  • Various plant species, as many as 145 species in 43 families, were tested for susceptibility to the ordinary strain of the cucumber nosaic virus for two years from 1973 to 1974. Inoculations were made by mechanical method using carborundum. Plants in 71 species belonging to 27 families were infected. Of these species, systemic mosaic developed on the new leaves of plants in 57 species belonging to 24 families. Twenty-four species of plants, previously not reported as hosts of the CMV, were found to be infected in this experiment. These are Stellaria aquatica, Achyrauthes japonica, Agerratum houstonianum, Centipeda minima, Gillardia pulchella, Henisteptalyrate, Ixeris dentata, Saussurea uchiyamana, Brassica campestris, Lepidiumapetalum, Lobelia chinensis, Chenopodium bryoniaefolium, Carex neofilipes, Acalypha austalis, Amphicarpaea edgeworthii, Lotus corniculatus var japonicus, Phaseolus angularis, Sedum aizoom var heterodontum, Mosla punctulata, Perilla frutescens var japonica, Teucrium japonicum,. Linum usitatissimum, Mazus japonicus, Verbena hybrida. Twenty-three species reported to be susceptible by previous workers, but negative results were obtained in our experiment with Allium cepa, Celosia cristat, Daucus carota var. sativa, Artemisia asiatica, Callistenphus chinensis, Erigeron canadensis, Helianthusannuus, Tagetes eracta, Impatiens balsamina, Raphanus sativus, Ipomea batatas, Glycine max, Phaseolus vulgaris, Lilium longifolium, Papaver gomniferum, Sorghum vulgare, Triticum aestivum, Zea mays, Rumex coreanus, Potulaca grandiflora.

  • In this study, agronomic characteristics and fatty acid composition of 121 flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) germplasms were analyzed. The flax germplasms had a fairly short growth period of 75-95 days. The plant height at maturity varied from 52 to 124 cm. The flower color varied from white to lilac and even purple. Early flowering flax germplasms had white flowers and were resistant to lodging. In early flowering flax germplasms, all agronomic characteristics, including growth period, plant height, branch number per plant, stem diameter, number of capsules per raceme, seed number per capsule, 1000-seed weight, and seed yield, were decreased. The average fatty acid composition of 121 flax germplasms comprised palmitic acid (5.3%), stearic acid (4.3%), oleic acid (29.7%), linoleic acid (13.1%) and linolenic acid (46.4%). The total content of unsaturated fatty acids ranged from 84~94% with an average of 88%. Among the fatty acids, linolenic acid (omega-3) content was the highest with a range of 36~54%. In five selected flax germplasms (Hollandia 1803, Red son, C & F Res Br 1767, Wiera, and Ireland 1657) with high linolenic acid (${\geq}51%$), total lipid and protein contents were 30~36% and 5.4~6.9%, respectively. Overall, flax can practically be adoptable into cropping systems in South Korea and utilized as a scenery crop, since flax has a short cultivation period with diverse flower colors.

  • In order to find out the optimum seeding date of flax. this study was investigated ecological characters, yield components and yield of five varieties(Wiera, Taijungsun #$^1$, Storment Goss, CI 1763, 99403-Fiber). As seeding date was delayed, the maturing date was delayed also and stem length was longest in March 10 seeding but it grew short in the late seeding. Oil content was increased most in March 10 seeding, that is, increased to 34% in Taijungsun #$^1$, 32% in storment Goss, 30% in Wiera and 26% in 99403-Fiber, and it was decreased in the late seeding. Stem yield and seed yield were heaviest in March 10 seeding, and it was light in the late seeding, Judging from the results reported above. in optimum seeding date of flax seemed to be before the March 10.
