  • The activated paper mill sludge was treated with WF and some additives (sodium sulfide, nickel nitrate, ethyl acetate) for methane fermentation at $35^{\circ}C$. Optmum C/N ratio was 60 out of three conditions (20, 30 and 60). The Period of 40% of methane content possibly ignition, was 2 days shorter than with non-treatment during 10 days. Nevertheless, the total amount of methane production showed the 1/8 level of control far the same period. The yield and content of methane were increased by the addition of sodium Sulfur and ethyl acetate. Sulfur was an essential factor in methane fermentation of paper mill sludge.

  • This research was conducted to determine the effect of mixing ratio of aquafarm waste water sludge (AWWS) in the growing medium as a source of fertilizers on growth of plug seedlings of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). Increased mixing ratio of AWWS resulted in increased fresh and dry weights, leaf area, plant height, and total chlorophyll content, although there were slight differences in growth characteristics at 20 and 40 days after sowing. Concentration of AWWS affected insignificantly the percent dry matter, number of leaves, and length of the longest root. The addition of AWWS increased pH and decreased EC in the medium as compared to that of chemical fertilizer. Compared to the control of a liquid fertilizer, 4 or 8 kg AWWS${\cdot}45L^{-1}$ medium (Sludge 4) gave a similar or slightly better growth. Above results suggested that addition of about 4 kg AWWS${\cdot}45L^{-1}$medium is sufficient for seedling growth and the AWWS can be used as a substitute for the liquid fertilizer in plug seedling production.

  • The novel microbial process such as Anammox(anaerobic ammonium oxidation) and Canon(completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite) processes is promising biotechnology to remove nitrogen from ammonium-rich wastewater like anaerobic sludge digester liquid. In this research, a new Canon-type nitrogen removal process adopting upflow granular sludge bed type configuration was investigated on its feasibility and process performance, using synthetic wastewater and sludge digester liquids. Air as an oxygen source was provided in an external aeration chamber with flow recirculation. In the first experiment using the synthetic wastewater(up to 110 mg $NH_4$-N $L^{-1}$), the ammonium removal was about 95%(92% for T-N) at effective hydraulic retention time(HRT) for 3.8 days. In the second experiment using the sludge digester liquids($438{\pm}26$ mg $NH_4$-N $L^{-1}$), the total nitrogen removal was $94{\pm}1.7%$ at HRT for 5.4 days and $76{\pm}1.5%$ at HRT for 3.8 days, respectively. Little nitrite and nitrate were observed in the effluent of both experiments. The process revealed quite a lower oxygen($0.29{\sim}0.59$ g $O_2$ $g^{-1}N$) and less alkalinity($3.1{\sim}3.4$ g $CaCO_3$ $g^{-1}N$) consumption as compared to other new technology in microbial nitrogen removal. The process also offers the economical compact reactor configuration with excellent biomass retention, resulting in lower cost for investment and maintenance.

  • In this study, it was to develop a chemical method that can recycle the cutting oil which accounts for about 25% of the cost of the process among containing materials of silicon waste sludge generated in the process for producing a solar cell wafer. The 7 types of reagents have been used, including acetone, HCl, NaOH, KOH, $Na_2CO_3$, HF, $CH_2Cl_2$, etc. for this experiment. And It was carried out at a speed of 3000 rpm for 60 minutes centrifugation after performing a reaction with a waste sludge at various concentrations. As a result, the best reagents and conditions for separating the solid such as a silicon powder and a metal powder and liquid cutting oil were identified as 0.3 N NaOH. It is found to be pH 6.05 in a post-processing recycled cutting oil with 0.3 N NaOH after reaction of waste sludge and 0.1 N HCl which is effective to remove metal powder in order to adjust the pH to suit the properties of the weak acid is a commercially available cutting oil and it showed excellent turbidity than when applied to sludge with 0.3 N NaOH alone. The results of FT-IR analysis which can compare the properties of the commercially available cutting oil shows it has a possibility of recycling oil. The cutting oil recovery rate obtained through the experiment was found to be 86.9%.

  • Sequencing batch operation consists of fill, react, settle and decant phases in the same reactor. Operation consists of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic (aerobic) phases when nutrient removal from the wastewater is desired. Since the same reactor is used for biological oxidation (or mixing) and sedimentation in aerobic and anaerobic SBR operations, capital and operating costs are lower than conventional activated sludge process and conventional anaerobic digestion process, respectively. Therefore, Aerobic SBR and Anaerobic SBR operations may be more advantageous far treatment of small volume animal wastewater in rural areas.

  • The effects of membrane fouling on the water permeability were examined using the hollow fiber microfiltration (HMF)membrane. A membrane module with a pore size of 0.1 micron was submerged in the permeation tank and water bath. The applied pressure was 12.4 kPa for direct solid-liquid separation of activated sludge. As the concentration of MLSS(880~2180mg/l) of the feed solution increased, the decreasing rates of the water flux increased and the membrane was clogged more rapidly. The water flux through the membrane did not increase effectively even with the increase in the applied pressure(40.0~93.3kPa). When the membrane was cleaned with water, the recovery rate of water flux were larger for lower applied pressure. The results indicated that the process of direct solid-liquid separation using HMF membrane was effective at lower pressure.

  • This study aims to study the effect of HRT and influent concentration on swine wastewater treatment using UASB(Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket). Sample was separately collected from the piggery farm; urine(liquid part) and solid part to compare their treatment characteristics. Reactors were used two UASB(3.2 L) in this research under constant temperature ($35^{\circ}C$). Their operating conditions were as follows; Run 1(UASB ; HRT 6-days, 1 cycle/d), Run 2(UASB ; HRT 3-days, 1 cycle/d). Biogas was collected and analyzed using GC(HP-6890). By comparing the results of Run 1 and Run 2, the effect of HRT was investigated. The treatment efficiency of Run 1 which had longer HRT was higher than that of Run 2 in both solid and liquid parts of piggery sample. Methane content in collected biogas is more than 80%.

  • As the measures of nuclear power plant utilities and manufacturers to reduce the defects of tube expansion region during manufacturing steam generators, many types of NDEs(Non-Destructive Examinations) are conducted to inspect the expansion region. The expansion region of tube is subject to degrade because of stress concentration induced by tube expansion, sludge pile and high temperature. So the inspections for tube expansion region have been reinforced. Liquid penetrant test, helium leak test, Bobbin profile test and hydraulic test are performed to confirm the integrity of tube expanded by hydraulic expansion method. Liquid penetrant test and helium leak test are used to inspect seal weld region on tubesheet end part. Bobbin Profile test is used to inspect fully the expanded region of steam generator tube. Hydraulic test finally verifies the integrity of seal weld region on tubesheet end part.

  • This study was conducted to find the capability of comparison of overall oxygen transfer coefficient in the membrane coupled high performance reactor (MPHCR) in treating high organic loading wastewater. Effluent quality had been analyzed while the influent organic loading rate was changed from 2 to $7kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}day$. The oxygen transfer coefficients had been investigated using two-phase nozzle for operating variables which were internal circulation flowrate (5~8 L/min), air flow rate (0.0125~0.2 L/min), liquid temperature ($10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$), and pure-oxygen flow rate (0.0125~0.2 L/min). The overall oxygen transfer coefficient was increased with flowrate of internal circulation and air and high temperature. Especially, internal circulation flow rate showed distinct effect on overall oxygen transfer coefficient due to an increase of gas holdup and air-liquid contract area by two-phase nozzle. In the high range of organic loading rate from 4 to $7kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}day$, the removable efficiency of COD was 91%. Conventional activated sludge process usually treat organic loading from 0.32 to $0.64kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}day$ however, the MPHCR can treat 10 to 20 times higher if it would be compared to the conventional activated sludge process. Foaming problem often happened and caused biomass wash out of the reactor, therefore, the foaming should be controlled for the enhanced operation.

  • This work was performed to find the effect of operation parameters on the permeate flux through the activated sludge dynamic layer, and to indicate the relationship between the water quality of supernatant and flux based on the results. Since the effluent can be obtained through steady and stable formation of cake layer in the bio-filter media system, it is an important subject to keep and control microbes with activated state in the bio-reactor. Filtration resistance was drastically increased at more than 18000mg/L of MLSS. With filtration time continued, the flux was gradually decreased and the water qualities of supernatant monitored by turbidity and TOC were also deteriorated. This phenomenon indicated that the organic materials generated by microbes and accumulated in the reactor might affect the flux in the system. In addition, the decrease of flux was simultaneously observed in the sludge volume index. When SVI was controlled from 150 to 250, the flux was also decreased. The proper aeration time was recommended to 30 to 60 seconds in this system. In order to operate this system steadily, therefore, the control of water quality of supernatant and SVI should be proceeded.
