  • Lithium-ion cells have become the go-to energy source across all applications; however, dendritic growth remains an issue to tackle. While there have been various research conducted and possible solutions offered, there is yet to be one that efficiently rules out the problem without, however, introducing another. This paper seeks to present a fast charging method and system to which lithium-ion batteries are charged while maintaining their lifetime. In the proposed method, various lithium cells are charged under multiple profiles. The parameters of charge profiles that inflict damage to the cell's electrodes are obtained and used as thresholds. Thus, during charging, voltage, current, and temperature are actively controlled under these thresholds. In this way, dendrite formation suppressed charging is achieved, and battery life is maintained. The fast-charging system designed, comprises of a 1.5kW charger, an inbuilt 600W battery pack, and an intelligent BMS with cell balancing technology. The system was also designed to respond to the aging of the battery to provide adequate threshold values. Among other tests conducted by KCTL, the cycle test result showed a capacity drop of only 0.68% after 500 cycles, thereby proving the life maintaining capability of the proposed method and system.

  • All-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries are important in the development of next-generation energy storage devices with high energy density. However, thin-film batteries have many challenges in their manufacturing procedure. This is because there are many factors, such as substrate selection, to consider when producing the thin film multilayer structure. In this study, we compare the fabrication and performance of all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries with a $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ cathode/LiPON solid electrolyte/$Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode structure using stainless steel and Si substrates with different surface roughness. We demonstrate that the smoother the surface of the substrate, the thinner the thickness of the all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion battery that can be made, and as a result, the corresponding electrochemical characteristics can be improved.

  • The lithium-ion battery recycling process has been classified into direct recycling, hydrometallurgical process, and pyrometallurgical process. The commercial process based on the hydrometallurgical process produces black mass through pretreatment processes consisting of dismantling, crushing and grinding, heat treatment, and beneficiation, and then each metal is recovered by hydrometallurgical processes. Since all lithium-ion battery recycling processes under development conducts hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching, after the pretreatment process, to produce precursor raw materials, this article suggests a classification method according to the pretreatment method of the recycling process. The processes contain sulfation roasting, carbothermic reduction roasting, and alloy manufacturing, and the economic feasibility of the lithium-ion battery recycling process can be enhanced using unused by-products in the pretreatment process.

  • Lithium-ion batteries used for IT, automobiles, and industrial energy-storage devices have battery management systems (BMS) to protect the battery from abnormal voltage, current, and temperature environments, as well as safety devices like, current interruption device (CID), fuse, and vent to obtain positive temperature coefficient (PTC). Nonetheless, there are harmful to human health and property and damage the brand image of the manufacturer because of smoke, fire, and explosion of lithium battery packs. In this paper, we propose a systematic protection algorithm combining battery temperature, over-current, and interconnection between protection elements to prevent copper deposition, internal short circuit, and separator shrinkage due to frequent and instantaneous over-current discharges. The parameters of the proposed algorithm are suggested to utilize the experimental data in consideration of battery pack operating conditions and malicious conditions.

  • This paper deals with a method for estimating the battery state-of-health(SOH) through electrical experiments and electrochemical modeling of lithium-ion secondary battery. In order to confirm the actual battery SOH through the battery electrical aging experiment, the current integration method was used. The SOH is estimated using the internal resistance value derived from the electrical experiment. Also, in electrochemical modeling, the SOH is estimated through the change of the SEI layer with the increase of the number of cycles. The new SOH is derived by applying weighting factor to the three methods of estimating SOH, including the actual battery SOH.

  • In advancing Li-ion battery (LIB) technology, the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer is critical for enhancing battery longevity and performance. Formed during the charging process, the SEI layer is essential for controlling ion transport and maintaining electrode stability. This research provides a detailed analysis of how vinylene carbonate (VC) influences SEI layer formation. The integration of VC into the electrolyte markedly improved SEI properties. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed a connection between electrolyte decomposition and battery degradation, linked to the EMC esterification and dicarboxylate formation processes. VC facilitated the formation of a more uniform and chemically stable SEI layer enriched with poly(VC), thereby enhancing mechanical resilience and electrochemical stability. These findings deepen our understanding of the role of electrolyte additives in SEI formation, offering a promising strategy to improve the efficiency and lifespan of LIBs.

  • Recently, with the trend of information technology convergence and electrification, batteries are being widely used in fields such as industry, transportation, and specific applications. By 2030, the secondary battery market is expected to grow explosively by more than eight times compared with 2020 to $351.7 billion owing to the expanding adoption of electric vehicles. Depending on the electrochemical reactions in the electrode, a primary battery can only discharge through an irreversible reaction, while a secondary battery can be repeatedly charged and discharged using reversible reactions. According to the type of charge carrier ions, secondary batteries may be classified into those made of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and aluminum ions. We analyze the current status and technological issues of lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and solid-state batteries, which are representative examples of lithium secondary batteries. In addition, research trends in lithium secondary batteries are discussed.

  • Lithium ion secondary battery (LISB) is an energy conversion system operated via charging-discharging cycle based on Lithium ion migration. LISB has a lot of advantages such as high energy density, low self-discharge rate, and a relatively high lifetime. Recently, increasing demands of electric vehicles have been encouraging the development of LISB with high capacity. Unfortunately, it causes some critical safety issues. It includes dendrite formation on negative electrode, resulting in electric shortage problems and battery explosion. Also, the elevated temperatures occurred during the LISB operation induces thermal shrinkage of polyolefin (e.g., polyethylene and polypropylene) separators. Consequently, the low thermal stability leads to decay of LISB performances and the reduction of lifetime. In this study, sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) random copolymers were used as key materials to prepare polyolefin pore-filling separator. The resulting separators were evaluated in the term of metal ion chelation capability associated with dendrite formation, $Li^+$ ion conductivity and thermal durability.
