Robinson with ${coworkers}^{1}$ have introduced two-state outer-neighbor bonding model to explain the anomalies of water. The studies on the properties of water as a function of temperature and pressure revealed that, unlike other ideas, all $H_2O$ molecules in liquid are tetrabonded. On the average they are forming two different bonding types. One type is the regular tetrahedral water-water bonding similar to that found in the ordinary ice Ih, whereas the other is a more dense nonregular tetrahedral bonding similar to that appearing in the ice II. The transformation between these two bonding forms is evidenced by FT-NIR experiment. The FT-NIR measurements were done for liquid water in the temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ up to $80^{\circ}C$ in a wide extent of frequencies: 12 000 - 4000 $cm^{-1}$ /. Temperature dependent variations in the volume fraction of these two structures are directly related to the spectral changes. The absorbance variations are explored by means of the two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), principal component analysis (PCA), curve fitting and second derivatives. The presence of the isosbestic points in a range of the combination and overtone transitions indicates that the experimental spectra are a superposition of two temperature independent components. One component of diminishing intensity with temperature increase, is assigned to a stronger hydrogen bonds occurred in the Ih type, whereas the second component showing an opposite behavior, one can attribute to a weaker H-bonds characteristic for the II type. The understanding of the hydrogen bonding network in the liquid water is very important in interpretation of the interaction between water and protein chain. The two-state model of water surrounding the protein surface could advance an understanding of the hydration process.

An overview is given on the work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Energy Systems at ETH, Zurich (ETHZ) and of the Laboratory of Thermal Hydraulics at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland on tight-lattice bundles. Two-phase flow in subchannels of a tight triangular lattice was studied experimentally and by computational fluid dynamics simulations. Two adiabatic facilities were used: (1) a vertical channel modeling a pair of neighboring sub-channels; and (2) an arrangement of four subchannels with one subchannel in the center. The first geometry was equipped with two electrical film sensors placed on opposing rod surfaces forming the subchannel gap. They recorded 2D liquid film thickness distributions on a domain of $16{\times}64$ measuring points each, with a time resolution of 10 kHz. In the bubbly and slug flow regime, information on the bubble size, shape, and velocity and the residual liquid film thickness underneath the bubbles were obtained. The second channel was investigated using cold neutron tomography, which allowed the measurement of average liquid film profiles showing the effect of spacer grids with vanes. The results were reproduced by large eddy simulation + volume of fluid. In the outlook, a novel nonadiabatic subchannel experiment is introduced that can be driven to steady-state dryout. A refrigerant is heated by a heavy water circuit, which allows the application of cold neutron tomography.
The aim of this study is to develop a sunscreen stick formulation technology with excellent water resistance and washability. Consumers' needs for sunscreen products are diversifying. Water resistance and ease of washing are both important factors in sunscreen products. However, it is difficult to develop a sunscreen formulation that satisfies these two factors at the same time, because these two elements are in conflict. Fatty acid has a hydrophobic property against the water with low or neutral pH, but when it contacts with soapy water which has high pH, saponification occurs and the fatty acids become surfactants and can be dispersed in the water. Using the reaction characteristics of fatty acids, we can make sunscreen that is highly resistant to water or sweat, but is only selectively removed from soapy water. We found that the sunscreen stick containing fatty acids had better water resistance and washability than the sunscreen sticks without fatty acid. The sunscreen stick containing fatty acids showed a tendency to improve water resistance by scattering ultraviolet rays of long wavelength area by forming insoluble precipitation with divalent ions in tap water after immersion. In addition, an increase in the fatty acid content tended to also increase the ease of cleaning the sunscreen stick. Solid fatty acid was advantageous in improving water resistance than liquid fatty acid, but there was no difference between solid fatty acids and liquid fatty acid in washability. When it comes to stability, the sunscreen stick using liquid fatty acids maintained a high hardness and melting point, and showed no sweating. Based on this study, it is possible to develop an easy washable sunscreen stick formulation technology that has excellent water resistance but is selectively removed only in soapy water.
Starting with cathode ray tubes, displays are forming markets in the order of active marix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) after PDP (Plasma Display Panel) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). OLED is recognized as a key field for the development of each country preparing for the fourth industrial revolution, and especially Samsung Display and LG Display, which are the top industries in Korea, are leading the market with more than 90% of OLED shares. Currently, AMOLED has moved to the area that can be folded or bent. This technology is possible because TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and OLED may be formed on a flexible substrate. In the future, the technology will move to stretchable displays, and for this, the development of substrate materials is first, and then TFT and OLED devices should also be implemented with stretchable materials.

A hybrid thin film was prepared by doping reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into a sol-gel solution mixed with aluminum, titanium, and strontium using a brush coating method. The annealing temperature was carried out at 160, 260, and 360℃, and the difference in oxidation reaction was observed. The sol-gel solution created during the membrane manufacturing process generates a contractile force due to the shear stress of the brush bristles, forming a microgroove structure. This structure was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy analysis, and the presence of rGO was clearly revealed. As the annealing temperature increases, the oxidation and reduction reactions on the thin film surface become more active, so the intensity of the surface mixture increases. Moreover, the electro-optical properties were stabilized and improved by increasing the intensity of the mixtures. Likewise, the voltage-capacitance values are also significantly improved. Lastly, the transmittance measurement showed that it was suitable for liquid crystal display application.
Callus induction from leaf and stem explants of Arabidopsis thaliana was successfully obtained when leaf explants were cultured on MS medium containing 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D in the dark and also, when stem explants were cultured on CP medium containing 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1 mg/L BAP. Explant-derived sliced calli were suspension-subcultured every week in CP liquid medium with 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1 mg/L BAP in the dark, and shoot-forming cell clusters of nodular, pale yellow and knobby type were selected after 7-8 weeks of culture. Shoots were initiated from the green spots of the selected shoot forming calli cultured on MS regeneration medium containing 0.05 mg/L IAA, 7.0 mg/L 2-iP and 30 g/L sucrose under continous illumination for four weeks. Shoot regeneration frequency (calli regenerating at least one shoot) was more than 50%. For plant regeneration, excised shoots were trnasferred to hormone free medium for root initiation after 4 weeks of culture. The regenerants were bolting after 2 weeks of culture and formed in vitro flowering buds within bracts after 4 weeks of culture.

Deformation behavior of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_5$ (at. %) bulk metallic glass (BMG) fabricated by suction casting method has been investigated at elevated temperatures in this study. The BMG was first verified to have an amorphous structure thru X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A series of compression tests has consequently been performed in supercooled liquid temperature region to investigate the high temperature deformation behavior. A transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow appeared to take place depending upon both the strain rate and test temperature. A processing map based on a dynamic materials model has been constructed to estimate a feasible forming condition for this BMG alloy.
Developmental morphology of the red alga, Osmundea crispa (Hollenberg) Nam from California was studied on the basis of liquid-preserved and herbarium specimens. Vegetative axial segment of the species produces two pericentral cells and one trichoblast. Spermatangial filaments (branches) are derived from apical and epidermal cells in pocket-shaped apical pit with an ostiole-like upper opening. Procarp-bearing segment of female trichoblast produces five pericentral cells, of which the fifth functions as supporting cell of carpogonial branch. Tetrasporangial production occurs in random epidermal cells in apical pit of branchlets, and two presporangial cover cells show parallel arrangement to stichidial axis. As this vegetative and reproductive development is included in the generic delineation of Osmundea Stackhouse, O. crispa among the known Osmundea species is characterized by habit forming compact cushion-like clump with angular to terete thallus. It is also distinguished from O. hybrida (AP. de Candolle) Nam without the compressed thallus by the number of pericentral cells in procarp-bearing segment and shape of spermatangial pit. Taxonomic implication of the shape of spermatangial pit is also included.
Various solid structures were prepared by electrospray technique. In this process, liquid flows out from a capillary nozzle under a high electrical potential and is subjected to an electric field, which causes elongation of the meniscus to form a jet. In our study, by controlling the amount of polyvinyl pyrrolydone in precursor solution, the jet either disrupted into droplets for the formation of spherical particles or was stretched in the electric field for the formation of fibers. During the electrospray process, the ethanol solvent was evaporated and induced the solidification of precursors, forming solid particles. The evaporation of ethanol solvent also enhanced the mass transport of solutes from the inner core to the solid shell, which facilitated fabrication of porous and hollow structure. The network structures were also prepared by heating the collector.
To examine the potential utilization of chitosan, the biodegradable natural polymer, as a control agent of apple white rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea in a new control measure by coating it on the diseased branches, the various antifungal activities of chitosan was investigated. Chitosan showed significant inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of B. dothidea, along with the morphological changes including hyphal swelling and ultrastructural changes on solid PDA medium. In liquid PD broth medium, the chitosan showed more significant effect on the growth of B. dothidea also forming cell clusters indicating affection on the hyphal extension. The growth of B. dothidea was inhibited more than 90% at the concentration of 1.0 mg/ml. Chitosan also detained the spore germination and induced the morphological change of germ tubes. Glucosamine, monomer of chitosan, did not affect on the growth of B. dothidea indicating the antifungal activity was caused by chitosan polymer.
