Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants(R22, R32, R125, R134a, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures(R32/R134a and R290/R600a) are measured experimentally and compared with several correlations. Convective boiling term of Chen's correlation predicts experimental data for pure refrigerants fairly well(root-mean-square error of 12.1% for the quality range over 0.2). An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer of refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to study degradation of heat transfer. Annular flow is the subject of this analysis because a great portion of the evaporator in refrigeration or air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor phases, which is considered as a driving force for mass transfer at interface, is included in this analysis. Correction factor $C_F$ is introduced to the correlation for the pure substances through annular flow analysis to apply the correlation to the mixtures. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the correlation considering nucleate boilling effect in the low quality region and mass transfer effect for nonzazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.
Heat transfer coefficient were measured and new correlations were developed for two-phase heat transfer in a horizontal pipe for different patterns. Flow patterns were observed in a transparent circular pipe (2.54 cm I. D. and L/D=96) using an air/water mixture. Visual identification of the flow patterns was supplemented with photographic data and the results were plotted on the flow regime map proposed by Taitel and Dukler and agreed quite well with each other. A two-phase heat transfer experimental setup was built for this study and a total of 150 two-phase heat transfer data with different flow patterns were obtained under a uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. For these data, the superficial Reynolds number ranged from 640 to 35,500 for the liquid and from 540 to 21,200 for the gas. Our previously developed robust two-phase heat transfer correlation for a vertical pipe with modified constants predicted the horizontal pipe air-water heat transfer experimental data with good accuracy. Overall the proposed correlations predicted the data with a mean deviation of 1.0% and an rms deviation of 12%.

CFC-12, which has been used most widely in automobile air conditioners and household refrigerators is scheduled to be phased out soon because of its high ozone depletion potential. Now HFC-134a is suggested as an alternative refrigerant for CFC-12. In this Study, we intended to investigate how PAG oil influence evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil influences evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil in the horizontal miro-fin evaporation tube. Experiments were conducted under the flowing est conditions : mass velocity 86-250kg/$m^2$s, heat flux 5-30 ㎾/$m^2$, oil concentration 0-21 wt.% and saturation temperature 5$^{\circ}C$. Local evaporation heat transfer coefficients were found to be higher at the top, side and bottom of the tube in this order. Average heat transfer coefficients turned out to increase with oil concentration increment up to 3 wt.% oil concentration, whereas heat transfer coefficients gradually decreased over 3 wt.% oil concentration, because of oil-rich liquid film was formed on the heat transfer surface. Flow patterns were rapidly transitioned to annular regimes up to 3 wt.% oil concentration. In case of pure refrigerant, measured heat transfer coefficients in the experiments were similar to those of Kandlikar's correlation.
This research focused on the multi-pass heat exchanger using the minichannel possessing the spring fin. An air-water was used as working fluid. The characteristics of liquid single phase heat transfer were verified. The compact heat exchanger (heat transfer area density : ${\beta}=2,146 m^2/m^3$), based on the shape of header(Top combining header), 63 minichannels ($D_i$ : 1.4 mm, L : 0.25 m) and the air side adopting the copper wire spring fin, was fabricated. The heat transfer area density of the air side was improved up to 161% when compared with the conventional fin-tube heat exchanger that adopts the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm. With regard to heat transfer performance, heat transfer rate per unit volume increased up to 142% when compared with the fin-tube heat exchanger adopting the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices. The test facility consists of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings(vortex generators) protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the two longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators are varied from 20 degree to 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators are fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity downstream of the vortex generators is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurs in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the cases(${\beta}=20^{circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$).

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from - 20 degree to - 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. Unlike common flow down, common flow up vortices moved toward the centerline as they developed and interacted strongly with each other but not with the boundary layer. Spanwise profiles of Stanton number were similar for ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$, but not similar for ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$. The case of ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$ showed the two peak Stanton number, but the case of ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$ showed the only one peak Stanton number.

In this study, the conventional plane tip, double squealer tip, and various groove tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shapes on tip surface heat transfer coefficient distributions. Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured using a hue-detection based transient liquid crystals technique. Two tip gap clearances of 1.5% and 2.3% of blade span were investigated and the Reynolds number based on cascade exit velocity and chord length was $2.48{\times}10^5$. Results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip surface with various grooved tips were lower than those with plane tip blade. The overall heat transfer coefficient on grooved along suction side tip was lower than that on the squealer tip.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of the free stream turbulence intensity and Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow characteristics In the linear turbine cascade. Profiles of the time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress were measured in the turbine cascade passage. The static pressure and heat transfer distributions on the blade suction and pressure surfaces were also measured. The experiments were made for the Reynolds number based on the chord length, Rec = $2.2{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and the free stream turbulence intensity, $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% to 9.1 %. The uniform heat flux boundary condition on the blade surface was created using the gold film Intrex and the surface temperature was measured by liquid crystal, while hot wire probes were used for the flow measurements. The results show that the free stream turbulence promotes the boundary layer development and delays the flow separation point on the suction surface. It was found that the boundary layer flows on the suction surface for all Reynolds numbers tested with $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% are laminar. It was also found that the heat transfer coefficient on the blade surface increases as the free stream turbulence intensity increases and the flow separation point moves downstream with an increasing Reynolds number. The results of skin friction coefficients are in good agreement with the heat transfer results in that for $FSTI_1{\geq}2.6%$, the turbulent boundary layer separation occurs.

We propose a method for evaluating the image quality of color liquid crystal display(LCD) monitors by using the polychromatic modulation transfer function(PMTF), which is calculated from the modulation transfer function(MTF) weighted by the overall color response of the system including the test LCD monitor. We confirm that experimental results using the PMTF agree well with simulated results of the PMTF of a color LCD monitor by using three bar targets with different amplitudes and three elementary colors such as red(R), green(G), and blue(B). As a results, we should choose the PMTF instead of the white color MTF or monochromatic MTF in order to evaluate correctly the image quality of color LCD monitors.
