Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of New Achiral Liquid Crystals with 3-Alkoxy-2-(alkoxymethyl)-1-propoxy Swallow-Tails

  • New liquid crystalline (biphenylcarbonyloxy)benzoates with an achiral swallow-tail derived from 3-alkoxy-2- (alkoxymethyl)-1-propanol [(ROCH2)2CHCH2OH, R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu] were prepared. These liquid crystals exhibited the phase sequence (I-SmA-SmCalt-(SmCX)-Cr) and showed antiferroelectric-like Smectic C phase (SmCalt) at temperature lower, and temperature range broader than do the compounds containing a branched alkyl group as a swallow-tail. The temperature ranges of antiferroelectric phase were found to be 30-90 oC and crystallization temperatures were 4-60 oC. The binary mixture of an achiral swallow-tailed liquid crystal and a chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC showed antiferroelectric smectic C phase at temperature much lower than the single chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal does.

  • We report on the development of ferronematic liquid crystals, new materials that consist of a dilute suspension of ferroelectric particles in a nematic liquid crystal host. The particles share their ferroelectric properties with the nematic liquid crystal and impose a spontaneous dielectric polarization of about 10 nC/$cm^2$ to the entire medium, typical for many ferroelectric liquid crystals. As expected, these new materials have enhanced dielectric anisotropy and are sensitive to the sign of an applied electric field. The potential of their use in a number of devices are discussed.

  • 폴리머 분산 액정의 전기광학 스위칭 특성에 대한 액정 방울 크기의 효과를 실험적으로 연구하였다. 액정 방울의 크기는 상 분리를 위해 조사하는 레이저 광원의 세기와 LC/oligomer의 혼합 비율에 따라 변화되었다. 전기 광학적 스위칭 전압은 LC/oligomer의 혼합비율과 액정의 방울 크기에 크게 의존하였다. 실험 결과를 보면 상 분리용 조사 레이저광의 세기가 클 때 액정방울의 크기는 작아졌고 포화투과도 전압은 상승했지만 rise time은 짧아 졌다.

  • We describe dried oriented films with anisotropic structural and optical properties prepared from the aqueous solutions of plank-like molecules, the so-called Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystals (LCLCs). The dried LCLC films may be used as optical elements, such as polarizers, compensators, color filters, or retardation plates in the UV, visible, or infrared parts of spectrums. The optical quality of the films is determined by the uniformity of the molecular alignment, which often distorted by periodic variations of the director field. We describe different ways to improve the alignment properties of the films by using additives. We present compositions capable of polarizing effects in visible and UV parts of spectrum.

  • 최근 기능성화장품과 피부관련 의약품 분야에서 multi-lamellar와 liquid crystal의 구조가 커다란 관심을 끌고 있다. 결합수와 고정된 유상을 함유하는 multi-lamellar 구조는 피부의 세포간지질의 lamellar 구조의 재건과 보습을 유지하는 작용으로써 보습기능이나 장벽기능의 복구에 우수하며, 이 지질들은 각질층에 침투하여 유지된다. 본 연구에서 고급 지방 알코올, 레시틴, 콜레스테롤을 사용하여 제조한 bio-mimic liquid crystal emulsion (BLCE)의 피부장벽 기능을 측정하였고 일반적인 계면활성제와 세포독성을 비교하였다.

  • Surface driven switching of the liquid crystal bulk arising from the coupling between an applied electric field and a polarized state of a nematic liquid crystal, both localized at the substrate surface, is reported. Fast switching is demonstrated in a hybrid aligned nematic cell with a fringe electric field generated by comb-like electrode structure.

Band broadening of cholesteric liquid crystal film through the various UV treatments

  • The formation of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) film reflecting a broadbanded visible spectrum by application of a liquid crystalline coating followed by UV polymerization (photo-curing) is described. Also, the formation of patterned coatings obtained by a sequence of UV exposure steps is discussed. Such coatings play an important role in the improvement of the performance of liquid crystal displays. In order to make these CLC films, we synthesized new cholesteric liquid crystal molecules (Ch-chol) containing the active reaction site to UV light and investigated to broaden the bandwidth of these cholesteric filters based on the various UV treatments.

  • In this paper, the implementation of optical parallel boolean logic gates using two Liquid Crystal TVs is described. Based on theory of polarization modulation, two Liquid Crystal TVs are arranged in tandem and parallel to perform optical logic operations. Experimental results of binary image using two Liquid Crystal TVs are presented.

  • We reported pushing of colloidal particles by a moving isotropic-nematic phase boundary. Here, we report tailoring the structure of 3-dimensional networks formed by these particles by adjusting the rate of phase transition and by application of an electric field. The resulting networks affect the electro-optic performance of liquid crystal devices.

  • We have studied the origin of coherent director rotation [CDR] as well as memory behavior in thiol-ene polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal [FLC]. The ene constituents are found to be always located at the inter-layer space and induce the coherent director rotation motion of liquid crystal molecule. On the other hand, the thiols are more intersticed between ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules at intra-layer as the thiol gets longer, and these intersticed thiols enhance the multistability and the resolution of memory state of FLCs.
