Size reduction is one of the major pre-processing operations in using biomass as a source of energy or raw materials for forest products industry. The grinding characteristics of dried yellow poplar wood chips were investigated using laboratory knife mill with three different screen aperture diameters to provide the basic information for the optimizing of size reduction processes in biomass industry. Average specific energy consumptions were 0.157, 0.137, and 0.093 Wh/g for the screen aperture diameters of 5.0, 7.5, and 9.0 mm, respectively. According to the results of size distribution analysis of ground particles, the sizes of the most of ground particles were much smaller than the aperture diameters of the screens installed on knife mill used in this study.
This study was conducted to investigate a potential of Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) as a raw material for the manufacturing of particleboard (PB) and oriented strandboard (OSB). PB panels were prepared at the parameters of $0.7g/cm^3$ density, 15 mm thickness, three-layer, $E_1$ grade urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, emulsion wax, and hardener. OSB panels were manufactured with a density of $0.65g/cm^3$, thickness of 10 mm, and $E_1$ grade of UF resin. Particle size of the face layer of PB was 20~80 mesh with 7~9% moisture content (MC), while that of core-layer was 3~20 mesh with 3~5% MC, which was similar to the production condition of commercial PB. As a result, the manufactured PB panels with 15.8 mm thickness, $0.7g/cm^3$ density, and 5.8% MC satisfied the requirement of bending strength of 15 type PB of Korean Industrial Standard (KS F 3104). Both internal bonding (IB) strength and surface screw withdrawal resistance also satisfied the requirement of 18 type PB of the standard. But, the edge screw withdrawal resistance satisfied the requirement of 15 type PB of the standard. These differences in properties could be due to the slenderness ratio of raw particles. In case of OSB panels with 10.7 mm thickness, $0.68g/cm^3$ density, and 5.8% MC satisfied all the requirements of bending strength, screw withdrawal resistance, and IB strength of 18 type PB of the standard. These results suggest that Yellow poplar wood has a good potential as a raw material for the production of PB and OSB.
Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) has low germination rate relatively other species, so the seedling production of Yellow poplar is a hard task. Accordingly this study was conducted to determine the optimal germination conditions for healthy seedling production and to promote survival rate after afforestation. Gemination percentage was examined at different media and seed covering materials using planting flats in the greenhouse. The best germination percentage was observed in sand for media and compound soil for covering materials. But it was time to transplant, seedlings became a poor character (i.e. height, root length, number of root, dry weight) in sand for media. In order to produce healthy seedlings, each different medium was compounded with TKS-2 (this is a gardening bed soil.) in the ratio 1:1 (v/v.), and compared two conditions. Quality of seedling was better than not mixed TKS-2 into each medium. Transplanting seedlings from greenhouse to nursery grew up rapidly 2 months later (early in August~early in October). Growth amount during two months corresponded to 85.6% and 71.3% in total growth amount of height and diameter at root collar, respectively. In the case of the competition-density effect on yellow-poplar seedlings, direct seedling produced the maximum 35 standard seedlings above 8 mm of root collar diameter per $m^2$, while transplanting seedling produced the maximum 64 standard seedlings per $m^2$. And produced seedlings of two way were significantly different rootlet while axial root and lateral root was not significantly different.

This study aimed to investigate the growth and physiological characters of Liriodendron tulipifera seedlings in responses to two different levels of elevated air temperature and $CO_2$ concentration. The seedlings were grown in environment-controlled growth chambers with two combinations of air temperature and $CO_2$ conditions: (1) $22^{\circ}C$ + ambient $CO_2$$380{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$ and (2) $27^{\circ}C$ + $770{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$. Physiological characters such as growth, photosynthesis, and water use efficiency, were monitored for 85 days. The seedlings under the elevated treatment showed a greater amount of growth in tree height, compared with those under the control. Regarding the characteristics of assimilatory organs, the elevated treatment resulted in a greater amount of total leaf area, leaf unfolding, and dry weight per leaf area. No significant differences were found in photosynthesis capacity between the two treatments. The increase in water use efficiency with increased intercellular $CO_2$ partial pressure appeared overall lower in the seedling under the elevated treatment, compared with those under the control. The total leaf area of the seedlings under the elevated treatment was larger than that under the control, indicating a higher amount of photosynthesis. In addition, an increase of root growth was noted under the elevated treatment. A resistance mechanism of water stress may be attributed to a higher amount of organ growth as well as the tree height under the elevated treatment than the control.
Field performance of somatic plants (somatic embryo derived-plants) of yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) produced from somatic embryogenesis was compared with that of seedlings at age 5. In comparison of photosynthetic rate (seedling, $10.67{\mu}mol$$CO_2m^{-2}s^{-1}$; somatic plant, $9.04{\mu}mol$$CO_2m^{-2}s^{-1}$), stomatal conductance rate (seedling, 0.2 $H_2Om^{-2}s^{-1}$; somatic plant, 0.166 $H_2Om^{-2}s^{-1}$) and respiration rate (seedling, 1.71 mmol $H_2Om^{-2}s^{-1}$; somatic plant, 1.513 mmol $H_2Om^{-2}s^{-1}$), no significant differences were found between plants. The seedlings were a little higher in comparison of stomatal density (seedling, $23.33/mm^2$; somatic plant, $22.43/mm^2$), length (seedling, $25.83{\mu}m$; somatic plant, $23.46{\mu}m$) and width (seedling, $15.87{\mu}m$; somatic plant, $15.3{\mu}m$). In comparison of DNA content of the leaves using flow cytometry, no differences in ploidy level were found between the seedlings and somatic plants.
Based on fundamental properties and machining characteristics of Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), it has well performance on machinability or workability, drying, and fine surface. Additionally, yellow poplar is light weight and has bright color with high performance of bending processing, so it could be used for furniture or artworks materials and wood-based panel materials. Recently, public attention has been focused on indoor air quality, and Ministry of environment drift more tight regulation on indoor air quality for an apartment house and public facility with the times. Construction materials has been assessed emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde according to law (No.10789), so yellow poplar is also needed to assess these emission characteristics. Emission of VOC and aldehyde compounds from dry and green wood condition of yellow poplar were investigated with KS M 1998:2009. Based on results, more than 30 compounds were detected from yellow poplar, and lower NVOC (natural VOC) were emitted than AVOC (Anthropogenic VOC) and OVOC (other VOC). Formaldehyde emission was lower than $5{\mu}g/m^3$ and acetaldehyde, ketone, and propionaldehyde were detected from yellow poplar. From dry yellow poplar, m-Tolualdehyde ($33.6{\mu}g/m^3$) was additionally detected while no detection of propionaldehyde. After drying process, amount of ketone emission increased significantly. The unique smell of yellow poplar may not only come from emission of acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the influence of treatment amounts of Slurry Composting and Biofiltration liquid fertilizer (SCBLF) on biomass growth of Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and to compare bioethanol production from the harvested wood. Relative growth rate, biomass production and leaf characteristics were significantly enhanced by SCBLF treatment and medium treatment plot showed highest value. Nitrogen compounds and water content in SCBLF affected to increase chlorophyll contents which led improving biomass production (64.67%) and glucose contents (6.07%) than control. Organosolv and dilute acid pretreatments were preliminarily carried for bioethanol production, and the pretreatment processes were conducted at all the same solid to liquid ratio (1 : 10), reaction temperature ($150^{\circ}C$), preheating time (40 min) and residence time (10 min). The water insoluble solid recovery of Organosolv pretreatment with 1% sulfuric acid as a catalyst was the lowest and that of medium treatment plot was 44.81%. Exchangeable cations in SCBLF might be affected to increase pretreatment effect. The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process was followed to determine the ethanol production of the pretreated biomass. The highest ethanol production yield based on initial weight was obtained from high treatment plotby Organosolv pretreatment with 1% sulfuric acid (16.11%). But regarding biomass production, medium treatment plot produced most, and bioethanol production was increased by 72.93% than control.
Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) is an insect-pollinated tree species with large, perfect flower, and its seed sets average only about 10 percent naturally. In its controlled pollination, pollination bags are usually taken to prevent unwanted pollination, but bagging is an expensive and time-consuming process. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the need of pollination bag by estimating how much unintended pollination would occur when different cross methods were applied. Five different pollination methods were applied as follows: 1) natural open pollination (i.e. insect pollination) as a reference, 2) self-pollination; no removing reproductive organs with bagging, 3) open pollination; emasculated(removing sepal, petal and stamen) without bagging, 4) controlled pollination; emasculated with bagging and 5) controlled pollination; emasculated without bagging. Very low value of full seed rate (0.2%) was observed in method 3, it was suggested that removing stamen and petal restrict the activity of pollen vectors like bee. Difference in the full seed rate between method 4 and method 5 was not significant (27.9% versus 24.0%, respectively). Consequently, controlled pollination without bagging might be an alternative method for extensive breeding and mass production of seeds in yellow poplar.
To select $SO_2$-resistant tree species, leaf disks of 6mm in diameter, cut from the leaves of 6 species (Wistaria floribunda, Magnolia obovata, Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Acer palmatum) were floated on 25ml of testing medium and placed on laboratory under fluorescent lamp (1,500 Lux) for 20 hours. Chlorophyll content and acidity of the testing medium were measured. Testing medium was prepared by diluting $H_2SO_4$, $H_2SO_3$ and $Na_2SO_4$ with distilled water for various stoichiometric $SO_2$ concentrations, 0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm. Total chlorophyll content was more decreased after treatment than before treatment, and was decreased more severely in $H_2SO_3$ sources, followed by $H_2SO_4$ and $Na_2SO_4$, sources. Decreasing rate of total chlorophyll content was generally large in Acer palmatum. Magnolia obovata and Wistaria floribunda, and was relatively small in Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera and Robinia pseudo-acacia. Decreasing rate of chlorophyll content may be useful index for judging susceptifility of the leaf to $SO_2$. The acidity of the testing medium was generally decreased after treatment, and it means that cell leakage was occurred during treatment. The differences in medium acidity between before and after treatment may be poot index for susceptibility of the leaf to $SO_2$ owing to the difference among tree species in development of leaf mesophyll, acidity maintaining mechanism and butter capacity of the leaf tissue.
This study was conducted to investigate sensitivity of tree seedlings to $SO_2$. Visible injury symptoms and changes of ethylene production were investigated in tree seedlings with the fumigation of $SO_2$ in gas chamber 4 hours a day for six days. The symptoms of visible injury did not appear below 0.5ppm level of $SO_2$ exposure but a change of visible injury with the passage of time appeared at 1.5 and 2.5ppm in all seedlings. With the higher the concentration and/or the longer exposure of $SO_2$ the visible injury symptoms on leaves increased in all seedlings. The sensitivity of seedlings to $SO_2$ was the highest in Liriodendron tulipifera followed by Pinus strobus, Ginkgo biloba, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. The amount of ethylene production was more at 1.5 and 2.5ppm of $SO_2$ exposure than at 0.5ppm and the peak time of it came faster at higher levels. The amount of ethylene production was significantly different among tree seedlings. It showed a higher at production of ethylene in Liriodendron tulipifera compared to Ginkgo biloba and the ethylene production of Pinus trees to $SO_2$ were the highest in Pinus strobus followed by Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. In needle of Pinus strobus the ethylene production increased with the increasing rate of visible injury until the injury rate of 40-50% and than decreased with the increasing rate of visible injury since the rate of 50%.
