The Performance of Li/V6O13 Lithium Polymer Battery (Li/V6O13 리튬 폴리머 전지의 성능)

  • The performance of The performance of $Li/V_6O_{13}$ cell and the electrochemical properties of polymer electrolyte based on poly(acrylonitrile)[PAN] was investigated. The ionic conductivity of polymer electrolyte showed $2.3{\times}10^{-3}S/cm$ and the compatibility with lithium electrode was excellent. Also, it showed the electrochemical stability up to 4.3V(vs. $Li^+/Li$). The cell reaction of $Li/V_6O_{13}$ was dominated by the interfacial resistance between $V_6O_{13}$ electrode and polymer electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient of lithium ion within $V_6O_{13}$ was $2.7{\times}10^{-9}{\sim}4.2{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/sec$. The utilization of $V_6O_{13}$ active material was 95% at C/8($50{\mu}A/cm^2$) and 82% at C/4($100{\mu}A/cm^2$), respectively.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of LiFePO4 by Citrate Process (구연산염법을 이용한 LiFePO4 합성 및 전기화학특성에 관한 연구)

  • $LiFePO_4$ is a promising cathode material for secondary lithium batteries due to its high energy density, low cost and safety. $LiFePO_4$ was synthesized by the citrate process under reductive, neutral, and oxidative, atmospheres and the crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction. The samples synthesized under $N_2$ and $H_2$ atmosphere showed a single phase of a olivine structure, where the samples synthesized under $O_2$ atmosphere exhibited second phase of $Fe2O_3$. All the samples synthesized at 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere presented a single phase of olivine. Residual organic material was observed for the sample synthesized at $400^{\circ}C$. There was nearly no intensity difference between the samples synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The electrochemical characteristic of the $LiFePO_4$ synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ in the $N_2$ atmosphere was analyzed. The result exhibited an high discharge capacity of 160 mAh/g at the first cycle, and 155-160 mAh/g after 45 cycles.

Manganese Doped LiFePO4 as a Cathode for High Energy Density Lithium Batteries (고에너지밀도 리튬전지를 위한 망간이 첨가된 LiFePO4 양극재료)

  • Porous $LiMn_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}PO_4$ (LMFP) was synthesized by a sol-gel process. Uniform dispersion of the conductive carbon source throughout LMFP with uniform carbon coating was achieved by heating a stoichiometric mixture of raw materials at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 h. The crystal structure of LMFP was investigated by Rietveld refinement. The surface structure and pore properties were investigated by SEM, TEM and BET. The LMFP so obtained has a high specific surface area with a uniform, porous, and web-like nano-sized carbon layer at the surface. The initial discharge capacity and energy density were 152 mAh/g and 570 Wh/kg, respectively, at 0.1 C current density, and showed stable cycle performance. The combined effect of high porosity and uniform carbon coating leads to fast lithium ion diffusion and enhanced electrochemical performance.

State of Health and State of Charge Estimation of Li-ion Battery for Construction Equipment based on Dual Extended Kalman Filter (이중확장칼만필터(DEKF)를 기반한 건설장비용 리튬이온전지의 State of Charge(SOC) 및 State of Health(SOH) 추정)

  • Along with the high interest in electric vehicles and new renewable energy, there is a growing demand to apply lithium-ion batteries in the construction equipment industry. The capacity of heavy construction equipment that performs various tasks at construction sites is rapidly decreasing. Therefore, it is essential to accurately predict the state of batteries such as SOC (State of Charge) and SOH (State of Health). In this paper, the errors between actual electrochemical measurement data and estimated data were compared using the Dual Extended Kalman Filter (DEKF) algorithm that can estimate SOC and SOH at the same time. The prediction of battery charge state was analyzed by measuring OCV at SOC 5% intervals under 0.2C-rate conditions after the battery cell was fully charged, and the degradation state of the battery was predicted after 50 cycles of aging tests under various C-rate (0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5C rate) conditions. It was confirmed that the SOC and SOH estimation errors using DEKF tended to increase as the C-rate increased. It was confirmed that the SOC estimation using DEKF showed less than 6% at 0.2, 0.5, and 1C-rate. In addition, it was confirmed that the SOH estimation results showed good performance within the maximum error of 1.0% and 1.3% at 0.2 and 0.3C-rate, respectively. Also, it was confirmed that the estimation error also increased from 1.5% to 2% as the C-rate increased from 0.5 to 1.5C-rate. However, this result shows that all SOH estimation results using DEKF were excellent within about 2%.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is one of the composite materials, which has a unique property that is lightweight but strong. The CFRPs are widely used in various industries where their unique characteristics are required. In particular, electric and unmanned aerial vehicles critically need lightweight parts and bodies with sufficient mechanical strengths. Vehicles using the battery as a power source should simultaneously meet two requirements that the battery has to be safely protected. The vehicle should be light of increasing the mileage. The CFRP has considered as the one that satisfies the requirements and is widely used as battery housing and other vehicle parts. On the other hand, in the battery area, carbon fibers are intensively tested as battery components such as electrodes and/or current collectors. Furthermore, using carbon fibers as both structure reinforcements and battery components to build a structural battery is intensively investigated in Sweden and the USA. This mini-review encompasses recent research trends that cover the classification of structural batteries in terms of functionality of carbon fibers and issues and efforts in the battery and discusses the prospect of structural batteries.

Structural Behavior of Mixed $LiMn_2O_4-LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ Cathode in Li-ion Cells during Electrochemical Cycling

  • The research and development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) are intensified due to the energy crisis and environmental concerns. In order to meet the challenging requirements of powering HEV, PHEV and EV, the current lithium battery technology needs to be significantly improved in terms of the cost, safety, power and energy density, as well as the calendar and cycle life. One new technology being developed is the utilization of composite cathode by mixing two different types of insertion compounds [e.g., spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $LiMO_2$ (M=Ni, Co, and Mn)]. Recently, some studies on mixing two different types of cathode materials to make a composite cathode have been reported, which were aimed at reducing cost and improving self-discharge. Numata et al. reported that when stored in a sealed can together with electrolyte at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, the concentrations of both HF and $Mn^{2+}$ were lower in the can containing $LiMn_2O_4$ blended with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ than that containing $LiMn_2O_4$ only. That reports clearly showed that this blending technique can prevent the decline in capacity caused by cycling or storage at elevated temperatures. However, not much work has been reported on the charge-discharge characteristics and related structural phase transitions for these composite cathodes. In this presentation, we will report our in situ x-ray diffraction studies on this mixed composite cathode material during charge-discharge cycling. The mixed cathodes were incorporated into in situ XRD cells with a Li foil anode, a Celgard separator, and a 1M $LiPF_6$ electrolyte in a 1 : 1 EC : DMC solvent (LP 30 from EM Industries, Inc.). For in situ XRD cell, Mylar windows were used as has been described in detail elsewhere. All of these in situ XRD spectra were collected on beam line X18A at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using two different detectors. One is a conventional scintillation detector with data collection at 0.02 degree in two theta angle for each step. The other is a wide angle position sensitive detector (PSD). The wavelengths used were 1.1950 ${\AA}$ for the scintillation detector and 0.9999 A for the PSD. The newly installed PSD at beam line X18A of NSLS can collect XRD patterns as short as a few minutes covering $90^{\circ}$ of two theta angles simultaneously with good signal to noise ratio. It significantly reduced the data collection time for each scan, giving us a great advantage in studying the phase transition in real time. The two theta angles of all the XRD spectra presented in this paper have been recalculated and converted to corresponding angles for ${\lambda}=1.54\;{\AA}$, which is the wavelength of conventional x-ray tube source with Cu-$k{\alpha}$ radiation, for easy comparison with data in other literatures. The structural changes of the composite cathode made by mixing spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $Li-Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ in 1 : 1 wt% in both Li-half and Li-ion cells during charge/discharge are studied by in situ XRD. During the first charge up to ~5.2 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, the in situ XRD spectra for the composite cathode in the Li-half cell track the structural changes of each component. At the early stage of charge, the lithium extraction takes place in the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component only. When the cell voltage reaches at ~4.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, lithium extraction from the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component starts and becomes the major contributor for the cell capacity due to the higher rate capability of $LiMn_2O_4$. When the voltage passed 4.3 V, the major structural changes are from the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, while the $LiMn_2O_4$ component is almost unchanged. In the Li-ion cell using a MCMB anode and a composite cathode cycled between 2.5 V and 4.2 V, the structural changes are dominated by the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component, with much less changes in the layered $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, comparing with the Li-half cell results. These results give us valuable information about the structural changes relating to the contributions of each individual component to the cell capacity at certain charge/discharge state, which are helpful in designing and optimizing the composite cathode using spinel- and layered-type materials for Li-ion battery research. Electrical conductivity of olivine type LiFe0.965Cr0.03B0.005PO4 and LiFe0.965Cr0.03Al0.005PO4 powders (올리빈형 LiFe0.965Cr0.03B0.005PO4 and LiFe0.965Cr0.03Al0.005PO4 분말의 전기전도도)

  • $LiFePO_4$ doped with Cr showed improved electrochemical properties as a cathode material of lithium-ion batteries compared to the undoped. The improvement was thought that the doping would raise the electronic conductivity of the compounds. The electrical conductivity of $LiFe_{0.965}Cr_{0.03}B_{0.005}PO_4$ and $LiFe_{0.965}Cr_{0.03}Al_{0.005}PO_4$ powder was measured in the temperature range from 30 to $80^{\circ}C$. The doped powders were synthesized via mechanochemical milling and subsequent heat treatment at 675~$750^{\circ}C$ for 5~10h. The doping enhanced grain growth and electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of the $LiFe_{0.965}Cr_{0.03}Al_{0.005}PO_4$ powder at $30^{\circ}C$ was $1{\times}10^{-8}S/cm$, which was higher two orders of magnitude than that of the undoped.

Electrochemical Characteristics of PFO pitch Anode prepared by Chemical Activation for Lithium Ion Battery (리튬이온전지용 화학적 활성화로 제조된 석유계 피치 음극소재의 전기화학적 특성)

  • In this study, the electrochemical performance of surface modified carbon using the PFO (pyrolyzed fuel oil) was investigated by chemical activation with KOH and $K_2CO_3$. PFO was heat treated at $390{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1~3h to prepared the pitch. Three carbon precursors (pitch) prepared by the thermal reaction were 3903 (at $390^{\circ}C$ for 3h), 4001(at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1h) and 4002 (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h). Also, the effect of chemical activation catalysts and mixing time on the development of porosity during carbonization was investigated. The prepared carbon was analyzed by BET and FE-SEM. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH could be successfully used to develop carbon with specific surface area ($3.12m^2/g$) and mean pore size (22 nm). The electrochemical characteristics of modified carbon as the anode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests. The coin cell using pitch (4002) modified by KOH has better initial capacity (318 mAh/g) than that of other pitch coin cells. Also, this prepared carbon anode appeared a high initial efficiency of 80% and the retention rate capability of 2C/0.1 C was 92%. It is found that modified carbon anode showed improved cycling and rate capacity performance.

  • A new anode composition material comprising of SiO and Graphite has been prepared by adopting High energy ball milling (HEBM) technique. The anode material shows high initial charge and discharge capacity values of 1139 and 568 mAh/g, respectively. The electrode sustains reversible discharge capacity value of 719 mAh/g at 30th cycle with a high coulombic efficiency${\sim}99%$. Since the materials formed during initial charge process the nano silicon/$Li_4SiO_3$ and $Li_2O$ remains as interdependent, it may be expected that the composite exhibiting higher amount of irreversibility$(Li_2O)$ will deliver higher reversible capacity. In this study, constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charge method was employed in place of usual constant current (CC) method in order to convert efficiently all the SiO particles which resulted high initial discharge capacity at the first cycle. We improved considerably the initial discharge specific capacity of SiO/G composite by pretreatment(CC-CV).

Effects of Pitch Softening Point-based on Soft Carbon Anode for Initial Efficiency and Rate Performance (피치계 소프트 카본 음극재 제조 시 피치의 연화점이 음극재 초기 효율 및 율속 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, required properties and optimized procedure conditions for the pitch based soft carbon anode of lithium ion battery was investigated for improving the initial efficiency and rate performance. Each petroleum residue was thermally treated at 360, 370, and $410^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours to synthesis a pitch and the corresponding pitch shows the softening point of 86, 98, and $152^{\circ}C$, respectively. The elemental analysis and thermal characteristics of the pitch were investigated by EA analysis and TGA. It was noted that the low H/C and improved thermal stability were obtained with the high softening point. The obtained pitch was carbonized at $1,200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour to produce a soft carbon based anode. As a result of investigating the crystal structure by XRD analysis, it was found that the crystallinity of soft carbon increased with increasing the softening point. It was considered that relatively higher boiling components and decreases in the evaporation component resulted the components participation for cyclization during the heat treatment process. The soft carbon based anode with an improved crystallinity shows the enhanced initial efficiency and rate performance. The mechanism of both improvements was also discusssed based on the developed crystal structure of soft carbon based anode materials.
