Due to the demand of the cold neutron flux in the neutron science and beam utilization technology, the cold neutron source (CNS) has been constructed and operating in the nuclear research reactor all over the world. The majority of the heat load removal scheme in the CNS is two-phase thermosiphon using the liquid hydrogen as a moderator. The CNS moderates thermal neutrons through a cryogenic moderator, liquid hydrogen, into cold neutrons with the generation of the nuclear heat load. The liquid hydrogen in a moderator cell is evaporated for the removal of the generated heat load from the neutron moderation and flows upward into a heat exchanger, where the hydrogen gas is liquefied by the cryogenic helium gas supplied from a helium refrigeration system. The liquefied hydrogen flows down to the moderator cell. To keep the required liquid hydrogen stable in the moderator cell, the CNS consists of an in-pool assembly (IPA) connected with the hydrogen system to handle the required hydrogen gas, the vacuum system to create the thermal insulation, and the helium refrigeration system to provide the cooling capacity. If one of systems is running out of order, the operating research reactor shall be tripped because the integrity of the CNS-IPA is not secured under the full power operation of the reactor. To prevent unscheduled reactor shutdown during a long time because the research reactor has been operating with the multi-purposes, the introduction of the standby cooling system (STS) can be a solution. In this presentation, the design considerations are considered how to design the STS satisfied with the following objectives: (a) to keep the moderator cell less than 350 K during the full power operation of the reactor under loss of the vacuum, loss of the cooling power, loss of common electrical power, or loss of instrument air cases; (b) to circulate smoothly helium gas in the STS circulation loop; (c) to re-start-up the reactor within 1 hour after its trip to avoid the Xenon build-up because more than certain concentration of Xenon makes that the reactor cannot start-up again; (d) to minimize the possibility of the hydrogen-oxygen reaction in the hydrogen boundary.
Vapor-liquid equilibrium data were obtained for system of propane + R227ea (Heptafluoropropane) over the temperature range from 253.15 K to 323.15 K at 10 K intervals. Experiments were performed in a circulation type apparatus by injecting vapor through liquid pool using a magnetic pump. This system forms azeotrope in the temperature range of this study. The experimental results were correlated with the Peng-Robinson (PR) equation of state and Redlich-Kwong-Soave (RKS) equation of state using the van der Walls one-fluid mixing rule and were compared with each other.

Isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE) data have been obtained for the systems of propane(R290)+1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane(R134a) and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane(R134a)+isobutane(R60A) in the temperature range of 253.15 to 323.15K. Experiments were performed in a circulation type apparatus by injecting vapor through liquid pool using a magnetic pump. Both systems form azeotropes in the temperature range of this study. The experimental results were estimated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state. When the temperature-dependent binary interaction parameter was used in the Peng-Robinson equation of state, the absolute average deviation of the measured bubble point pressures from the values correlated by the Peng-Robinson equation was 0.65% and 0.78% for R290+R134a and R134a+600a, respectively. Azeotropic compositions for both systems were presented.

A numerical analysis was performed on the effect of the design parameters of a bubble jet type microactuator on its liquid flow characteristics. The numerical models included the ink flow from the reservoir, bubble formation and growth, ejection through the nozzle, and dynamics of the refilling process. Because the bubble behavior is a very important parameter for the overall actuator performance, the bubble growth and collapse phenomena in an open pool were simulated in the present study. The drop ejection and refill process were numerically predicted for various geometries of the nozzle, chamber, and restrictor of the bubble jet microactuator. The numerical results from varying the design parameters can help with predicting the performance and optimizing the design of a microactuator.
The SSC-K system analysis code is under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) as a part of the KALIMER project. The SSC-K code is being used as the principal tool for analyzing a variety of off-normal conditions or accidents of the preliminary KALIMER design. The SSC-K code features a multiple-channel core representation coupled with a point kinetics model with reactivity feedback. It provides a detailed, one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic simulation of the primary and secondary sodium coolant circuits, as well as the balance-of-plant steam/water circuit. Recently a two-dimensional hot pool model was incorporated into SSC-K for analysis of thermal stratification phenomena in the hot pool. In addition, SSC-K contains detailed models for the passive decay heat removal system and a generalized plant control system. The SSC-K code has also been applied to the computational engine for an interactive simulation of the KALIMER plant. This paper presents an overview of the recent activities concerned with SSC-K code model development This paper focuses on both descriptions of the newly adopted thermal hydraulic and neutronic models, and applications to KALIMER analyses for typical anticipated transients without scram.
It is important to accurately predict the temperature and density distributions in large stratified enclosures both for design optimization and accident analysis. Current reactor system analysis codes only provide lumped-volume based models that can give very approximate results. Previous scaling analysis has shown that stratified mixing processes in large stably stratified enclosures can be described using one-dimensional differential equations, with the vertical transport by jets modeled using integral techniques. This allows very large reductions in computational effort compared to three-dimensional CFD simulation. The BMIX++ (Berkeley mechanistic MIXing code in C++) code was developed to implement such ideas. This paper summarizes major models for the BMIX++ code, presents the two-plume mixing experiment simulation as one validation example, and describes the codes' application to the liquid salt buffer pool system in the AHTR (Advanced High Temperature Reactor) design. Three design options have been simulated and they exhibit significantly different stratification patterns. One of design options shows the mildest thermal stratification and is identified as the best design option. This application shows that the BMIX++ code has capability to provide the reactor designers with insights to understand complex mixing behavior with mechanistic methods. Similar analysis is possible for liquid-metal cooled reactors.
Growth characteristics of methane-propane clathrate hydrate, growing under different undercooling conditions, was investigated. After the water within pressurized vessel was fully saturated with guest gas molecules by agitation, medium was rapidly undercooled and maintained at the constant temperature. The growth of hydrate was always Initiated with film formations at the upper bounding surface of liquid pool. The visual observation using microscope revealed detailed features of subsequent crystal nucleation, migration, growth and interference occurring within liquid pool. A number of small crystals ascended and settled at the hydrate film. When undercooling was small $({\Delta}T=3.2K)$, some of the settled crystals slowly grew into faceted columns. As the undercooling increased, the downward growth of crystals underneath the hydrate film became dendritic and occurred with greater rate and with finer arm spacing. The shapes of the floating crystals were diverse and included octahedron and triangular or hexagonal platelet When the undercooling was small, the octahedral crystals were found dominant. As the undercooling increased, the shape of the floating crystals also became dendritic. The detailed characteristics of floating crystals were reported in this study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of novel process with thermal hydrolysis and separation as pre-treatment of anaerobic digestion (AD). The dewatered sludge was pre-treated using THP, and then separated. The separated liquid used as substrate for AD and separated solid was returned on THP(Thermal Hydrolysis Process). The degree of disintegration (DD, based on COD) using only THP found 45.1-49.3%. The DD using THP+separation found 76.1-77.6%, which was higher than only THP. As result from dual-pool two-step model, the ratio of rapidly degradable substrate to total degradable substrate found 0.891-0.911 in separated liquid, which was higher than only THP. However, the rapidly degradable substrate reaction constant (kF) of only THP and THP+separation were similar. This results found that dewatered sludge was disintegrated by THP, and then rapidly degradable substrate of hydrolyzed sludge was sorted by separation.

Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).
