  • Experimental investigation was made to study the mechanism of fluid and thermal oscillation phenomena of surface-tension driven flow in a cylindrical liquid column heated from above which is the low-gravity floating zone simulated on earth. Hexadecane, octadecane, silicon oil (10cs), FC-40 and water are used as the test liquids. The onset of the oscillatory thermocapillary convection appears when Marangoni number exceeds its criteria value and is found to be due to the coupling among velocity and temperature field with the free surface deformation. The frequency of temperature oscillation decreases with increasing aspect ratio for a given diameter and Marangoni number and the oscillation level increases with Marangoni number. The flow pattern in the liquid column appears either as symmetric or asymmetric 3-D flow due to the oscillatory flow in the azimuthal direction. The free surface deformation also occurs either as symmetric or asymmetric mode and its frequency is consistent with those of flow and temperature oscillations. The amplitude of surface deformation also increases with Marangoni number.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted to investigate a modified floating-zone crystal growth process in which most of the melt surface is covered with a heated ring. The crystal rod is not only pulled downward but rotated around its axisymmetric line during crystal growth process in order to produce the flat interface of crystal growth and the single crystal growth of NaNO3 is considered in 6mm diameter. The present study is made from a full-equation-based analysis considering a pulling velocity in all of solid and liquid domains and both of solid-liquid interfaces are tracked simultaneously with a governing equation in each domain. Numerical results are mainly presented for the comparison of the surface shape of rotational crystal rod with that of no-rotational crystal rod and the effects of revolution speeds of the crystal rod. Results show that the rotation of crystal rod produces more its flat surface. In addition, the shape of crystal growth near the centerline is more concaved with the increase in the revolution speed of crystal rod. The flow pattern and temperature distribution is analyzed and presented in each case. As the pulling velocity of crystal rod is increasing, the free surface of the melt below the heated ring is enlarged due to the crystal interface migrating downward.

  • The Ga2O3 single crystal was grown through a floating zone method, and its structural and optical properties were instigated. It has a monoclinic crystal structure with a (100) crystal orientation and an optical band gap energy of 4.6 eV. It showed an average transmittance of 70% in the visible region. At room temperature, its photoluminescent spectrum showed three different peaks: the ultraviolet at 360 nm, the blue-green at 500 nm, and the red peaks at 700 nm. Especially, at liquid nitrogen temperature, the ultraviolet peak was optically active while the others were quenched.

  • The thermocapillary flow in a differentially heated cylindrical liquid bridge under steady rotation of the hot disk is considered in the limit of zero capillary number. Steady flow states and their three-dimensional stability are calculated numerically. A linear stability analysis reveals that the most dangerous perturbations are oscillatory with azimuthal wavenumber m=1 or m=2 depending on the parameters.

  • An experiment is carried out to study the surface-tension driven flow characteristics in a cylindrical liquid column heated from above (which is the low gravity floating zone simulated on earth) with varing the aspect ratio and diameter of the liquid column. Hexadecane, octadecane, silicon oil(10cs), FC-40 and water are used as the test liquids. The free surface shape varies sinusoidally for Ma>M $a_{cr}$ and its frequency is found to be the same as that of temperature oscillation. It is verified that the surface temperature profile changes from linear to S-shaped profile for Ma>M $a_{cr}$ . The frequency of temperature oscillation decreases with increasing liquid volume, while its level increases. M $a_{cr}$ decreases with increasing aspect ratio, and also decreases with increasing Prandtl number in the range of 25

  • Polycrystalline powder of vanadium-doped forsterite (Vδ $Mg_2SiO_4$) was synthesized by the $H_2O_2$-assisted sol-gel method. The vanadium dopant, which was added as VO$(OMe)_3$ in methanol, went through several redox reactions as the sol-gel reaction proceeded. Upon adding VO$(OMe)_3$ to a mixture of $Mg(OMe)_2$ and Si$(OEt)_4$ in methanol, V(V) reduced to V(IV). As hydrolysis reaction proceeded, the V(IV) oxidized all back to V(V). Apparently, some of the V(V) reduced to V(IV) during subsequent gelation by condensation reaction. The V(IV) remained even after heat treatment of the gel in highly oxidizing atmosphere. The crystallization of the xerogel around 880 ℃ readily produced single phase forsterite without any minor phase. Using the polycrystalline powder as feeding stock, single crystals of vanadium-doped forsterite were grown by the floating zone method in oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. The doping was limited in low level because of the high partitioning of the vanadium in liquid phase during melting. The greenish single crystal absorbed visible light of 700∼1100 nm. But, no emission was obtained in near infrared range.

  • $YbFeCoO_4$ single crystal was grown by floating zone method. The atmospheric condition of the growth was controlled in air and the growth rate was 1~2 mm/hr. After melting the feed rod of the composition of $YbFeCoO_4$, $YbFeCoO_4$ was decomposed to $YbFeCoO_4$ and CoO phase in the initial state of the growth. The liquid composition, however, changed to the direction of the eutectic point along the liquidus line and then stopped at the point in which $YbFeCoO_4$ single crystal could be grown. The growth direction of the crystal was preferred orientation [110], perpendicular to the c-axis in the hexagonal system due to using the polycrystalline seed.
