  • The forty vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the binary system, HFC125+Propane, were measured between 273.15 and 313.15 K at 10 K interval and the composition range 0.2∼0.75, respectively. Experiments were performed in a circulation type apparatus in which the vapor phase was forced through the liquid phase. The composition at equilibrium were mea-sured by gas chromatography, and its response was calibrated using gravimetrically prepared mixtures. Vapor-liquid equilibrium data were calculated by using CSD equation of state and compared with the experimental data.

  • Many studies have examined the use of liquid membranes for various processes such as separations of isomers, gas, organic mixtures, and removal of specific ions. It has been reported that liquid membranes show high selectivity. However, it is difficult to apply the liquid membranes to practical industrial processes because of the low stability of the liquid membranes.(omitted)

  • This paper deals with a prediction method for the condensation of ternary refrigerant mixture inside a horizontal smooth tube. Based on some reliable assumptions, the governing equations for the local heat and mass transfer characteristics are derived, and the prediction for the condensation of ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a, including R407C, is carried out. The local values of vapor quality, thermodynamic states at bulk vapor, vapor-liquid interface and bulk liquid, mass flux etc. are obtained for a constant wall temperature and a constant wall heat flux conditions, and the effects of the composition of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a on heat transfer characteristics are examined. The prediction result is also compared with experimental data for condensation of ternary refrigerant mixtures. The predicted wall temperature distribution has a similar trend with experimental data but the predicted local heat transfer coefficients are 20-30% higher than the experimental data.

  • Ultrasonic velocity and density measurements have been undertaken for a number of binary liquid mixtures involving different commercial solvent extractants, LIX reagents. The binary mixtures under investigation have been classified under two categories such as polar-polar, and polar-non-polar types. Different theories and relations such as Schaaff's Collision Factor Theory (CFT), Nomoto's relation (NOM), and Van Dael & Vangeel ideal mixing relation (IMR) have been used to evaluate the velocity theoretically for all these binary systems. The relative merits of afore-mentioned theories and relations compared to experimental values of velocity have been discussed in terms of percentage variations. However, the CFT and Nomoto's relation show better agreement with the experimental findings than the ideal mixing relation for all the systems under investigation.

  • We have designed, synthesized, and evaluated the physical properties of some high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) isothiocyanato biphenyl-bistolane liquid crystals. These compounds exhibit ${\Delta}n^-$ 0.4-0.7 at room temperature and wavelength $\lambda$=633 nm. Laterally substituted short alkyl chains and fluorine atom eliminate smectic phase and lower the melting temperature. The moderate melting temperature and very high clearing temperature make those compounds attractive for eutectic mixture formulation. Several mixtures based on those compounds were formulated and its physical properties evaluated.

  • The present study is directed at flow and heat transfer of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures in a circular tube. PAG and POE oils are considered in this study. Flow characteristics of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures have been investigated by flow visualization. Pressure drop has been measured in the range of operating mass flow rate from 0.1 to 0.4 kg/min in a circular tube. Heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$/oil mixtures have been investigated using a counterflow heat exchanger. In case of pure liquid $CO_2$ as well as $CO_2$ and POE mixtures, flow are seen to be uniform so that $CO_2$ and POE oil are still miscible even at flowing state. However, it is found that $CO_2$ and PAG are not miscible. Pressure drop of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/POE mixtures as well as pure $CO_2$ at a fixed mass flow rate. As the concentration of POE oil is increased from 0 to 5 wt%, pressure drop is increased. However, heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$/POE mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures. The f-factor correlation and Nusselt number correlation for $CO_2$/POE oil mixtures are suggested in this paper.

  • An experimental apparatus was constructed to obtain vapor-liquid equilibrium data for $CO_2$/oil mixtures using mass analysis method with sample cylinder. Lubricants employed were POE(Polyol Ester) oil and PAG(Poly Alkylene Glycol) oil. The phase equilibria of $CO_2$/oil mixtures formed in high pressure equilibrium cell are observed through sight glasses at the opposite ends. Data were measured over the temperature range from -10 to $10^{\circ}C$ with $5^{\circ}C$ intervals under pressures up to 14 MPa. Mole fractions were calculated for $CO_2$/oil and $CO_2$/PAAG, respectively and were compared with each other.

  • The research on the explosive limits is one of fundamental fields of combustion process, and information on the explosive limits of mixture of fuel and oxidant, with or without additives, is very important for the prevention in industrial fire and explosion accidents. Explosive limits of all compounds and solvent mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Batten, Le Chatelier and MRSM(modified response surface methodology) model. In this study, the reference values of lower explosive limits(LEL) of the ethanol+toluene+ethylacetate system were compared with the calculated values by using the solution thermodynamics and the MRSM model, respectively. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. By means of this methodology, it is possible to evaluate reliability of experimental data of the lower explosive limits of the flammable mixtures. Also, from given results, it is possible to predict explosive limits of the other flammable liquid mixtures used in the chemical process by the use of the proposed equations.

  • This paper presents the results of a theoretical study of the effect of radiation during free convective laminar film boiling for methanol/water binary mixtures on an isothermal vertical wall at atmospheric pressure. With the well-known boundary layer theory as a basis, a theoretical model has been formulated into consideration for mass diffusion at liquid phase. The equations are numerically solved by a similarity method to investigate the effects of radiation emissivity on the surface with various parameters such as wall superheat and composition of more volatile component at liquid phase far from the wall. From the results, the distributions of the physical quantifies are investigated in both phases. New correlations are proposed to predict the heat transfer coefficient of binary mixtures. It is shown that the proposed correlations are in good agreement with numerical results and with Bromley's correlation within maximum $11\%$ errors. It is also found that as the wall superheat is increased, radiation effect becomes more important.
