액정성 전방향족 폴리에스테르 (Liquid Crystalline Aromatic Polyesters)

  • 선형 방향족 폴리에스테르는 열방성 액정중합체의 대표적 예로 지금까지 그 구조-액정성 관계가 많이 연구되었다. 본 논문에서는 지난 4반세기 동안 본 연구진이 행한 연구결과를 중심으로 액정성 전방향족 폴리에스테르의 열적특성 및 액정성을 그 화학구조와 관련지어 논의한다. 특히 미세화학구조의 변경이 어떻게 액정성에 영향을 주는가에 논의의 초점을 두었다. 특히 선형구조에서 크게 벗어나는 복합형 액정성 폴리에스테르 및 액정성 고차가지구조 폴리에스테르도 조감하였다. 고차가지구조 고분자는 덴드리머와 관련하여 많은 관심을 끌고 있다. 이 고분자들의 합성법도 말미에 소개하고 있다.

Synthesis and Properties of Side Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers with Siloxane Flexible Chain

  • Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers having polysiloxane skeletons were synthesized by a thiol-ene reaction, using two kinds of mesogenic groups: a cholesteryl group for induction into a cholesteric liquid crystal phase and a triazomesogenic group for imparting light-sensitivity. All the synthesized polymers were crystalline, except the one with a single cholesteryl group. Crystallinity, glass transition temperature, and melt transition temperature increased with increasing content of the azomesogenic group. The polymer (P-C10A0) with a single cholesteryl group has a cholesteric phase, the one (P-C0A10) with a single azomesogenic group has a smectic phase, and those with both types of mesogenic groups showed both smectic and cholesteric phases. The temperature ranges of the two liquid crystalline phases in the co-polymers were independent of the contents of the two types of mesogenic groups. The rate of photoisomerization of the light-sensitive azobenzene group in the polymer decreased with increasing azobenzene content due to steric hindrance between the azomesogenic groups.

液晶性 Polyurethane의 合成과 物性에 關한 硏究 (Synthesis and Physical Properties of Liquid-Crystalline Polyurethanes)

  • A number of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyurethanes with mesogenic unit were synthesized by polyaddition of a para-type diisocyanate such as 1, 4-phenylene diisocyanate(1,4-PDI) with 4, 4'-bis($\omega$-hydorxyalkoxy) biphenyls($BP{m}$) in DMF. The thermal and liquid crystab line properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering(WAXS). Intrinsic viscosities of the polymers exbibited two endothermic peaks correspondinding to phase transitions of melting and isotropization. For example, polyurethane(1,4-PDI/($BP{11}$) ) was found to display a liquid crystalline phase between 177 to 205$^{\circ}C$. In order to know how the hydrogen bonding interaction affects the formation of mesophases in polyurethane 1, 4-PDI/($BP{8}$) / thermal processing FT-IR measurements were carried out. It was found that the stretches regarded as shift to higher frequency region with increasing temperature which showed grdually their liquid crystalline phase

  • 알칼리키토산과 프로필렌옥사이드를 반응시킴에 의해 유방성 및 열방성 액정상을 형성하는 새로운 히드록시프로필키토산(HPCTO)을 합성함과 동시에 HPCTO/메탄올의 유방성 액정용액에 glyoxal첨가하여 주형시킴에 의해 HPCTO의 가교필름들을 제조하였다. 가교필름들의 열 및 팽윤 특성을 검토하였다. 필름들은 cholesteric 액정상의 특징적인 지문조직을 나타내었으며 이들의 pitch는 온도 및 가교제의 농도가 증가할수록 증가하였다. 가교시료들은 물과 메탄을 중에서 이방성 팽윤을 나타내었으며, 이러한 사실은 HPCTO분자들간에 2차원적인 가교가 우선적으로 일어남을 시사한다. 이방성 팽윤의 정도는 용매의 종류에 크게 의존하나 검토된 가교제의 농도에는 의존하지 않았다.

Lyotropic Mesomorphisms of a Lamellar Liquid Crystalline Phase in Non-hydrous Condition: A Phospholipid Hydrated by Different Polar Solvents

  • The lyotropic mesomorphism of lamellar liquid crystalline phase was examined by observing the swelling behavior of Distearoylphosphatidylcholine(DSPC) in glycerin and panthenol without water. The lyotropic mesomorphism was examined by using DSC, XRDs and Cryo-SEM. Increase of two polar solvents under non-hydrous condition showed distinctive differences in the lyotropic mesomorphism from forming different anisotropic structures with DSPC. Glycerin did not affect to the crystalline region of lamellar phase, whereas typical swelling mesomorphism was shown in the noncrystalline region. In contrast, panthenol showed some effect on the crystalline region, but common swelling mesomorphism was found in the non-crystalline region. In this case, the isopropyl and propyl groups in panthenol were the main factor to affect to the lipophilic domain in the crystalline region of lamellar phase. Also, it was found that the formation of well-arranged lamellar structure only by introducing glycerin and panthenol as a solvent without water, was possible. These results were confirmed by examination of the swelling mesomorphism of liquid crystal membrane triggered by introducing the two polar solvents.

Structure -Properties Relations of Polypropylene/ Liquid Crystalline Polymer Blends

  • The blends of polypropylene (PP) with glass filled thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP-g) have been prepared by melt mixing techniques at different blend ratios. The thermal, dynamic mechanical, crystalline and morphological characteristics of these blends were investigated. Higher percent crystallinity was observed for 10% level of LCP-g in the blend in comparison to that of other blend ratios. The thermal stability increased with LCP-g concentration in the blend with PP. The variation of storage modulus, stiffness and loss modulus as a function of blend ratios suggested the phase inversion at the 50% level of LCP-g in the blend. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs showed the creation of voids and destruction of the fiber structures during the dynamic mechanical measurements. Processing behavior of the blends depended on the fiber forming characteristics of LCP-g, which again varied with the molding temperatures.

  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer made up of poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)-poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) 8/2 copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and PET were mechanically blended to pursue the liquid crystalline phase of ternary blends. Complex viscosities of blends decreased with increasing temperature and PHB content. DSC thermal analysis indicated that glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) of blends increased with increasing PHB content. Both tensile strength and initial modulus increased with raising PHB content and take-up speed of monofilaments. In the WAXS diagram, only PEN crystal reflection at 2Θ=$15.5^{\circ}C$ appeared but PET crystal reflection was not shown in all compositions. The degree of transesterification and randomness of blends increased with blending time but sequential length of both PEN and PET segment decreased.

  • 정보전자 기기의 디스플레이용 재료로 사용되는 액정/고분자 복합재료의 매트릭스로 사용하기 위한 새로운 선형 및 가교형 측쇄 액정고분자를 제조하기 위하여 필요한 저분자 액정 중간체들을 합성하고 이들의 액정 특성을 살펴보았다. Alkyl spacer의 길이가 다르고 연결기로서 azo기를 그리고 말단기로서 cyano를 공통적으로 가지고 다른 한 말단기로서 bromoalkyl(AZO(n)), azidoalkyl(AZI(n)) 및 amonoalkyl(ALC(n))기를 가지는 저분자 액정 들의 합성을 하였으며 IR, NMR 및 원소분석을 통하여 이를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 DSC thermogram 및 편광현미경 관찰로부터 이들 저분자 액정들은 모두 일정한 온도 영역에서 네마틱 상의 액정성을 발현하는 것을 알았다. 또한, 저분자 액정 분자들이 spacer 길이, 즉 $-(CH_2)n-$의 n이 짝수 및 홀수로 변화함에 따라 분자 내의 conformation 변화에 따른 $T_{KN}$$T_{NI}$의 값이 전형적인 even-odd 변화 현상을 나타내었다.
