  • Salivary lipocalin (SAL1) is a member of the lipocalin protein family that has a property to associate with many lipophilic molecules and was identified as pheromone-binding protein in pigs. Our previous study has shown that SAL1 is expressed in the uterine endometrium in a cell type- and implantation stage-specific manner and secreted into the uterine lumen in pigs. However, function of SAL1 in the uterus during pregnancy in pigs is still not known. To understand physiological function of SAL1 in the uterine endometrium during pregnancy in pigs, it needs to elucidate the ligand(s) for SAL1. Thus, to identify the ligand for SAL1 in the porcine uterus, we collected uterine luminal fluid from pigs on day 12 of pregnancy by flushing with PBS. Proteins from the uterine luminal fluid were separated by ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Fractions containing SAL1 protein were pooled and concentrated. Immunoblot analysis confirmed successful purification of SAL1. Then, we extracted lipids from the purified SAL1 protein and analyzed the lipids by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and predicted to be steroid hormones and prostaglandins as SAL1 ligands. Results in this study showed that SAL1 protein in the uterine secretions has a small lipophilic molecule as a natural ligand. Further characterization of ligand extracted from purified SAL1 will be useful for understanding physiological function of SAL1 during pregnancy and its application to increase the pregnancy rate in pigs.

  • The beneficial effect of glycerol as a cryoprotectant, especially for sperm cryopreservation, has been shown in many studies. However, glycerol is toxic to living cells, and boar sperm in particular show greater sensitivity to glycerol than sperm from other domestic animals. Amides have been studied as alternative cryoprotectants for freezing stallion sperm. Sperm frozen in methylformamide or dimethylformamide as cryoprotectants show similar motility when thawed compared with sperm frozen in glycerol. We evaluated the cryoprotective effects of dimethylformamide on boar sperm freezing. To test the effect of amides, the concentration of boar semen was adjusted to $10^9sperm/mL$, and seminal plasma was removed using Hulsen solution. After centrifugation, the pellet was diluted in modified-Modena B extender. Lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extender was used as the cooling extender. The freezing extender was madeed aaddition of the optimal amount of glycerol and amides to LEY-Glycerol-Orvus ES Paste extender, and this extender was used for the second dilution. Diluted sperm were frozen in liquid nitrogen using the 0.5 mL straw method. Sperm frozen in extender with glycerol as a cderol were compared with those frozen in extender including the different amides. Sperm were tested for motility, viability, the sperm chromatin structure assay, and normal apical ridge after thawing. The percent of motile sperm diluted in glycerol was as high as that in the stallion study (61%). Dimethylformamide showed positive effects on sperm quality and was better than glycerol. Methylformamide provided similar sperm quality as glycerol. Therefore, dimethylformamide is useful for reducing cryoinjury in boar sperm and is expected to be useful as an alternative cryoprotectant.

  • Predicting heat transfer from the inner wall of the combustion chamber of the liquid rocket is a very difficult task. Several complex processes, such as convection, radiation and conduction must be taken into consideration. Usually commercial programs are used for the analysis of this processes. However, commercial programs are not a perfect solution, because of the long calculation times and a burdening data-input work. In this study, we developed and implemented one - dimensional thermal analysis. This technique can be easily used on the initial stage. The design of the combustion chamber's cooling channel of the steam generator designed using developed technique. In order to compare experimental and theoretical data, the combustion test was performed. Obtained experimental data for the coolant temperature differ from the theoretical prediction by only 8.5%.

  • Heat dissipation technology for semiconductors and electronic packaging has a substantial impact on performance and lifespan, but efficient heat dissipation is currently facing limited improvement. Owing to the high integration density in electronic packaging, heat dissipation components must become thinner and increase their performance. Therefore, heat dissipation materials are being devised considering conductive heat transfer, carbon-based directional thermal conductivity improvements, functional heat dissipation composite materials with added fillers, and liquid-metal thermal interface materials. Additionally, in heat dissipation structure design, 3D printing-based complex heat dissipation fins, packages that expand the heat dissipation area, chip embedded structures that minimize contact thermal resistance, differential scanning calorimetry structures, and through-silicon-via technologies and their replacement technologies are being actively developed. Regarding dry cooling using single-phase and phase-change heat transfer, technologies for improving the vapor chamber performance and structural diversification are being investigated along with the miniaturization of heat pipes and high-performance capillary wicks. Meanwhile, in wet cooling with high heat flux, technologies for designing and manufacturing miniaturized flow paths, heat dissipating materials within flow paths, increasing heat dissipation area, and reducing pressure drops are being developed. We also analyze the development of direct cooling and immersion cooling technologies, which are gradually expanding to achieve near-junction cooling.

  • In this study based on the mass transfer theory, experiments for the evaporation rates depending on various conditions were carried out through the operation of the existing Natural Evaporation Facility in KAERI. Evaporation media were made of the cotton and polyester. Air circulation in the facility was forced by exhausting fans. The evaporation rate and the decontamination factor were calculated by the result of experiment. The evaporation rate increased as the flow rate of air supply, the feed rate of liquid waste, and the temperature of supplied air increased. As for the humidity of supplied air, the evaporation rate was getting higher as the humidity was getting lower. As the result of this study, operation conditions of the Natural Evaporation Facility are optimized as follows : The air temperature above $8^{\circ}C$, the air humidity below 70%, the air flow rate 1.14-1.47 m/sec, and the liquid waste feed rate $4.6{\ell}/hr\cdotm^2$. The decontamination factor and the radioactivity are $5.1{\times}10^3$and $4.7{\times}10^{-13}{\mu}Ci/\textrm{m}{\ell}$ respectively, at the above mentioned optimum operation conditions. The air factor in the Dalton's equation for evaporation was determined from results of experiment on the temperature, the humidity, and the flow rate of supplied air as following : $[\textit{Eh}=(0.018 + 0.0141\textitv) {\delta}textitH]$

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the elution behavior of monosubstituted phenols and benzenes in micellar liquid chromatographic system, $C_{18}$ column-anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS). The partition coefficients between the micellar pseudophase-water and modified stationary phase-water are calculated by the relationship between solute retention and micellar mobile phase(SDS) composition. The free energy of transfer of solute from water to micelle is also calculated from these values. There is a direct correlation between the hydrophobicity parameters in MLC and corresponding partition data for 1-octanol-water, which indicates that the hydrophobicity of molecules plays an important role in the partition for both systems and that quantitative structure activity relationships(QSAR) are available from studies on micellar partition. The other purpose of this study is to investigate methylene selectivity of alkyl homologous series through correlation between retention and the number of carbons. The correlation between hydrophobicity parameters in MLC and 1-octanol-water partition data was also observed when n-propanol was as a modifier in the mobile phase.

  • Solid-liquid equilibria for mixtures composed of n-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and 2-pyrrolidone were measured as a basic study for the melt crystallization process to remove 2-pyrrolidone as impurity included in NVP. A differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a crystallizer were used and the experimental results obtained from two methods were similar. The mixture showed a eutectic system which has a single composition at the minimum melting temperature. Calculation results from simple thermodynamic equations were found in general agreements with present data. To determine the growth rate of NVP crystal which is important for the design of crystallization process, thicknesses of the crystal were measured with the time using a layer melt crystallizer. The growth rates increased as cooling temperatures decreased. Heat transfer coefficient correlated from present data was found to successfully describe the crystal growth behavior.

  • Recently, a problem related to the thermal management in portable electronic and telecommunication devices is becoming issued. That is due to the trend of slimness of the devices, so it is not easy to find the optimal thermal management technology for the devices. From now on, a pressed circular type cooling device has been mainly used, however the cooling device with thin thickness is becoming needed by the inner space constraint. In the present study, the silicon and metal flat plate type cooling device with the separated vapor and liquid flow path was designed and fabricated. Through the experimental study, the normal isothermal characteristic by vapor-liquid phase change was confirmed and the cooling device with 70mm of total length showed 6.8W of the heat transfer rate within the range of $4{\sim}5^{\circ}C$/W of thermal resistance. In the meantime, the metal cooling device was developed for commercialization. The device was designed to have all structures of evaporator, vapor flow path, liquid flow path and condenser in one plate. And an envelope of that could be completed by combining the two plates of same structure and size. And the simplicity of fabrication process and reduction of manufacturing cost could be accomplished by using the stamping technology for fabricating large flow paths relatively. In the future, it will be possible to develop the commercialized cooling device by revising the fabrication process and enhancing the thermal performance of that.

  • In order to develop a novel system named "thermal medium and gas circulation type pyrolysis system," this study was conducted to obtain basic data for process simulation before performing the pyrolysis experiment. Polypropylene (PP) was chosen as model material in the basic pyrolysis experiment instead of waste plastic and fluidized sand (hereinafter referred to as "sand"), and it was used as a heat transfer material in the "thermal medium and gas circulation type pyrolysis system." Ni was impregnated as an active catalyst on the sand to promote catalytic pyrolysis. The basic physical properties of PP were analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer, and pyrolysis was performed at 600 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere to produce liquid oil. The distribution of the carbon number of the liquid oil generated through the catalytic pyrolysis reaction was analyzed using GC/MS. We investigated the effects of varying the pyrolysis space velocity and catalyst amount on the yield of liquid oil and the carbon number distribution of the liquid oil. Using Ni/sand, the yield of liquid oil was increased except with the pyrolysis condition of 10 wt% Ni/sand at a space velocity of 30,000 h-1, and the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons increased. With increases in the space velocity, higher yields of liquid oil were obtained, but the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons was reduced. With 1 wt% Ni/sand, the oil yield obtained was greater than that obtained with 10 wt% Ni/sand. In summary, when 1 wt% Ni/sand was used at a space velocity of 10,000 h-1, the oil yield was 60.99 wt% and the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons was highest at 42.06 area%.

  • In cryogenic feeding system of turbo pump fed liquid-propulsion rocket, rise of cryogenic propellant temperature can bring into geysering in pipe or cavitation in turbo pump. In this paper, performance analysis of recirculation line which is one of the method to inhibit these phenomenon is carried out based on the configuration of KSLV-I 1st stage LOX feeding system, and parametric study to find design parameter. Diameter and re-entrance height, initial LOX temperature, ullage pressure, and natural convection heat transfer coefficient are varied to see the effects on performance. Additional He is injected into recirculation line to promote LOX recirculation. 1-dimensional analysis using network-solver, SINDA/FLUINT is carried out.
