A method is developed for the separation of the major base flow in a river hydrograph combining the numerical techniques and the empirical methods. The linearized Boussinesq equation and the storage function are used to obtain the base flow recession. The shape of base flow curve made by the recharge of the groundwater table aquifer resulting from rainfall in determined by the Singh and Stall's graphical method, and the continuous from for the curve is approximated by the multiple and polynomial regression. this procedure was successfully tested for the separation of base flow and the establishment of hydrograph in a natural watershed. It was found that the direct numerical method applied to the homogeneous linear second order ordinary differential equation system is not suited to obtain the recession curve, and the case that the loss is generated in the partially penetrating stream can not be solved by the method of this study.
This paper describes the design and hardware implementation of a Single Input Fuzzy Logic Controller (SIFLC) to regulate the output voltage of a boost power converter. The proposed controller is derived from the signed distance method, which reduces a multi-input conventional Fuzzy Logic Controller (CFLC) to a single input FLC. This allows the rule table to be approximated to a one-dimensional piecewise linear control surface. A MATLAB simulation demonstrated that the performance of a boost converter is identical when subjected to the SIFLC or a CFLC. However, the SIFLC requires nearly an order of magnitude less time to execute its algorithm. Therefore the former can replace the latter with no significant degradation in performance. To validate the feasibility of the SIFLC, a 50W boost converter prototype is built. The SIFLC algorithm is implemented using an Altera FPGA. It was found that the SIFLC with asymmetrical membership functions exhibits an excellent response to load and input reference changes.
In this paper, an improved Direct Power Control (DPC) algorithm is presented for grid connected three phase PWM rectifiers. The new DPC approach is based on two main tasks. First the optimization of the look-up table, which is well-known in conventional DPC, is outlined for selecting the optimum converter output voltage vectors. Secondly a very simple and effective method is used to directly calculate their duty cycles from the power errors. Therefore, the measured active and reactive powers are made to track their references using hysteresis controllers. Then two vectors are selected and applied during one control cycle to minimize both the active and reactive power ripples. The main advantages of this method are that there is no need of linear current controllers, coordinates transformations or modulators. In addition, the control strategy is able to operate at constant switching frequencies to ease the design of the power converter and the AC harmonic filter. The control exhibits a good steady state performance and improves the dynamic response without any overshoot in the line current. Theoretical principles of the proposed method are discussed. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the performance and effectiveness of this control scheme.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of normalization of the distibutions of soil parameters taken from soft ground and the reliability of the safety factors of specific objects on it, including sanitary landfill. Through this study it is found that distributions of soil parameters could be adjusted to appropriate normal distributions as possibility density functions(PDF), and that especially the group of initial cohesions and the coresponding safety factors has a perfect linear correlation. According to those results the PDF to initial cohesion as possibility parameter can not only be tmsformed to the PDF to safety factor but also, conseqently, the reliability of the safety factor(SF) simply based on the mean value of soil parameter(Co) can be calculated or easily picked up from the standrad normal distribution table. It is therefore concluded that even though calculated values of safety factors are over any standard requirements some possibility of risk both to the objects and natural soft ground could be still existing, and also a new standard value for this slope stability control system should be derived just by adjusting old one according to the magnitude of risk possibility.

A continuous solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the heat equation $u_t$=$a2u_{xx}$ using a fuzzy system is described. We first apply the Crank-Nicolson method to obtain a discrete solution at the grid points for the heat equation. Then we find a continuous function to represent approximately the discrete values at the grid points in the form of a bicubic spline function (equation omitted) that can in turn be represented exactly by a fuzzy system. We show that the computed values at non-grid points using the bicubic spline function is much smaller than the ones obtained by linear interpolations of the values at the grid points. We also show that the fuzzy rule table in the fuzzy system representation of the bicubic spline function can be viewed as a gray scale image. Hence, the fuzzy rules provide a visual representation of the functions of two variables where the contours of different levels for the function are shown in different gray scale levels
The simplification and the searching trends of complex data which assumed relationship between predictor variables and object variables are one of primary objective of ecological research. This study was aimed to apply cononical analysis consisting of canonical correlation analysis and canonical variate analysis related to lichen vegetation and several environmental variables which are elevation, height on grond, exposure side and cover values. Data collected from the Duckyoo National Park in August 1985. Lichen species was ranked by eqivocation information theory with cover values. Canonical correlation analysis was applied to one data set both set both environmental variables and lichem family. In order to make two sets of data matrix the scale of position vector ordination was calculated from the vector scalar product for lichen species. Canonical variate analysis was applied to rearranged data which was made by interval class code for environmental variables. The sharpness values was calculated in frequency of cotingency tables and the dispersion profiles of each species in classes of environmental variables was designed to extract component values based on the decomposition of expected frequencies in contingency table. The results of canonical correlation analysis revealed canonical first correlation value 0.815(89%), and second correlation value 0.083(11%). Significance test showed that the hypothesis of joint mutuallity of canonical correlation is accepted (P>0.05). The relation between canonical score of vegetation variables and that of environmental variable indicated linear tendency.

In this paper, a improved per-channel PCM Coder with 1-bit interpolation is proposed. The coder converts a telephone signal to 15-segments u-law PCM signal of a large dynamic range. The A/D conversion technique of the proposed converter requires a feedback loop around a quantizer operates at high speed, and a accumulater for accumulating the quantized values to provide PCM outputs. To obtain both linear and compressed PCM signals a improved table look-up method is presented. The operations of the proposed converter are certified through the experiments to be good. The experimental circuit comprises TTL logic gates, a resistive D/Z converter and a simple differential amplifier. From the results of the experiments, it is known that the proposed converter has many advantage to be adopted economically for per-channel onverter used in rural area service.

This paper presents a recognition performance of VOR (Vestibular-Ocular Reflex) based vision tracking system for mobile robot. The VOR is a reflex eye movement which, during head movements, produces an eye movement in the direction opposite to the head movement, thus maintaining the image of interested objects placed on the center of retina. We applied this physiological concept to the vision tracking system for high recognition performance in mobile environments. The proposed method was implemented in a vision tracking system consisting of a motion sensor module and an actuation module with vision sensor. We tested the developed system on an x/y stage and a rate table for linear motion and angular motion, respectively. The experimental results show that the recognition rates of the VOR-based method are three times more than non-VOR conventional vision system, which is mainly due to the fact that VOR-based vision tracking system has the line of sight of vision system to be fixed to the object, eventually reducing the blurring effect of images under the dynamic environment. It suggests that the VOR concept proposed in this paper can be applied efficiently to the vision tracking system for mobile robot.

In this paper, employing the 3-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) for the utilization of the temporal correlation, an adaptive motion sequence coding technique is proposed. The energy distribution in a 3-D DCT block, due to the nonstationary nature of the image data, varies along the veritical, horizontal and temporal directions. Thus, aiming an adaptive system to local variations, adaptive procedures, such as the 3-D classification, the classified linear scanning technique and the VLC table selection scheme, have been implemented in our approach. Also, a hybrid structure which adaptively combines inter-frame coding is presented, and it is found that the adaptive hybrid frame coding technique shows a significant performance gain for a moving sequence which contains a relatively small moving area. Through an intensive computer simulation, it is demonstrated that, the performance of the proposed 3-D transform coding technique shows a close relation with the temporal variation of the sequence to be code. And the proposed technique has the advantages of skipping the computationally complex motion compensation procedure and improving the performance over the 2-D motion compensated transform coding technique for rates in the range of 0.5 ~ 1.0 bpp.
A new sort of learning algorithm named whole learning algorithm is proposed to simulate the nonlinear and dynamic behavior of RC members for the estimation of structural integrity. A mathematical technique to solve the multi-objective optimization problem is applied for the learning of the feedforward neural network, which is formulated so as to minimize the Euclidean norm of the error vector defined as the difference between the outputs and the target values for all the learning data sets. The change of the outputs is approximated in the first-order with respect to the amount of weight modification of the network. The governing equation for weight modification to make the error vector null is constituted with the consideration of the approximated outputs for all the learning data sets. The solution is neatly determined by means of the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse after summarization of the governing equation into the linear simultaneous equations with a rectangular matrix of coefficients. The learning efficiency of the proposed algorithm from the viewpoint of computational cost is verified in three types of problems to learn the truth table for exclusive or, the stress-strain relationship described by the Ramberg-Osgood model and the nonlinear and dynamic behavior of RC members observed under an earthquake.
