  • A new rod-like liquid crystalline monomer having divinyl terminal groups was synthesized and polymerized by using thiol-ene UV polymerization technique. High quality thin film with good retardation value was prepared on a rubbed alignment layer without the inert gas purging. The retardation value of the resulting film was controlled by experimental conditions such as spin speed, concentration, and spin time. From the retardation value and thickness measurement, ${\bigtriangleup}n$ was calculated to be 0.169 for the resulting film having thickness of 815.1 nm.

  • The crosslinked films retaining cholesteric liquid-crystalline order were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) in methanol with the two kinds of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides (succinyl chloride and suberoyl chloride). The temperature dependence on the cholesteric pitch of the crosslinked films and the swelling behavior of the films in both water and methanol were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns charateristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the pitch of all crosslinked samples was much greater than that of HPC at the same temperature and increased with increasing concentration and chain length of the crosslinker. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both solvents. The degree of anisotropy slightly depended on the solvent and crosslinker species, but hardly on the crosslinker concentration investigated.

  • Microstructural morphology of molded composites of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and polyamide 6 (PA6) has been studied as a function of epoxy fraction. Injection-moulding of a thin composite plaque at a temperature below the melting point of the LCP fibrils by suing the extruded LCP/PA6 pellets produced multi-layered structures: 1) the surface skin layer with thickness of 65-120 ym exhibiting a transverse orientation, 2) the sub-skin layer with an orientation perpendicular to the surface skin, i.e. in the flow direction, 3) the core layer with arc-curved flow patterns. Similar microstructural orientations were observed in the respective layers for the composite plaques with different fractions of epoxy.

  • We have studied the realigning behavior of liquid crystal molecules in liquid crystalline polymer/liquid crystal(LCP/LC) system when they are exposed to external stimulation such as bending and pressing. The birefringence of the LCP/LC in a flexible display device was measured as a function of bending or pressing deformation. The microscopic dynamic behavior of main chain, side chain, and the LC were characterized by FTIR and polarization optical microscopy. When the device is deformed in scattering memory state, liquid crystal(LC) director is found to align from randomly oriented domain state(scattering state) to homeotropic state.

  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP)/poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) ternary blends were prepared by melt blending, and were melt-spun to fibers at various spinning speeds in an effort to improve fiber performance and processability. Structure and property relationship of TLCP/PEN/PET ternary blend fibers and effects of annealing on those were investigated. The mechanical properties of ternary blend fibers could be significantly improved by annealing, which were attributed to the development of more ordered crystallites and the formation of more perfect crystalline structures. TLCP/PEN/PET ternary blend fibers that annealed at 18$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, exhibited the highest values of tensile strength and modulus. The double melting behaviors observed in the annealed ternary blend fibers depended on annealing temperature and time, which might be caused by different lamellae thickness distribution as a result of the melting-reorganization process during the DSC scans.

  • We used melt polymerization method to prepare a series of aromatic liquid crystals (LCs) based on aromatic ester and amide units with the reactive methyl-maleimide end group, and then the resulting thermally cross-linked LCs to produce LC thermoset films by means of solution casting and the followed heat treatment. The synthesized LCs and LCTs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) with a hot stage. All of the LCs prepared by melt polymerization method formed smectic mesophases. The thermal properties of the LC and LCT films were strongly affected by the mesogen units in the main chain structures. The thermal expansion coefficients of samples were in the range of 27.72~50.95 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.

  • A new concept of the microlens array is fabricated using a birefringent layer on the concave microlens array. The stacked layers of liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) and the UV epoxy focus an incident light due to the surface relief structure. The ferroelectric liquid crystal layer was added to control the focusing intensity with a fast switching time.
