The aim of this study is to cross-validate of spatial probability model, artificial neural network at Boun, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations were identified in the Boun, Janghung and Youngin areas from interpretation of aerial photographs, field surveys, and maps of the topography, soil type, forest cover and land use were constructed to spatial data-sets. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect and curvature of topography, were calculated from the topographic database. Topographic type, texture, material, drainage and effective soil thickness were extracted from the soil database, and type, diameter, age and density of forest were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the Landsat TM image satellite image. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslideoccurrence factors by artificial neural network model. For the validation and cross-validation, the result of the analysis was applied to each study areas. The validation and cross-validate results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing data on landslide locations.
Compressional wave velocity (Vp), shear wave velocity (Vs), elastic and physical properties, and electrical resistivity for two core sediments obtained from Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) were measured and computed. The sediments consist of homogeneous mud (mostly silt and clay) with shells and shell fragments. As a result, the mean grain size is uniform ($7.5-8.5{\Phi}$ throughout the core sediments. However, physical properties such as wet bulk density and porosity show slightly increasing and decreasing patterns with depth, compared to the mean grain size. The compressional (about 1475 m/s in average) and shear wave (about 60 m/s in average) velocities with depth accurately reflect the pattern of wet bulk density and porosity. Electrical resistivity is more closely correlated with compressional wave velocity than physical properties. The computed Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratios are relatively higher (more than 10) and lower (approximately 0.002) than Hamilton's (1979) data, respectively, suggesting the typical characteristics of soft and fully water-saturated marine sediments. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio in soft and unconsolidated sediments is not likely sufficient to examine lithology and sediment properties. Relationships between the elastic constant and physical properties are correlated well. The elastic constants (Poisson's ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus) given in this paper can be used to characterize soft marine sediments saturated with seawater.
136 cut slopes which extends from Namyangju to Chunchon city along the 46th national highway were investigated to analyze the influence factors affecting slope instability. Geologic and geotechnical conditions were examined and the detailed investigation were carried out for fifty five failed slopes. failure mode (wedge failure, planar failure, circular failure, sheet eroison and rock falls) are examined with respect to slope inclination, rock type, weathering grade and discontinuity patterns. It is suggested that the failure modes and their dimensions have relations to the morphology and geologic conditions of the slopes. Wedge failure has highest is the most frequent failure mode and falls, sheet erosions, planar failures and circular in descending order of failure percentage. Wedge failure is most dominant failure type over all lithology except quartzite formation. In slopes of well foliated and banded gneiss, failure ratio of wedge is up to 50% ca. Failure ratio(number of rock fall/number of total failure) of rock fall increases with increase fo slope inclinations and decrease of weathering grade. Dimension analyses of failed slopes shows wedge and circular failure has higher value of D/L and D/H than planar failure and sheet erosion.
The chemical compositions of natural gases and isotopic compositions of hydrocarbon gases were analyzed to characterize the properties of the gases which were found in the exploratory wells from offshore Korea, as well as those dissolved in the ground water onshore in the Pohang area. Natural gases from the offshore area mainly consisted of hydrocarbon gases $(97.98{\~}100{\%})$. The gases were composed of methane $(90{\~}96{\%})$ and minor amounts of heavier components up to $C_{6+}$ Hydrocarbon gases extracted from the groundwater in the Pohang area consisted of methane $(27{\~}376420 ppm)$ and ethane $(19{\~}127 ppm)$. The total amount of hydrocarbon gases was related to the lithology and geological factors surrounding the reservoir. The quantity of the hydrocarbon gases tended to Increase in the Tertiary reservoirs and in the reservoirs where the Tertiary formations were thickly distributed. According to the methane contents, composition of hydrocarbon gases, and stable isotope data, gases from offshore wells are identified as thermogenic in origin, generated during catagenesis stage of the oil window. On the otherhand, based on the methane content $(>99.9\%)$ and isotopic composition $(\delta^{13} C^;\; -73.1{\sim}\;-43.22{\%}_{\circ})$, it is interpretated that the gases from the Pohang area are predominantly composed of biogenic origins, which were generated by the methanogenic bacterial processes under low temperatures and anoxic conditions.
The weight-of-evidence model one of the Bayesian probability model was applied to the task of evaluating landslide susceptibility using GIS. Using the location of the landslides and spatial database such as topography, soil, forest, geology, land use and lineament, the weight-of-evidence model was applied to calculate each factor's rating at Boun area in Korea where suffered substantial landslide damage fellowing heavy rain in 1998, The factors are slope, aspect and curvature from the topographic database, soil texture, soil material, soil drainage, soil effective thickness, and topographic type from the soil database, forest type, timber diameter, timber age and forest density from the forest map, lithology from the geological database, land use from Landsat TM satellite image and lineament from IRS satellite image. Tests of conditional independence were performed for the selection of the factors, allowing the 43 combinations of factors to be analyzed. For the analysis, the contrast value, W$\^$+/and W$\^$-/, as each factor's rating, were overlaid to map laudslide susceptibility. The results of the analysis were validated using the observed landslide locations, and among the combinations, the combination of slope, curvature, topographic, timber diameter, geology and lineament show the best results. The results can be used for hazard prevention and planning land use and construction
The studied area is largely occupied by thick piles of the late Cretaceous volcanic rocks of the Yucheon group, which is northeastern border part of the vast volcanic region in the Yucheon basin. The Yucheon group overlies the Geoncheonri Formation and is intruded by granitic and dioritic stocks and dykes. The group can be devided into two parts; the lower is Jusasan andesitic rocks which was called as Jusasan Porphyrite Formation by Tadeiwa in 1929, and the upper is Unmunsa rhyolitic rocks. The volcanic pile consists mainly of various tuffs such as tuff breccia, lapilli tuff, coarse to fine tuff and tuffaceous sediments, and interlayered flows, which range from basaltic andesite to rhyolite in their lithology. The results of petrochemical and volcanostratigraphic studies on the Jusasan andesitic socks suggest that the volcanic rocks were derived from two cyclic evolutions of magmatic fractionation. Systematic study of 5226 joints from the area reveals two sets of steep joints striking $N20^{\circ}-40^{\circ}E$ and $N40^{\circ}-70^{\circ}W$, are dominant and coincide with the fault pattern developed in the area. Three defferent maximum principal stress axes were recognized from conjugate shear joints, which are trending east-west, north-northwest, and north-northeast.
In the present study, we applied various machine learning techniques comparatively for prediction of subsurface structures based on multiple secondary information (i.e., well-logging data). The machine learning techniques employed in this study are Naive Bayes classification (NB), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and logistic regression classification (LR). As an alternative model, conventional hidden Markov model (HMM) and modified hidden Markov model (mHMM) are used where additional information of transition probability between primary properties is incorporated in the predictions. In the comparisons, 16 boreholes consisted with four different materials are synthesized, which show directional non-stationarity in upward and downward directions. Futhermore, two types of the secondary information that is statistically related to each material are generated. From the comparative analysis with various case studies, the accuracies of the techniques become degenerated with inclusion of additive errors and small amount of the training data. For HMM predictions, the conventional HMM shows the similar accuracies with the models that does not relies on transition probability. However, the mHMM consistently shows the highest prediction accuracy among the test cases, which can be attributed to the consideration of geological nature in the training of the model.

In this study, influence of different stone powders (SP), including limestone powders (LP), quartzite powders (QP), and granitic powders (GP), on the hydration behaviors of portland cement, for example, setting time, hydration heat, and hydration products, were discussed. The initial and the final setting time both shorten when the content of LP is 5 %, however, they are slightly delayed by the other two SPs. The LP has no obvious influence on the arrival time of the first peak in the exothermal curves, and it makes the peak value decrease; the other two SPs postpone the appearance of the first peak, and they also make the peak value decrease. For the second peak, LP shifts the peak position to the left, QP has no effect on this peak position, and GP makes the appearance of this peak delayed by 143 min. Similarly, three kinds of SPs have different influence on the hydration products of portland cement. The LP precipitates the formation of hydrated calcium carbo aluminate, the QP the formation of hydrated garnet, and the GP makes the amount of Tobermorite increase.

Piezovibrocones have been developed to evaluate the liquefaction potential of onshore soils, but have not yet been utilized to evaluate the in-situ liquefaction behavior of offshore marine and volcanoclastic sediments. Two static and vibratory CPTu (Cone Penetration Tests) were performed at Tauranga Harbor, New Zealand. The lithology is known from nearby drillholes and the influence of vibration on different types of marine soils is evaluated using the reduction ratio (RR) calculated from static and vibratory CPTu. A sediment layer with high potential for liquefaction and one with a slight reaction to cyclic loading are identified. In addition to the reduction ratio, the liquefaction potential of sediment is analyzed using classic correlations for static CPTu data, but no liquefaction potential was determined. This points to an underestimation of liquefaction potential with the classic static CPTu correlations in marine soil. Results show that piezovibrocone tests are a sensitive tool for liquefaction analysis in offshore marine and volcanoclastic soil.
