  • A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Pressure of the main combustion chamber, nozzle expansion ratio and O/F ratio have been selected as design variables. The target engine has the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The gas properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2 and the mass has been estimated using reference data. The objective function has been set as multi-objective function with the specific impulse and thrust to weight ratio using the weight method. The result shows about 4% improvement of the specific impulse and 23% increase of the thrust to weight ratio. The Pareto frontier line has been also obtained for various thrust requirements.

  • The cooling mechanism for a regenerative cooling liquid rocket engine of 10tf-thrust using kerosene as a fuel was studied from the viewpoint of curtain cooling. Based on the concept of a highly-stratified gas flow in the combustion chamber, the cross section of the combustion chamber was spilt into 2 independent parts, core and exterior part. Additional fuel is injected into the exterior section and gas temperature can be reduced in the exterior section. Consequently, the heat flux into the coolant and wall temperature are reduced and the thermal stability of a liquid rocket engine could be improved.

  • The tensile strength test and the analysis for the section of brazing were performed in the cases of materials used for combustion chamber of regeneratively cooled liquid rocket engine. BNi-2 and BNi-7 based on nickel were used for brazing as filler metal. The properties of material and filler metal were analyzed by tensile strength test and metal microscope for 12 specimens. The tensile-strength of brazing for chrome-copper alloy and other kinds of alloy was higher than that of chrome-zirconium-copper alloy and other kinds of alloy The tensile strength in the case of BNi-2 as filler metal was higher than that of BNi-7 because the wetting property of BNi-2 was better than that of BNi-7.

  • This paper presents pressure fluctuation characteristics of a 30 ton-f class liquid rocket engine combustor. Combustion stability of the combustor was evaluated using the results 46 firing tests performed with a varying O/F ratio and chamber pressure. The RMS value of pressure fluctuation during the steady state combustion was less than 2.6% of the static chamber pressure, demonstrating static stability of the combustion phenomenon. The decay time of pressure fluctuation caused by forced disturbance of a pulse gun was found to be less than 3.5 msec verifying dynamic stability of the combustor.

  • A set of preliminary design parameters for the bipropellant rocket engine using liquid methane-fuel as green propellant were derived through a theoretical performance analysis. Chemical equilibrium analysis utilizing CEA was conducted for the prediction of combustion performance: combustion characteristics according to the O/F ratio and chamber pressure variation were investigated. For a determination of chamber-characteristic length, the vaporization time of fuel-droplet with various performance parameters was calculated by applying Spalding's 1-D droplet vaporization model. Finally, the preliminary design specification of methane-bipropellant rocket engine, which is to be performance-tested under the ground firing condition, was proposed.

  • The KSLV-II(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II) which being a successor of the KSLV-I is a space launch vehicle capable of delivering 1.5 ton-class satellite into a low earth orbit. The development of a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine(LRE) is planned on the basis of the technologies mastered through the preceded research of a 30 tonf-class LRE. The thrust chamber of the LRE is required to have higher combustion stability, structural integrity and thermal durability. This paper deals with the design requirements of the 75-tonf thrust chamber and a variety of technical considerations which have been conducted analytically in the course of the design for the realization of the requirements.

The material of the inner jacket is copper alloy/STS329J1/STS316L and that of the outer jacket is STS329J1. The components of· the combustor were manufactured by mechanical processing including lathing, milling, MCT, rolling and pressing. The machined components were integrated to a single body by means of general welding, electron beam welding(EBW), and brazing.

  • The objective of the present study is to develop methodology for the assesment of combustion stability of liquid rocket injectors. To simulate actual combustion occurring inside of a thrust chamber, a full-scale injector has been employed in the study, which burns gaseous oxygen and mixture of methane and propane. The main idea of the experiment is that the mixing mechanism is considered as a dominant factor significantly affecting combustion instability in a full-scale thrust chamber. Single & multi split triplet injectors have been used with an open-end cylindrical combustion chamber. The characteristics revealed by excited dynamic pressures in gaseous combustion show degrees of relative acoustic damping depending on operating conditions. Upon test results, the direct comparison between various types of injectors can be realized for the selection of the best design among prospective injectors.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical design parameters of injectors. A subscale thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle, which allows a chamber to be reused without replacing parts. Two different designs of injectors have been tested for the understanding of the effects of recess length on combustion. Clearly, the recess length drastically affects the combustion efficiency and hydraulic characteristics of the injector. Internal mixing of propellants in the injector with the recess number of two increases a combustion efficiency and reveals sound combustion although a pressure drop required for the similar amount of mass flow rates increases compared with the injector of the recess number of one.
