  • To reduce the construction cost and enhance the safety of sodium cooled liquid metal reactors, various kinds of new design concepts were evaluated using the KALIMER operation condition. The required equipment sizes were set for plant electricity output to be similar to that of KALIMER. The evaluations were made focusing on the plant performance and implementation practicality. Each design concept was evaluated for the concept itself and design impacts to interfacing systems. Through the evaluation of the concepts, it was found that the most favorable design concept is the integrated steam generator with forced convection using lead bismuth as the intermediate heat transfer fluid between the primary sodium tube and feed water/steam tube in the steam generator.

  • Failure of a suspension clamp made of hot dip galvanized cast iron in 154kV transmission tower was investigated. Metallurgical analysis of a crack of the clamp was performed using a digital microscope, an optical microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. It was revealed that the crack surface was covered by continuous zinc layer. Distinctive casting skin was found underneath both the outer surface and crack surface. The result showed that pre-existing crack had been formed in the fabrication, and liquid metal embrittlement during hot dip galvanization may assist crack propagation.

  • The TiC-Co/Al reaction-sintered products were prepared by the infiltration of various Co/Al metal mixture into the preform, and their microstructure, phases, and mechanical properties were investigated. With increasing the atomic ratio of Co/Al, tiC grain shape was changed from spherical to platelet particles, and the grain size increased. The crystalline phases found in the liquid matrix formed by the infiltration of Co/Al metal mixture were determined to be Al5Co2 and AlCo by EDS and XRD, and the two crystalline phases were located dominantly between TiC grains, when the Co/Al atomic ratio was lower than an unity. There was a tendency that the density, bending strength and fracture toughness increase with Co/Al atomic ratio until the infiltrated metal was 100% Co. The maximum value was achieved by the composition containing 100% Co infiltrated metal. The Vickers hardness decreased as Co/Al atomic ratio increased.

  • The bonding phenomena and mechanical property of duplex stainless steel during brazing have been investigated. The UNS32550 was used for base metal, and the MBF50 was used for insert metal. Brazing was carried out under the various conditions (brazing temperature : 1473K, 1498K, holding time : 0∼1.8ks). There were various microconstituents in the bonded interlayer because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metal. In the early stage of brazing, BN is formed in the bonded interlayer and base metal near the bonded layer. Cr made is formed in the bonded interlayer. The amount of BN and Cr nitrides decrease with the increase of bonding temperature and holding time. Superior shear strength of 550MPa is obtained by restraining the formation of nitrides. • The characteristics of thixoforming process can decrease liquid segregation because of the improvement in fluidity in a globular microstructure state and utilizes flow without an air entrapment. Therefore, in order to obtain the sound parts of metal matrix composites by using thixoforming process which has co-existing solidus-liquidus phase, it is very important to design a die shape property and to obtain the fabrication conditions which affect the unifomity of the solid fraction on unfilling state and various defects throughout the fabricated parts. The die designs and fabrication conditions to obtain the good piston part are proposed for thixoforging process of metal matrix composites. When reheated metal matrix composites billets were transferred to the closed die gate, thixoforging were carried out under the various pressure(60, 80, 100MPa) with controled forging speed. The mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength for thixoforged parts have been investigated after T6 heat treatment.

  • The characteristics of evaporation cooling of single droplet on a heated surface were studied experimentally. The two kinds of heater modules were tested to measure cooling characteristics of metal surface (high conductivity) and Teflon surface (low-energy surface, low conductivity). The results showed that time averaged heat flux during droplet evaporation increased exponentially with initial surface temperatures of brass, copper and steel. The heat flux and evaporation time did not varied with metal conductivities. However, the temperature drop after the deposition of droplet was larger on Teflon than on the metals. Thus, the correlation of interface temperature between liquid droplet and metal surface was proposed as a function of the initial surface temperature of heating materials, which could be applied to both metal and non-metal ones.

  • Honing, lapping, polishing and superfinishing are applied for a precision machining to finish the metal surface, but these precision machining are micro-cutting by hard and micro-abrasive grains. Frictional machining is the new method to finish mirrorlike surface without using those abrasive grains. The frictional machining produces high pressure and high temperature instantly by compressing a tool material against the metal surface in sliding motion. The metal surface is given plastic deformation and plastic flow by the above mentioned frictional motion, but the surface roughness of the metal surface is influenced by physical and chemical reaction in surrounding atmosphere. Therefore, the atmosphere around the metal optimum atmosphere in the frictional machining. The part 1 of the study was performed in liquid atmospheres. Diesel oil, lubricant, grease, lard oil, bean oil and cutting fluid were used as such atmospheres. Medium carbon steel SM 50 C was used as a workpiece and ceramic tip was applied as a frictional tool. The result of the experiment showed characteristic machining conditions to generate the best surface roughness in each atmospheres.

  • Turbopump is typically an assembly of rotors and casings, and there are a number of joints between them. Every joint should be leak-proof, so there is always a seal to accomplish the goal. Among various seals, metal seals are advantageous in that they are robust at high pressure, and at wide range of temperature. On the other hand, they require very high tightening forces, so that flanges, bolts and nuts should be carefully designed to ensure structural integrity and to prevent detrimental yielding of components. In this study, flange joints using conical seals made of stainless steel, solid flat metal seals made of copper and metal C-seals made of Inconel 718 were structurally designed and analyzed, considering both initial tightening and operating conditions.

  • The preparation of $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ thin films from less than one micron to several tens of microns in thickness had been prepared from metal alkoxide sols. Two methods, dip-withdrawal and electrophoretic deposition, were employed for thin films and sheets formation. The requirements to be satisfied by the solution for preparing uniform and strong films and by the factors affecting thickness and other properties of the films were examined. For the preparation of thin, continuous $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ films, therefore, metal-organic-derived precursor solutions contained Si and Al in a chemically polymerized form has been developed and produced in a clear liquid state. In the process of applying to substrates, this liquid left a transparent, continuous film that could be converted to crystalline $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ upon heating to $1000^{\circ}C$. And, a significant change of the film density took place in the crystallization process, thus leading to the strict requirements as to the film thickness, which could survive crystallization.

  • The heavy metal effects on the degradation of fluorene by Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 10 mg/L cadmium, copper, zinc, and lead not only affected the growth of KM-02 with fluorene but also the ability of growing or resting cells to degrade this compound. Growth and fluorene degradation were strongly inhibited by cadmium and copper at 10 mg/L, while the inhibitory effect of zinc and lead at the same concentration or at 100 mg/L were not significant. In contrast, arsenic did not affect degradation or growth, even at very high concentrations of 100 mg/L. Subsequent analyses additionally revealed that concentrations of arsenic remained unchanged following incubation, while those of cadmium and copper decreased significantly.
