  • In this paper, we present hybrid ARQ techniques to improve the throughput performance in high speed packet transmission such as Internet or multimedia services. In order to evaluate the performance of the three different types of hybrid ARQ schemes, systemized link level simulations based on WWW traffic model are considered. In this paper, we also consider the simulated performance for an average link throughput and a normalized packet delay to compare the hybrid ARQ with link adaptation scheme in GPRS.

  • In this paper, we propose a QoS (Quality of Service)-aware and cooperative resource reservation scheme using cross-layer link adaptation for wireless high definition video transmission through UWB (Ultra Wide Band) network with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). A wireless high definition video transmission system usually requires stable high throughput even without line-of-sight, e.g., a destination device in another room separated by a wall. Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of DRP resource reservation conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. And the current WiMedia MAC standard has not considered QoS provisioning even though QoS parameters such as a range of service rates are provided to each traffic stream. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol with QoS-based relay node selection criterion, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP resource reservation conflicts and guarantee QoS more stably through cross-layer link adaptation of cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and QoS provisioning.

  • For the acoustic models of embedded speech recognition systems, hidden Markov models (HMMs) are usually quantized and the original full space distributions are represented by combinations of a few quantized distribution prototypes. We propose a maximum likelihood objective function to train the quantized distribution prototypes. The experimental results show that the new training algorithm and the link structure adaptation scheme for the quantized HMMs reduce the word recognition error rate by 20.0%.

  • Vehicle to Infrastructure(V2I) communication means the technology between the vehicle and the roadside unit to provide the Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) and Telematic services. The vehicle collects information about the probe data through the evolved Node B(eNodeB) and after that eNodeB provides road conditions or traffic information to the vehicle. To provide these V2I communication services, we need a link adaptation technology that enables reliable and higher transmission rate. The receiver transmits the estimated Channel State Information(CSI) to transmitter, which uses this information to enable the link adaptation. However, due to the rapid channel variation caused by vehicle speed and the processing delay between the layers, the estimated CSI quickly becomes outdated. For this reason, channel interpolation and prediction scheme are needed to achieve link adaptation in V2I communication system. We propose the Advanced Discrete Prolate Spheroidal Sequence(ADPSS) channel interpolation and prediction scheme. The proposed scheme creates an orthonomal basis, and uses a correlation matrix to interpolate and predict channel. Also, smoothing is applied to frequency domain for noise removal. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional schemes with the high speed and low speed vehicle in the freeway and urban environment.

  • An adaptive output feedback controller is designed for tracking control of an n-link robot manipulator with unknown load. High-gain observers with same structure as error dynamic systems are used to estimate joint velocities. The parameter adaptation is achieved by the smoothed projection algorithm. The control inputs are saturated outside a domain of interest. Simulation results on a 2-link manipulator illustrate that when the speed of the high-gain observer is sufficiently high, the proposed controller recovers the performance under state feedback control.

  • This paper suggests the Ethernet aggregation to XGMII framing procedure (EAXFP) mechanism to economically combine the traffic adaptation technology with the link aggregation method in designing 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) interfaces. This design sidesteps the data-loss issues that can result from designing an interface with only one link. The most critical issue in relation to the link aggregation interface is the algorithm used to control frame distribution between the ten ports. The proposed EAXFP mechanism offers an efficient link aggregation method as well as an efficient frame distribution algorithm, which maximize the throughout of the 10 GbE interface. In the experiment and analysis of the proposed mechanism, it was also discovered that the 10 GbE interface that uses the proposed EAXFP mechanism significantly reduced the packet loss rate. When there will be heavy traffic loads come about in the future, the proposed EAXFP mechanism assures an efficient and economical transmission performance on the router system.

  • In mobile network, wireless links may be overloaded due to a high concentratioJl of mobile hosts in a given cell. As a result, the required QOS(Quality of Service) cannot be provided to all flows in that cell. So, there exists adaptive applications which can operate with various bandwidth levels. When a wireless link is overloaded, it can adapt by reducing the bandwidths of flows, is referred to as rate adaptation. In this paper, we analyze the performance of existing rate adaptation methods by simulations. The result of simulation experiments shows that average-fair adaptation scheme has very low network overhead but high bandwidth variance of flows, which causes the worse quality of service. We propose a rate adaptation method refined by combining fair adaptation and average-fair adaptation, and shows the refined method can provide lower bandwidth variance of flows by simulations.

  • IEEE 802.11 WLANs provide multiple transmission rates to improve the system throughput by adapting the transmission rate to the current wireless channel conditions. Many rate adaptation schemes have been proposed because IEEE 802.11 standard does not contain any specifications for the rate adaptation scheme. In this paper, in order to overcome limitations of the previous research, we propose a new rate adaptation scheme called SARA(Sender-oriented Automatic Rate Adaptation). The SARA scheme, a proposed rate adaptation scheme, appropriately adjusts the data transmission rate based on the estimated wireless channel conditions, specifically the measured RSSI at the sender-side. Moreover it continuously updates the thresholds for selecting the transmission rate and selectively enforces the RTS/CTS exchanges to adapt the changes in the wireless channel conditions. Through the performance evaluations, we prove that the SARA scheme overcomes the limitations of the previous research and improves the wireless link utilization.

  • Opportunistic Beamforming (OBF) offers a way to provide the multiuser diversity even in slow fading channel by using randomly generated beam weights, leading to the substantially reduced feedback in the form of the instantaneous SNR from users. In spite of the advantage of the reduced feedback, the imperfect channel estimation might influence the quality of the estimated SNR and channel scheduler so bad that the selected AMC level would be higher than the achievable rate of the actual channel, resulting the corruption of transmitted packet. In this paper, we propose a conservative link adaptation, where the estimated SNR is scaled down by a conservative factor which minimizes the variance of the maximum difference between the actual channel SNR and the resultant SNR. To support the proposed scheme, we analyze the statistics of the difference of the channel SNR and the estimated SNR. Simulation results show that the introduction of conservative factor achieves more than two-fold performance improvement in the presence of channel estimation error and the fairness of PF scheduler is maintained when the least squared channel estimator is applied.

  • Mobile IPv6(MIPv6) allows a Mobile Node to talk directly to its peers while retaining the ability to move around and change the currently used IP address. One of the major issues regarding the basic Mobile IPv6 protocol is related to the handover management of a mobile node. This paper proposes efficient approach for adaptation of MIPv6 sing context information in roaming environments. To investigate on a efficient and secure handover procedure, proposed approach method will give us the following advantages: (l)the intention of context is to reduce latency, packet losses and avoid re-initiation of signaling to and from mobile nodes,(2) FMIPv6 aims to reduce handover latency due to IP protocol operations as small as possible in comparison to the inevitable link switching latency.
