  • 베레만의 4 * 4행렬방정식을 써서 액정판의 편광투과특성을 분석하는 프로그램을 개발하고, 이를 써서 액정셀과 편광판의 편광투과특성을 살펴보았다. 개발된 프로그램을 써서 정상백색 모우드의 꼬인 네마틱(TNLTwisted Nematic) 액정셀에서 시야각에 따른 명암대비의 변화를 보여주는 등고선을 그려내어 그 특성을 예측할 수 있었다. 또한 편광판의 투과특성은 입사각이 커짐에 따라 투과된 빛의 편광타원의 주축이 투과축 방향에서 벗어나며 타원도가 커지는 것이 밝혀졌는데, 이 결과는 액정표시소자의 명암대비가 액정판만이 아니라 편광판의 특성에 의해서도 제한될 수 있음을 시사한다.

Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon 소자에서 액정의 프리틸트각에 따른 Disclination Line 발생 (Generation of Disclination Line Dependent on Liquid Crystal's Pretilt Angle in Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Devices)

  • We have studied how surface pretilt angle affects generation of disclination line in liquid-crystal-on silicon cells for 45$^{\circ}$-twisted nematic (TN) and vertical alignment (VA) modes with pixel size of 15$\mu\textrm{m}$. Our studies show that when the pretilt angle is increased from 0$^{\circ}$to 3$^{\circ}$ in the 45$^{\circ}$-TN cell, the disclination line at left side of on-pixel becomes weak and is well suppressed with $\theta$$\_$p/=3$^{\circ}$ although the pixel size Is decreased. In the VA cell, when the pretilt angle is decreased from 89$^{\circ}$ to 86$^{\circ}$, the disclination line at right side of the on-pixel is suppressed well and even for a smaller pixel size, it does not exist when $\theta$$\_$p/=86$^{\circ}$. The results inform that the pretilt angle strongly affects the image quality of microdisplays.

  • In this paper, we have improved a novel fast response time liquid crystal operating mode using tilt angle in the unique condition by hot-plate equipment. The new control of tilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed homeotropic polyimide (PI) using baking method by Hot-plate equipment was investigated. LC tilt angle decreased with increasing baking temperature and time. Especially, the low LC tilt angle of positive type NLC (${\Delta}n$>0) on the rubbed homeotropic PI surface by increasing temperature and time was measured. The EO characteristics of the high tilted OCB(HTOCB) mode using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface than that of conventional OCB cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed the HTOCB cell using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time and a high contrast ratio.

  • Electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by fringe field using a nematic LC with positive dielectric anisotropy have been studied. Optimized optical configurations are achieved by using a single polarizer, half-wave film and a cell with quarter-wave retardation. The simulation results shows an optimum cell retardation of $0.30{\mu}m$. This value may allow a practical cell gap larger than $3{\mu}m$, which makes it easy to control in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, this LC cell with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $100{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160{\circ}$ in horizontal direction. Also, when using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy rather than negative dielectric anisotropy, the display shows low power consumption and fast response time.

  • The FFS (fringe-field switching) mode was known to exhibit both a wide viewing angle and high transmittance, especially when using a liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. We have studied cell gap-dependent electrode-optic characteristics of the FFS mode using the LC with negative dielectric anisotropy. In case of a small cell gap of 2 ${\mu}$m, the transmittance at the center of pixel and common electrodes is relatively low because effect of surface anchoring that holds the LC to the initial state is larger than that in a large cell gap of 4 .urn such that the LCs in those regions cannot rotate enough. However, in case of a large cell gap of 4 .urn, the effect of surface anchoring becomes relatively small so that the LCs at the center of pixel and common electrode can be twisted enough by applied voltage, giving rise to high transmittance. Therefore, we can conclude that the light efficiency is dependent on the cell gap.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective $45^{\circ}$ twisted nematic liquid crystal display which implement the new LC orientation using of in-cell retarder film. For the embodiment of reflective liquid crystal display, essentially the optic compensation films was always needed and attached to the outside of glass substrate. In our study, these optic compensation film were not employed in reflective LC cell. On other hand we have employed the in-cell retarder to substitute the optic compensation film and were able to orient the LC molecules using this in-cell retarder. So we have developed the reflective LC cell that has good optical performances without any additional coating process on the in-cell retarder.

무기막에서의 수형배향된 액정의 특성에 대한 연구 (Inorganic Thin film for Horizontal Aligned Liquid Crystal with Non-rubbing Technologies)

  • 본 연구에서는 폴리이미드 박막위에서의 수직 및 수평배향에서 혼합액정의 배향 특성에 대해서 연구하였다. 혼합액정은 러빙을 이용하여 배향처리하였으며, 러빙에 사용된 폴리이미드 박막은 알킬기를 Side Chain으로 가진 수직배향용 배향막과 그렇지 배향막으로 나누어서 프리틸트각 특성을 측정하였다. 실험결과 혼합액정을 사용하여 양호한 배향상태를 얻을 수 있었으며, 고온에서의 열 안정성에서도 우수한 특성을 보이는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 프리틸트각의 발생 원리를 이해하기 위해서 접촉각 측정을 실시하였으며, 이 둘이 밀접한 상관관계를 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다

  • We have studied the liquid crystal alignment properties for various alignment methods on the homogeneous polyimide surface. Suitable liquid crystal alignment for one-side alignment cell on the polyimide surface by all alignment method was observed. Highly pre-tilt angle of the NLC for both-side rubbing cell was measured. But, low pre-tilt angle of the NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation cell was observed. We consider that the pre-tilt angle of NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation on the PI surface is lower than that of the PI surface with rubbing. Also, the suitable transmittance-voltage curves for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side UV irradiation were measured. Also, good response time characteristics of the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the polyimide surface with one-side UV irradiation can be measured.

광감성 폴리비닐플루오로신나메이트의 액정 배향에 관한 연구 (Studies of Liquid Crystal Alignment on the Photosensitive Polyvinylfluorocinnamate)

  • 편광 푸리에 변환 적외선 분광법(polarized fourier transform infrared spectroscopy)과 자외선 분광법(ultraviolet spectroscopy)을 이용하여 액정 디스플레이 (liquid crystal display, LCD)의 배향막으로 사용 가능한 Polyvulylfluoroclnnamate(PVCN-F) 필름의 편광 자외선(Polarized UV, PUV) 조사 및 러빙에 따른 액정의 배향 메커니즘에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. UV의 조사시간이 증가함에 따라 PVCN-F cinnamoyl group의 C=C기들의 cycloaddition 반응으로 인하여 $1638cm^{-1}$에서 나타나는 vinylene -C=C- FT-IR 흡수 피크들의 면적이 감소하고, $1712cm^{-1}$에서 나타나는 conjugated C=O 신축진동에 의한 피크가 nonconjugated C=O 신축진동 피크인 $1734cm^{-1}$로 이동함을 확인하였다. 또한 PUV가 조사된 PVCN-F 배향막을 사용하여 제조된 액정 셀에서는 조사된 PUV의 극성 방향과 수직으로 액정이 배향함을 확인하였고, 러빙 방법으로 제조된 PVCN-F 배향막을 사용한 액정 셀에서는 액정이 러빙 방향과 수평으로 배향됨을 dichroic dye(이색성 염료)의 첨가 없이 편광 FT-IR 스팩트럼을 사용하여 확인하였다.

In-plane Switching Liquid Crystal Cell with a Mixed Bent Electrode Structure for Fast Response Time

  • A bent electrode structure is proposed in the super in-plane switching (S-IPS) liquid crystal (LC), as it can reduce the response time without loss of transmittance in the bright state. The electrode angle in each position of the bent electrode was optimized to simultaneously achieve high transmittance and fast response time. The electro-optical characteristics of the proposed LC cell structure were experimentally compared with those of the conventional cell. It was observed that the response time became over 8% shorter without loss of transmittance when the proposed bent structure was applied.
