The document is a white paper on Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography (HILIC) analysis method development. HILIC is a type of chromatography that uses an organic/aqueous mobile phase and a polar stationary phase. In HILIC, water is a strong solvent, and unlike in Reversed Phase Liquid Chromatography (RPLC), increasing the proportion of water in the mobile phase reduces the retention time of the analyte. The paper discusses when to consider HILIC analysis methods, the advantages of HILIC, and the challenges often encountered due to the lack of understanding of HILIC mechanisms compared to RPLC. It also provides a systematic flowchart for intelligent solutions for HILIC analysis method development, which includes a three-step approach for chromatography analysis method development. The first step involves gathering as much information as possible about the analyte (e.g., pKa, log P, log D). The second step involves analyzing the sample under different pH conditions using three HILIC columns in either isocratic or gradient mode to identify the suitable column/pH combination for the analyte. The third step involves optimizing the separation by investigating other parameters such as temperature and ionic strength, and assessing the robustness of the method. The paper emphasizes that the selection of the appropriate stationary/mobile phase combination, based on the differences between the HILIC stationary phases and the mobile phase pH, can provide high selectivity in the analysis. This step-by-step approach can help users develop an efficient analysis method.
We tried to apply the linear solvation energy comparison method to solute retention in normal phase liquid chromatography. Correlation coefficients of regression of lnk' collected in a fixed eluent against solute polarity indices have proven to be lower than those obtained from reversed phase liquid chromatography data. This event can be attributed to complexity of solute retention process in normal phase liquid chromatography. We concluded from the regression results that each specific polarity of the stationary phase is greater than that of the mobile phase and that the difference in each polarity between the stationary phase and the mobile phase decreases as the volume fraction(${\phi}$) of the more polar solvent in the mobile phase increases. Correlations of lnk' of a single solute against solvent polarity indices have proven to be meaningless owing to covariance among the solvent polarity indices. Instead, a good linear relationship between lnk' and solvent ${\pi}^*$ was observed, and its linearity is better than that between lnk' and ${\phi}$.
The two-fluid equations are widely used to simulate two-phase flows in a nuclear reactor. For the two-fluid momentum equation, the wall and interfacial drag terms play an important role in predicting a two-phase flow behavior. Since the bubble density is much smaller than the water density, the bubble accelerates faster than the liquid in a nozzle. As a result, the bubble phase becomes faster than the liquid phase in the nozzle. In contrast, the opposite phenomena occur in the diffuser. The purpose of our study is to experimentally show these behaviors in an area-varying channel such as nozzle and diffuser. Experiments were made of turbulent bubbly flows in an area-varying horizontal channel. The velocities of the bubble and liquid phases were measured by the PIV technique. It was shown that the two-phase velocities were no longer close to each other in the area-varying regions. The bubble was faster than the liquid in the nozzle; in contrast, the bubble was slower than the liquid in the diffuser. Code simulations were also performed using the MARS code. By replacing the original wall drag model in the MARS code with Kim (1)'s wall drag partition model, we obtained the simulation results being consistent with experimental observations.

A multisample extraction device was newly designed for efficient extraction of dissolved lipophillic organic compounds from sea water sample. This device allowed extraction of organic compounds from up to 96 sample at a time using 96 multifolder on the principle of solid phase extraction with commercially available octadecyl silane (ODS) cartridges. The recovery yield of the new divice was higher than 90 % while that of conventional liquid-liquid extraction process are only 60 - 70 %. The amount of solvent required for the new device could be reduced to less than 20㎖ per 1ℓ of sample while 1 - 2 ℓ of solvent were used in the conventional liquid-liquid extraction process. The usefulness of this novel method was demonstrated with sea water samples collected from Yellow sea, and the qualitative and quantitative analyses results of the dissolved hydrocarbon showed this method was superior to that of conventional liquid-liquid extraction process in efficiency and reliability.
Submerged gas-injected system can be applied to various industrial field such as metallurgical and chemical processes, So this study aims at presenting the relevant relationship between gas phase and liquid phase in a gas-injected bath. In a cylinderical bath, local gas volume fraction and bubble frequency were measured by electroconductivity probe and oscilloscope. The temperature of each phase was measured using thermocouple and data acquisition system. In vertical gas injection system, gas-liquid two phase plume was formed, being symmetry to the axial direction of injection nozzle and in a shape of con. Lacal gas-liquid flow becomes irregular around the injection nozzle due to kinetic energy of gas and the flow variables show radical change at the vicinity of gas(air) injection nozzle As most of the kinetic energy of gas was transferred to liquid in this region, liquid started to circulate. In this reason, this region was defined as 'developing flow region' The Bubble was taking a form of churn flow at the vicinity of nozzle. Sometimes smaller bubbles formed by the collapse of bubbles were observed. The gas injected into liquid bath lost its kinetic energy and then was governed by the effect of buoyancy. In this region the bubbles which lost their kinetic energy move upward with relatively uniform velocity and separate. Near the gas nozzle, gas concentration was the highest. But it started to decrease as the axial distance increased, showing a Gaussian distribution.

In most direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchangers, oil or hydrocarbon with a density less than water is normally used as dispersed working fluid. The main difficulty that arises with this arrangement lies in the control of the interface at the top of the column. When it is connected with a solar collector which uses water as its working fluid, the main difficulties arise from the fact that the water can be frozen during winter time. In order to solve these problems and to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchanger, liquids heavier than water with low freezing temperature has been utilized as dispersed phase liquids in a small laboratory scale model made of pyrex glass. In the present investigation, dimethyl phthalate(C/sub 6/H/sub 4/)COOCH/sub 3/)/sub 2/) and diethyl phthalate (C/sub 6/H/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/) are utilized as heavy dispersed phase working fluids. The results of the present investigation the technical in the utilization of heavier dispersed working liquid in the spray-column liquid-liquid heat exchanger for a solar system. The overall average temperature difference along the column is found to be almost half of the initial temperature difference between the dispersed and the continuous phase. Despite the fact that the two phthalates tested in the experiment differ significantly in some of their physical properties, the volumetric heat transfer coefficients in terms of dispersed fluid superficial velocities were found to be similar for both phthalates tested.

Two-dimensional solidification analysis during rheology forming process of semi-solid aluminum ahoy has been studied Two-phase fluid flow model to investigate the velocity field and temperature distribution is proposed. The unposed mathematical model is applied to the die shape of the two type. To calculate the velocities and temperature fields during rheology forming process, the each governing equation correspondent to the liquid and solid region are adapted. Theoretical model on the basis of the two-phase flow model is the mixture rule of solid and liquid phases. This approach is based on the liquid and solid viscosity.
This paper introduces the partial melting process for solder application and characterization of its feasibility using Sn-Ag, and Sn-Cu solder alloys. ill order to show that the liquid phase in the semi-liquid state maintains the similar wettability as single-phase liquid, the wetting balance tests are conducted with varying temperatures and compositions. Also, as a new soldering technology, the microstructural and mechanical test were investigated. The results from this research indicate that the partial melting can yield satisfactory sider joints as long as the liquid phase acquires sufficient chemical activity. At a condition where the partial melting is effective, a direct correlation between the wettability and the surface tension is found to exist.
We have studied the phase transition to look for molecular structure by using several different techniques for new banana-shaped liquid crystals shown in Fig. 1. Based on the similarities to recently observed fluro-contaning materials (switching involves layer structure rearrangement, increasing threshold with increasing temperature) for HC sample (where x is H), we assume that the phase C has a triclinic symmetry corresponding to the double tilted $smC_G$ Phase. The observation that the polarization peak appears at lower field ($E_o{\sim}15V/{\mu}m$) than the amplitude of the threshold ($E_{th}$) can be explained assuming a field induced $SmC_G$ - SmCP (or SmAP) transition at $E_{th}$
Organic aerosols dispersed in the atmosphere likely undergo phase separation. Such internally mixed particles are often described as comprising an organic phase and an aqueous phase separately. We studied the morphology of two liquid separated aerosols in the sub-microscale by using a simple thermodynamic model with Russian doll geometry. The morphology of particles can be easily predicted from the simple criteria on the surface tension and two algebraic equations (the volume constraint and Young equation). This result may give the potential explanation about the complex morphology of the organic airborne particles.
