  • Effect of contamination of liquid crystal on the electrical behavior of liquid crystal display (LCD) by spilled components from color filter layer was investigated. It is noted that the level of contamination was different following the kind of liquid crystal and organic layers. Transmittance curve of LCD cell was shifted by spilled components of color filter and BM materials. C-V curve also showed different behavior following color filter type. The results obtained show the image sticking of LCD can be varied by pairing liquid crystal with color filter materials.

  • This paper describes a fabrication method for high transmittance panel using newly designed polarizer and liquid crystal with a high dielectric anisotropy (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$). To enhance the transmittance of the panel without contrast ratio reduction, new polarizer with high transmittance and high ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ liquid crystal were used. The transmittance of the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel employed by a new polarizer was increased by 6% over that of the panel with a conventional polarizer and liquid crystal in LCD industry.

  • To promote liquid crystal application of nanoimprint lithography, a polymer with new concept is proposed. The material consists of a polyamic acid for good LC alignment and an epoxy resin for good imprinting. The result of sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy proves that this material is a functionally gradient material. This material shows excellent capability as a nanoimprinting material as well as an LC alignment layer.

  • An information display device is a key component in the information society. A liquid crystal display is the most widely used among information display devices. However, its performance still needs to be improved in order to survive in competition with other information display devices. In this paper, we explain the structure and the operation principle of a liquid crystal display device and introduce our recent research activities on liquid crystal mode technology.

  • In this study, the spectrum changes induced from the doping of phosphor micro particles in a twist nematic liquid crystal cell was observed. The experimental results show that the achromatic transmission can be observed with a proper driving condition, which may be applied to the design of an achromatic liquid crystal device. In this paper, we tried to figure out the spectrum changes induced from the doping of phosphor micro particles. The experimental result of the phosphor powder doped twist nematic liquid crystal cell shows that the achromatic transmission and the wavelength linearly dependent transmission both can be observed with some proper driving conditions, respectively. The result is useful on developing an achromatic liquid crystal device and it can be applied for Vihicle lamp.

  • Several aspects of polymer dispersed liquid crystal(PDLC) film properties make them interesting for display application. Most versions of PDLC materials are able to modulate light without the use of polarizers, which offers advantages in optical throughput(brightness) and viewing angle compared to polarizer-based display. In this papers, we attemped to doe minimum of remaining liquid crystals at polymer network for the liquid crystal-polymer composite (LCPC) films. In results, best phase separation behaviors turned out liquid crystal/monomer/oligomer mixture system.

  • We report several difluoro isothiocyanato tolane-based liquid crystal (LC) singles having a high optical birefringence. Several eutectic mixtures are formulatd using these LC singles exhibiting a wide nematic phase range and high birefringence. We will report the physical properties of and photochemical stability of these new eutectic mixtures.

  • Flaws in GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics) were thermally detected using cholesteric liquid crystals. Presence of flaws changes the thermal conductivity of GFRP, and disturbs heat flow. When a uniform heat source is applied, the surface temperature of flawed region is different from that of sound region. The surface temperature distributions were measured by thermo-optic properties of liquid crystal. Since the colors of liquid crystal indicate temperature distribution of GFRP surface, the thermal disturbance by flaws could be detected. The locations of flaws in GFRP could be determined from the distribution of liquid crystal colors.
