  • Since 4-bar linkage widely used in various industrial fields has a fixed link length, it is inconvenient to add an independent link structure or control device to change the movement of output link. Therefore, this paper proposes a new concept of variable 4-bar linkage mechanism to selectively adjust the movement of the output link to fit desired situations, and applied to the commercial table fans, which is a representative product using a 4-bar linkage system. The optimal rotation angle steps for efficiency are determined experimentally and the appropriate lengths of linkage to fit each step are calculated analytically. Changes in the linkage length are implemented by the rotational motion using a grooved cylindrical cam and the feasibility of the proposed variable linkage mechanism is verified through fabrication and measurement. The presented variable link mechanism is expected to improve the efficiency of industrial robots and fuel valve systems.

  • The modeling of 5-bar linkage robot manipulator dynamics by means of a mathematical and neural architecture is presented. Such a model is applicable to the design of a feedforward controller or adjustment of controller parameters. The inverse model consists of two parts: a mathematical part and a compensation part. In the mathematical part, the subsystems of a 5-bar linkage robot manipulator are constructed by applying Kawato's Feedback-Error-Learning method, and trained by given training data. In the compensation part, MLP backpropagation algorithm is used to compensate the unmodeled dynamics. The forward model is realized from the inverse model using the inverse of inertia matrix and the compensation torque is decoupled in the input torque of the forward model. This scheme can use tile mathematical knowledge of the robot manipulator and analogize the robot characteristics. It is shown that the model is reasonable to be used for design and initial gain tuning of a controller.

  • A small and lightweight crawling robots have been actively studied thanks to their outstanding mobility and maneuverability. Those robots can navigate into more confined spaces that larger robots are unable to reach or enter such as debris and caves. In this paper, we propose a milli-scale hexapedal robot based on planar linkage design. To make this possible, two necessary conditions for successful crawling are satisfied: thrust force from the ground and aerial phase while running. These conditions are achieved through a newly developed leg design. The robot has a pair of legs and each leg has three feet. Those feet alternatively moves based on 1DOF planar linkage. This linkage is installed at each side of the robot and finally the robot shows the alternating gait and aerial phase during running. As a result, the robot runs with the crawling speed of 0.9 m/s.

  • This study investigated and analyzed the exhibition, education, operation, and regional linkage program around a case of the National Museum of Ethnology in Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, England, and Japan to suggest necessary directions when constructing the national museum of ethnology of Korea. Interview by visiting the site and email interview were conducted for the investigation and suggestions according to the analysis are as follows. 1) It is necessary for the exhibition program to suggest a comparison exhibition by continent, and to be specific, occupation, style of living, representational culture, religion and view of the world, relation of power, and development culture are essential for the culture contents. 2) The education program needs to be constructed based on the age and level, and specific education program was suggested in this study. 3) Managing library, restaurant, cafe, and museum shop is essential for the operation program, additional service operation was suggested to cover additional financial areas, and professional research workers and professor manpower are necessary. 4) The regional linkage program needs to be composed by considering special qualities of the country and region, and needs to satisfy the expected effect of the local community and local residents.

  • The hospitals built In the seventies and eighties have gone through many different extensions and renovations. However, as there had been no prior projections of the future extensions, irrational processes in terms of interdepartmental functional relocations and space availability have recurred. As well, areas and departments are located in several wings, which bring about a decrease in interdepartmental functional linkage, causing a lot of confusion and trouble in hospital management. Through this research we acquire concluding remarks. 1) To restore functional linkage in the whole hospital, strategy of interdepartmental relocation with the clinic-in-the clinic concept is the measure to minimize the problems of the increase in interdepartmental functional linkage since the clinic-in-the clinic concepts minimize circulation and maximizes efficiency of hospital management by making all the dispersed wings as professional as possible. 2) The measure of smooth circulation in order to resolve the problems of patients' difficulty in identifying directions and in decrease in staff's work performance, which arises from the extensions without considering the traffic systems of the whole hospital involves introduction of linear circulation systems in which connections between departments or areas can be made centering main axes of circulation. It is also a responsive measure to enhance the functional linkage between buildings and efficiency of patient's ease in identification of directions.

  • In a vacuum circuit breaker mechanism, a spring-actuated linkage system is used to satisfy the desired opening and closing characteristics of electric contacts. Because the opening and the closing dynamics of electric contacts is determined by such a linkage system, the stiffness, free length and attachment points of a spring become the important design parameters. In this paper, based on the dynamic model of the circuit breaker using a multibody dynamic program ADAMS, a optimal design procedure of determining the spring design parameters is presented. The proposed procedure is applied to the design of an opening spring for satisfying the specified opening characteristics.

  • Recently, studies of integrated management platform and performance-based maintenance decision-marking systems have proceeded to the efficient management of port facilities. The purpose of this study was to manage and operate port facilities based on performance and to provide long-term durability and budgetary execution. Thus, it is essential to secure basic data to be analyzed in an integrated platform and decision-marking system. This study derived the data linkage measures to secure port facility design and management information. The target of deriving the data linkage was the POMS (Port Facility Management System) currently in operation by the MOF (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries). To derive data linkage, analyze the database of POMS and select the data required for the operation-integrated platform and decision-marking system. The final data linkage target was determined by compiling the requirements of the relevant experts and selecting the final target of three groups (port and facility information, management information, and user information). As a result, the API interface design was prepared for detailed linked data and data linkage framework between the linkage data of POMS. The provision of real-time data linkage between POMS and integrated platform is expected to improve the operational efficiency of the integrated platform.

  • An actuator should be added to a existing control linkage to make manned aircraft to unmanned. But it is quiet difficult to synchronize actuator with control surface because non-linear error necessarily occurs when four-bar linkage acts in three dimensional motion. In addition, in point of controller design view, while a real-time model needs the control surface deflection as its input, controller needs the actuator command as its output. Hence, the relation between both should be investigated. In this paper, the mathematical relation between actuator and control surface deflection investigated by kinematic analysis of a plant aircraft. The performance margin of the selected actuator also was verified.

  • This paper is concerned with the kinematic analysis of several linkage drives for mechanical presses. Load and velocity characteristics of conventional presses are illustrated and a design of new drive for a mechanical press is represented. In this regard, a crank-slider mechanism with arc crank-pin guide is introduced and compared with other linkage drives. Kinematic performances are analyzed in respect of load capacity, slide velocity characteristics using a developed SS-Plot program. The new linkage drive turns out to be effective in terms of load and velocity characteristics, and productivity.
