As the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) continues to increase, various separators are being developed to with the aim of improving the safety performance. Although poly(imide) (PI)-based separators are widely used, it is difficult to control their pore size and distribution, and this may further increase the risk associated. Herein, a melamine phosphonic acid (MP)-coated PI separator that can effectively control the pore structure of the substrate is suggested as a remedy. After the MP material is embedded into the PI separator with a simple one-step casting process, it effectively clogs the large pores of the PI separator, preventing the occurrence of internal short circuits during charging. It is anticipated that the MP material can also suppress rapid thermal runaway upon cycling due to its ability to reduce the internal temperature of the LIB cell caused by the desirable endothermic behavior around 300℃. According to experiments, the MP-coated PI separator not only decreases the thermal shrinkage rate better than commercial poly(ethylene) (PE) separators but also exhibits a desirable Gurley number (109.6 s/100 cc) and electrolyte uptake rate (240%), which is unique. The proposed separator is electrochemically stable in the range 0.0-5.0 V (vs. Li/Li+), which is the typical working potential of conventional electrode materials. In practice, the MP-coated PI separator exhibits stable cycling performance in a graphite-LiNi0.83Co0.10Mn0.07O2 full cell without an internal short circuit (retention: 90.3%).

SnSb alloy powders with excess Sn or Sb are fabricated by the high energy ball-milling of pure Sn and Sb powders with different Sn/Sb molar ratios, and then their material properties and lithium electrochemical performances are investigated. It is revealed by X-ray diffraction that SnSb alloys are successfully synthesized, and the powder size is decreased via ball-milling. Charge-discharge test using a coin-cell shows that the best result, in terms of the cyclability and the capacity after 50 cycles, comes from the electrode composed of Sn : Sb = 4 : 6, i.e. the capacity of $580mAh\;g^{-1}$ after 50 cycles. When the electrode is composed of Sn : Sb = 3 : 7, however, the capacity is noticeably decreased by the restrained Sn reaction with Li-ion. The pure SnSb alloy powders (Sn : Sb = 5 : 5) results in the second best performance. In the case of Sn-rich SnSb alloys, the initial capacity is relatively high, but the capacity is quickly fading after 20 cycles.
Si/C/CNF composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were examined to improve the capacity and cycle performance. Si/C/CNF composites were prepared by the fabrication process including the synthesis and magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling and the carbonization of phenol resin with CNF and HCl etching. Prepared Si/C/CNF composites were then analysed by BET, XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. Among SBA-15 samples synthesized at reaction temperatures between 50 and $70^{\circ}C$, the SBA-15 at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the largest specific surface area. Also the electrochemical performances of Si/C/CNF composites as an anode electrode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The coin cell using Si/C/CNF composites (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) showed better capacity (1,947 mAh/g) than that of other composition coin cells. The capacity retention ratio decreased from 84% (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) to 77% (Si : CNF = 89 : 11 in weight). It was found that the Si/C/CNF composite electrode shows an improved cycling performance and electric conductivity.
Silicon thin film were synthesized from silane and argon gas mixture directly on copper foil by rf PECVD and then lithium ion batteries were prepared from them employed as the negative electrodes without any further treatment. In the present study, two different kinds of silicon thin films, amorphous silicon and copper silicide were prepared by changing deposition temperature. Amorphous silicon film was prepared below $200^{\circ}C$, but copper silicide film with granular shape was formed by the reaction between silicon radical and diffused copper ions under elevating temperature above $400^{\circ}C$. The amorphous silicon film gives higher capacity than copper silicide, but the capacity decreases sharply with charge-discharge cycling. This is possibly due to severe volume changes. The cyclability is improved, however, by employing the copper silicide as a negative electrode. The copper silicide plays an important role as an active material of the electrode, which mitigates volume change cause by the existence of silicon and copper chemical bonding and provides low electrical resistance as well.

Non-aqueous supercapacitors by using activated C and $LiMn_2O_4$ as an active material in a positive electrode were prepared and characterized. From the cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance analysis, the capacitive effect by electric double layer of activated carbon and the faradic effect by intercalation/deintercalation of $Li^+$ ion were observed. Increasing the ratio of $LiMn_2O_4$, specific capacitances and energy densities of supercapacitor were increased. At the ratio of 0.86:0.14 ($LiMn_2O_4:C$), the maximum specific capacitance of 17.51 Wh/L and energy density of 23.83 F/cc were obtained, which were more than twice of those for a conventional electric double layer capacitor. Even after 1,000 charge/discharge cycle, the supercapacitor by using the electrode containing 14% of activated carbon and 86% of $LiMn_2O_4$ showed 60% better specific capacitance and energy density than that by using the electrode containing 100% activated carbon.

The optical properties and electrochromism of amorphous $WO_3$ thin films were studied. $WO_3$ thin films with thickness of 3000$\AA$~6000$\AA$ were deposited by vacuum evaporat.ion. All these films were transparent and found to be amorphous in structure by X-ray diffraction analysis and the visible wave length refractive indices were found to be between 1.9 and 2.1 and the optical energey gap to be 3.25 eV. Electrochromic devices were made consisting of IT0 transparent electrode, $WO_3$ thin films, $LiCIO_4$- propylene carbonate and Pt counter electrode. In terms of their operation, the amorphous $WO_3$ films were colored blue by a double injection of electrons from the transparent electrode and lithium ions from the $LiCIO_4$-propylene carbonate organic electrolyte and made colorless by electrochemical oxidation reaction. The electrochromic properties of $WO_3$ thin films including coloration and bleaching, optical density and response time were all found to be strongly dependent on the film deposition condition, electrolyte concentration, sheet resistance of the transparent electrode and applied voltage.

$Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$/carbon composite materials are synthesized from a sucrose-containing precursor. Amorphous $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3/C$ (a-LVP/C) and crystalline $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3/C$ (c-LVP/C) are obtained by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$, respectrively, and electrochemical performance as the negative electrode for lithium secondary batteries is compared for two samples. The a-LVP electrode shows much larger reversible capacity than c-LVP, which is ascribed to the spatial $Li^+$ channels and flexible structure of amorphous material. In addition, this electrode shows an excellent rate capability, which can be accounted for by the facilitated $Li^+$ diffusion through the defect sites. The sloping voltage profile is another advantageous feature for easy SOC (state of charge) estimation.

Lithium secondary batteries have become an important power source for portable electronic devices such as cellular phones, laptop computers. Presently, commercialized lithium-ion batteries use a LiCoO2 cathode. However, due to the high cost and environmental problems resulting from cobalt, an intensive search for new electrode materials is being actively conducted. Recently, solid solution LiMn1-xNixO2 have become attractive because of high capacity and enhanced safety at high voltages over 4.5 V. The Li1.6Ni0.35Mn0.65O2 compounds were conventionally prepared by a sol-gel method, which can produce the layered Li-Ni-Mn-O compounds with a high homogeneity. And by adding a graphene 2wt% the first charge-discharge voltage profiles was increased over Li1.6Ni0.35Mn0.65O2 compound. Also, the variation s of the discharge capacities with cycling showed a higher capacity retention rater. In this study, material lifecycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of Li1.6Ni0.35Mn0.65O2 & graphene 2wt% half-cell manufacturing process. The software of material life cycle assessment was Gabi. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process. The environmental loads induced by Li1.6Ni0.35Mn0.65O2 & graphene 2wt% synthesis process were quantified and analyzed, and the results showed that the amount of power had the greatest impact on the environment.

Sol-gel method which provides better electrochemical and physiochemical properties compared to the solid-state method was used to synthesize the material of $LiFe_yMn_{2-y}O_4$. Fe was substituted to increase the structural stability so that the effects of the substitution amount and sintering temperature were analyzed. XRD was used for the structural analysis of produced material, which in turn, showed the same cubic spinel structure as $LiMn_2O_4$ despite the substitution of $Fe^{3+}$. During the synthesis of $LiFe_yMn_{2-y}O_4$, as the sintering temperature and the doping amount of Fe(y=0.05, 0.1, 0.2)were increased, grain growth proceeded which in turn, showed a high crystalline and a large grain size, certain morphology with narrow specific surface area and large pore volume distribution was observed. In order to examine the ability for the practical use of the battery, charge-discharge tests were undertaken. When the substitution amount of $Fe^{3+}\;into\;LiMn_2O_4$ increased, the initial discharge capacity showed a tendency to decrease within the region of $3.0\~4.2V$ but when charge-discharge processes were repeated, other capacity maintenance properties turned out to be outstanding. In addition, when the sintering temperature was $800\~850^{\circ}C$, the initial capacity was small but showed very stable cycle performance. According to EVS(electrochemical voltage spectroscopy) test, $LiFe_yMn_{2-y}O_4(y=0,\;0.05,\;0.1,\;0.2)$ showed two plateau region and the typical peaks of manganese spinel structure when the substitution amount of $Fe^{3+}$ increased, the peak value at about 4.15V during the charge-discharge process showed a tendency to decrease. From the previous results, the local distortion due to the biphase within the region near 4.15V during the lithium extraction gave a phase transition to a more suitable single phase. When the transition was derived, the discharge capacity decreased. However the cycle performance showed an outstanding result.

A solvent-soluble polyimide (PI) polymeric binder was synthesized by a two-step reaction for silicon (Si) anodes for lithium-ion batteries. Polyamic acid was first prepared through ring opening between two monomers, bicyclo[2,2,2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BCDA) and 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA), followed by condensation reaction. Using the synthesized PI polymeric binder (molecular weight = ~10,945), the coating slurry was then prepared and Si anode was fabricated. For the control system, Si anode based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, molecular weight = ~350,000) having the same constituent ratio was prepared. During precycling, PI polymeric binder revealed much improved discharge capacity ($2,167mAh\;g^{-1}$) compared to that of using PVDF polymeric binder ($1,740mAh\;g^{-1}$), while the Coulombic efficiency of two systems were similar. PI polymeric binder improved the cycle retention ability during cycles compared to that of using PVDF, which is attributed to an improved adhesion property inside Si anode diminishing the dimensional stress during Si volume changes. The adhesion property of each polymeric binder in Si anode was confirmed by surface and interfacial cutting analysis system (SAICAS) (Si anode based on PI polymeric binder = $0.217kN\;m^{-1}$ and Si anode based on PVDF polymeric binder = $0.185kN\;m^{-1}$).
