In mechanical analysis of spacecraft structures situations appear where static and dynamic loads must be considered simultaneously. This could be necessary either by load definition or preloaded structures. The superposition of these environments has an impact on the load and stress distribution of the analysed structures. However, this superposition cannot be done by adding both load contributions directly. As an example, to compute equivalent Von Mises stresses, the phase information must be taken into account in the stress tensor superposition. Finite Element based frequency response solvers do not allow the calculation of superposed static and dynamic responses. A manual combination of loads in a post-processing task is required. In this paper, procedures for static and harmonic loads superposition are presented and supported by analytical and finite element-based examples. The aim of the paper is to provide evidence of the risks of using different superposition techniques. Real application examples such as preloaded mechanism structures and propulsion system tubing assemblies are provided. This study has been performed by the Structural Engineering department of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH Friedrichshafen.

This paper reviews most of the research done in the field of tensile buckling characteristics pertaining to aerospace structural elements with special attention to local buckling and parametric excitation due to periodic loading on plate and shell elements. The concepts of buckling in aerospace structures appear as the result of the application of a global compressive applied load or shear load. A less usual situation is the case, in which a global tensile stress creates buckling instability and the formation of complex spatial buckling pattern. In contrast to the case of a pure compression or shear load, here the applied macroscopic load has no compressive component and is thus globally stabilizing. The instability stems from a local compressive stress induced by the presence of a defect, such as a crack or a hole, due to partial or non-uniform applied load at the far end. This is referred to as tensile buckling. This paper discusses all aspects of tensile buckling, theoretical and experimental. Its far reaching applications causing local instability in aerospace structural components are discussed. The important effects on dynamic stability behaviour under locally induced periodic compression have been identified and influences of various parameters are discussed. Experimental results on simple and combination resonance characteristics on plate structures due to tensile buckling effects are elaborated.
The finite element stress analysis of large sized rectangular water tank structures made of stainless steel materials is carried out for various combined load cases. The combined load cases for a large size of 5,000ton are further determined using the specification(KS B6283) established from the Korean Standards Association. The changed water capacity due to the size of reservoirs could be heavily dependent for evaluating seismic effects, especially for large reservoirs. For the better numerical efficiency, the rectangular panels are modelled using the ANSYS ADPL module. The numerical results obtained for different load cases mainly show the effect of the interactions between the different load combination and other various parameters, for example, the water capacity, and different stainless steel materials. The structural performance for various load combinations is also evaluated.
This paper presents an improved method to estimate the maximum load level for heavily loaded power systems with the load-generation variation vector by using the elliptic pattern of the P-e curve. The previous study suggested a simple technique of removing e-f coupling, where only high voltage load flow solutions to calculate transforming angle of system reference is needed. The proposed algorithm is improved to require only one load flow solution at a specific load level in addition to the operating point at the beginning stage, which reduces the computation time and the iteration number of estimation. The proposed method can be efficiently applied to heaviIy loaded systems with the combination of CPFlow when the reactive power limit and ULTC are considered. In this paper, the effect of ULTC on the estimation of maximum loadability index is also investigated. The proposed algorithm is tested on New England 39 bus system and IEEE 118 bus system.
Extensible elastica solutions of two-dimensional deflection of crimped fiber cantilever of circular wavy crimp were obtained for one end clamped boundary under concentrated, inclined and dead tip load Fiber was also regarded as a linear elastic material. Crimp was described as a combination of semicircular arcs smoothly connected with each other having constant curvature of all the same magnitude and alternative sign. Also the inclined load direction was taken into account. The solutions were expressed as the recursive forms of integrals in two different cases, which can also be transformed to elliptic integrals respectively. Comparing the data with inextensible ones was carried out. Consequently in the solution, the normal strain of neutral axis is expressed in terms of cross-sectional area, second moment of area and normalized load parameter. Examples of the circular cross-sectioned fiber are presented. As a result, the differences of normalized load between inextensible and extensible elastica solutions when the radius ratio becomes 0.1 were maximum $\Lambda$ = 0.1.
Load bearing capacity of dowel type fasteners loaded perpendicular to the shear plane is determined based on Johansen's yield theory (Johansen, 1949). In case of inclined screws whose axis is no longer perpendicular, the ultimate load of connection increases because of additional axial withdrawal capacity. To calculate load bearing capacity for inclined screws, KBC2016 and Eurocode5 provide design equations using the combination of two effects; axial and bending strength. Although their equations have been validated for a long time, there is still minimal information how to apply them for concrete-CLT joints. Since there are not many test data available, engineers have to make certain assumptions and thus results may look inconsistent in practice. In this paper, authors would like to describe the current approach and assumptions indicated by KBC2016 and Eurocode 5 and how they match the experimental results in terms of shear strength of CLT-concrete connections. To fulfill the objective, several push-out tests were performed on nine different test specimens. Each specimen has different penetration angles and depths. By analyzing load-displacement curves, the maximum shear strength, stiffness, and ductility were obtained. Shear strength values were compared with the current design codes and theoretical equations proposed in this paper. Observations on stiffness and ductility were briefly discussed.
It is required more precise analysis for practical load because of complexities and varieties of vehicle structure. To establish the numerical model, many researchers have been developed designing tools for linking F.E. Analysis results and experimental results. There studies have generally focused on each experimental method or analytical method separately. There are few studies based on both methods. This paper conceives new procedure for the determination of the load direction and magnitude applied on mechanical structures. New procedure is the combination of the analytical and empirical method with analyzed strain by F.E. Analysis under unit load and with measured principal stress by strain gages under driving load, respectively. In this paper, we theorize the procedure of practical load determination and make the validity and the practicality of the procedure with the application to T-shape jointed structure. F.E. Analysis is conducted to get the principal stress on arbitrary points in the F.E. model of T-shape joint under unit load. Then experiment is carried out to get the principal stress on the same points of F.E. model. To demonstrate the actual driving condition, the load conditions are bending and torsion. From these two data sets, the magnitude, the direction and the position of load can be obtained. Theory and practice do not always coincide; since there are some errors such as ill-poseness, measuring error and modeling error in experimental data, we examine the proper method of error minimization.
Purpose: The container terminal is an area that plays an important role in the country's import and export. As the volume of containers increased worldwide, competition between terminals became fiercer, and increasing the productivity of terminals became more important. Re-handling is a serious obstacle that lowers the productivity of terminal. There are two ways to reduce re-handling in the terminal yard. The first method is to load containers in terminal yards using effective carry-in algorithms that reduce re-handling. The second method is to carry out effective remarshalling. In this paper, the performance of various carry-in algorithms and various remarshalling algorithms are reviewed. Next, we try to find the most effective combination of carry-in algorithm and remarshalling algorithm. Research design, data and methodology: In this paper, we analyze the performance of the four carry-in algorithms, AP, MDF, LVF, RP and the four remarshalling algorithms, ASI, ASI+, ASO, ASO+. And after making all the combinations of carry-in algorithms and remarshalling algorithms, we compare their performance to find the best combination. To that end, many experiments are conducted with eight types of 100 bays through simulation. Results: The results of experiments showed that AP was effective among the carry-in algorithms and ASO+ was effective among remarshalling algorithms. In the case of the LVF algorithm, the effect of carrying in was bad, but it was found to be effective in finding remarshalling solution. And we could see that ASI+ and ASO+, algorithms that carry out remarshalling even if they fail to find remarshalling solution, are also more effective than ASI and ASO. And among the combinations of carry-in algorithms and remarshalling algorithms, we could see that the combination of AP algorithm and ASO+ algorithm was the most effective combination. Conclusion: We compared the performance of the carry-in algorithms and the remarshalling algorithms and the performance of their combination. Since the performance of the container yard has a significant effect on the performance of the entire container terminal, it is believed that the results of this experiment will be effective in improving the performance of the container terminal when carrying-in or when remarshalling.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the biomechanical effects of three different constrained types of an artificial disc on the implanted and adjacent segments in the lumbar spine using a finite element model (FEM). Methods : The created intact model was validated by comparing the flexion-extension response without pre-load with the corresponding results obtained from the published experimental studies. The validated intact lumbar model was tested after implantation of three artificial discs at L4-5. Each implanted model was subjected to a combination of 400 N follower load and 5 Nm of flexion/extension moments. ABAQUS$^{TM}$ version 6.5 (ABAQUS Inc., Providence, RI, USA) and FEMAP version 8.20 (Electronic Data Systems Corp., Plano, TX, USA) were used for meshing and analysis of geometry of the intact and implanted models. Results : Under the flexion load, the intersegmental rotation angles of all the implanted models were similar to that of the intact model, but under the extension load, the values were greater than that of the intact model. The facet contact loads of three implanted models were greater than the loads observed with the intact model. Conclusion : Under the flexion load, three types of the implanted model at the L4-5 level showed the intersegmental rotation angle similar to the one measured with the intact model. Under the extension load, all of the artificial disc implanted models demonstrated an increased extension rotational angle at the operated level (L4-5), resulting in an increase under the facet contact load when compared with the adjacent segments. The increased facet load may lead to facet degeneration.
