the superconductor. However, because of applying the additional power switches, that could generate some power loss. Therefore, to solve this problem, we proposed the composition method of the double contact for a trigger type SFCL and analyzed on current limiting and recovery characteristics for ones.

  • As the popularization of autonomous vehicles is anticipated, it is expected that the variety of passenger postures will diversify. However, the current vehicle safety system is expected to be inadequate for accommodating these diverse passenger postures, particularly in reclined positions where severe injuries have been reported in frontal collisions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the biomechanical responses and tolerances of occupants in reclined postures. In this study, the behavior and injuries of a Hybrid-III dummy model in a reclined position are analyzed through frontal collision sled simulations equipped with the semi-rigid seat provided by the previous study, three-point safety belt with pretensioner and load limiter, and airbag models. The results are evaluated by comparing thouse reponses with post-mortem human surrogate (PMHS) data, and the findings are expected to be applicable to the basic design of a new restraint system suitable for various postures in autonomous vehicles.
