In liquid hydrogen storage tanks, tank damage or leakage in the surrounding pipes possess a major risk. Since these tanks store huge amounts of the fluid among all the liquid hydrogen process facilities, there is a high risk of leakage-related accidents. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a risk assessment of liquid hydrogen leakage for a grid-type liquid hydrogen storage tank (lattice-type pressure vessel (LPV): 18 m3) that overcame the low space efficiency of the existing pressure vessel shape. Through a commercially developed three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics program, the geometry of the site, where the liquid hydrogen storage tank will be installed, was obtained and simulations of the leakage scenarios for each situation were performed. From the computational flow analysis results, the pool formation behavior in the event of liquid hydrogen leakage was identified, and the resulting damage range was predicted.
Cryogenic vessels are special equipment that requires periodic evaluation of their thermal insulation performance. At the current standard, the test is considered as the loss product or heat leakage of cryogenic vessel, which takes over 72 h to evaluate; consequently, a large amount of working medium is discharged to the environment in the process. However, hydrogen is flammable and explosive, and the discharged gas may be dangerous. If liquid hydrogen is replaced with liquid nitrogen before testing, the operation then becomes complicated, and the loss product or heat leakage cannot respond to the thermal insulation performance of cryogenic vessels for liquid hydrogen. Therefore, a novel method is proposed to evaluate the heat leakage of cryogenic vessels for liquid hydrogen in self-pressurization. In contrast to the current testing methods, the method proposed in this study does not require discharge or exchange of working medium in all test processes. The proposed method is based on one-dimensional heat transfer analysis of cryogenic vessels, which is verified by experiment. When this method is used to predict the heat leakage, the comparison with the experimental data of the standard method shows that the maximum error of heat leakage is less than 5.0%.
A reinforced concrete water tank is a typical functional liquid storage structure and cracks are the greatest threat to the liquid storage structure. Tanks are readily cracked due to seismic activity, thereby leading to the leakage of the stored liquid and a loss of function. In order to study the effect of cracks on liquid storage tanks, self-healing and leakage tests for bending cracks and through cracks in the walls of a reinforced concrete water tank were conducted. Material performance tests were also performed. The self-healing performance of bending cracks in a lentic environment and through cracks in a lotic environment were tested, thereby the self-healing width of bending micro-cracks in the lentic environment in the short term were determined. The through cracks had the capacity for self-healing in the lotic environment was found. The leakage characteristics of the bending cracks and through cracks were tested with the actual water head on the crack. The effects on liquid leakage of the width of bending cracks, the depth of the compression zone, and the acting head were determined. The relationships between the leakage rate and time with the height of the water head were analyzed. Based on the tests, the relationships between the crack characteristics and self-healing as well as the leakage were obtained. Thereby the references for water tank structure design and grading earthquake damage were provided.

Nonflammable mixtures of flammable and nonflammable refrigerants are possible as substitute refrigerants for use in domestic heat pumps and refrigerators. Refrigerant leakage from such a system is of paramount concern since it is possible that the resulting mixture composition remaining in system will reside in the flammable range. This paper presents a simulation of a leakage process of refrigerant mixtures. Idealized cases of isothermal leakage process are considered in this study representing a slow leak. Simulation is performed for selected composition of binary and ternary refrigerant mixture; R-32/134a and R-32/125/134a. Mixture compositions with respect to percentage leak of original charge are presented. In isothermal leakage process, both vapor and liquid compositions of more volatile refrigerant decrease during vapor and liquid leak, but the total composition of this component decreases during vapor leak and increases during liquid leak. Vapor and liquid compositions are determined depending on the vapor-liquid equilibrium relation of the refrigerant mixture. The refrigerant mixture left in the system can go to a nonflammable direction relying on which component in the mixture is flammable.
The Chemical Controls Act strictly regulates for the chemical companies to establish sufficient space between the liquid chemical tank and dike, but facilities already installed suffer from the space shortage between the tank and dike. Installing leakage preventing plates on the dike is considered as one of the economic solutions that can alleviate the space deficiency. However, there is no technical and reasonable criterion for the safety evaluation of the leakage preventing plate on the dike. In order to address this problem, we provide generalized and verified calculating equations that give maximum height and horizontal distance of leakage trajectories. Through the proposed equations, proper heights of the leakage preventing plates on the dike can be easily determined. In this study, new calculating methods are also developed to determine the impact force of the liquid to the leakage preventing plates. In addition, we performed the reactivity experiments between four corrosive liquid chemicals and two stainless steel materials that are candidate substances for the construction of the leakage preventing plate. The results of this study is expected to be applicable as a guideline in the design of safe dike and its leakage preventing plates.
The use of clean gaseous fuels for the purpose of high efficiency and low emission in automotive engines has tendency to increase in order to meet the reinforcing emission regulations and to efficiently utilize limited natural resources. Automotive companies developed and commercialized a LPG liquid injection system, which is mounted on LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) engines and vehicles based on this research trend. This research examines the biggest problem in LPLi engine, that is, the leakage characteristics of low viscosity LPG fuel according to the injector design variables. This study is also aimed to improve the performance of fuel-leakage in LPLi engine through the addition of a lubrication improver in HFRR(High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) facility. The needle displacement and the spring displacement of an LPLi injector are found to be already optimized. The possibility of a maximum of 70% leakage reduction compared to a conventional case, is verified when 1000ppm of a lubrication improvement material is added and 40% increase of a injector spring constant (K) is applied.

In this study, correlation equations were arranged about mass flow rates of oxygen and volume flow rates of helium using a mouthpiece method. The mouthpiece method can reduce examination cost by using similar empirical formula. Instead of liquid oxygen, in the mouthpiece method, gas helium can be measured in order to determine the leakage amount of liquid oxygen conveniently. Experiment was conducted and compared to understand leakage amount relation between the helium and the oxygen for prototype item under a room and a cryogenic temperature conditions. The leakage volume flow rate [$A.m{\ell}/s$] of the helium was 174 times higher than mass flow rate [g/s] of the oxygen leakage at liquid state. The derived correlation equations were verified using data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by in-plane or fringe field were known to exhibit wide viewing angle and appeared to be black in the off state. However, the existence of spacers inside the cell causes the deformation of the liquid crystal molecules. Such a deformation of the liquid crystal causes light-leakage in the dark state, which lowers contrast ratio of the display. We found that the light-leakage due to deformation of the LC director near the spacer mainly depends on the dielectric anisotropy and the ratio of elastic constants of the LC. In this paper, the mechanism on deformation of the LC near spacer is investigated by optical polarizing microscopy.

The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLi) system (the third generation technology) has been considered as one of the next generation fuel supply systems for LPG vehicles, since it has a very strong potential to accomplish the higher power, higher efficiency, and lower emission characteristics than the mixer type(the second generation technology) fuel supply system. To investigate the durability property of core part of injector in liquid phase LPG injection system, leakage test, SEM test of injectors and analysis of unvaporized fuel components with various LPG fuel qualities were tested. The experimental results showed that no serious problem in durability test using favorable LPG fuel quality, while high leakage amount due to the large scratches in the needle and nozzle of the injector were found using LPG fuel with highly containing olefin components, especially butadiene species.
Until recently, ships, automobiles, and drones using hydrogen energy are being actively researched. In addition, stations and facilities for hydrogen supply are being developed widely. Among them, a hydrogen pump is necessary for compressing it and transfer to other stations. The liquid hydrogen pump is operated at very high pressure up to 90 MPa. In our research, a reciprocating plunger pump is studied. Especially, a leakage in a liquid hydrogen pump is predicted using a finite element method. As a result, it was found that leak mass flow rates changed from 0.09 to 2.20 kg/h, when the gaps were given from 2 to 6 ㎛. Thus pump efficiencies were calculated from 99.9 to 97.9%, when the gaps changed from 2 to 6 ㎛. These results are useful for the design of the liquid hydrogen pump.
