In this article, a four-variable refined plate theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates subjected to uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Young's modulus and Poisson ratio of the FGM plates are assumed to remain constant throughout the entire plate. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the FGM plate varies according to a power law form through the thickness coordinate. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The influences of many plate parameters on buckling temperature difference such ratio of thermal expansion, aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and gradient index will be investigated.
Despite the increasing necessity of accurate estimation of ring-stiffened cylinders'ultimate strength, the complex structural behavior of cylinders has made their design mainly depend on empirical formulas mostly based on limited test data rather than theoretical background. This paper has developed the imperfection method which enables the ultimate strength analysis of buckling-sensitive structures by combining two separate functions covered by common commercial finite element softwares, which are linear elastic buckling analysis and nonlinear stress analysis. Developed method was applied to two of the world most renowned softwares, MSC/NASTRAN and ABAQUS, for the analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders and unexpectedly big difference in their analysis results was found. This tells that many widely used commercial softwares have their different strong points and weak points and the choice of commercial software should be cautiously made after thorough inspection. This paper ends with some useful information about which of the two aforementioned softwares is more respectively for the linear elastic buckling analysis and the ultimate strength analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders.
This paper discusses the elastic stability of unbraced frames under non-proportional loading based on the concept of storey-based buckling. Unlike the case of proportional loading, in which the load pattern is predefined, load patterns for non-proportional loading are unknown, and there may be various load patterns that will correspond to different critical buckling loads of the frame. The problem of determining elastic critical loads of unbraced frames under non-proportional loading is expressed as the minimization and maximization problem with subject to stability constraints and is solved by a linear programming method. The minimum and maximum loads represent the lower and upper bounds of critical loads for unbraced frames and provide realistic estimation of stability capacities of the frame under extreme load cases. The proposed approach of evaluating the stability of unbraced frames under non-proportional loading has taken into account the variability of magnitudes and patterns of loads, therefore, it is recommended for the design practice.
This paper focuses on thermal post-buckling analysis of functionally graded beams with temperature dependent physical properties by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Material properties of the beam change in the thickness direction according to a power-law function. The beam is clamped at both ends. In the case of beams with immovable ends, temperature rise causes compressible forces and therefore buckling and post-buckling phenomena occurs. It is known that post-buckling problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. Also, the material properties (Young's modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, yield stress) are temperature dependent: That is the coefficients of the governing equations are not constant in this study. This situation suggests the physical nonlinearity of the problem. Hence, the considered problem is both geometrically and physically nonlinear. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. In this study, the differences between temperature dependent and independent physical properties are investigated for functionally graded beams in detail in post-buckling case. With the effects of material gradient property and thermal load, the relationships between deflections, critical buckling temperature and maximum stresses of the beams are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.
Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) represent a high-performance family of hybrid materials which consist of thin metal sheets bonded together with alternating unidirectional fiber layers. In this study, the buckling behavior of a FML circular cylindrical shell under axial compression is investigated via both analytical and finite element approaches. The governing equations are derived based on the first-order shear deformation theory and solved by the Navier solution method. Also, the buckling load of a FML cylindrical shell is calculated using linear eigenvalue analysis in commercial finite element software, ABAQUS. Due to lack of experimental and analytical data for buckling behavior of FML cylindrical shells in the literature, the proposed model is simplified to the full-composite and full-metal cylindrical shells and buckling loads are compared with the available results. Afterwards, the effects of FML parameters such as metal volume fraction (MVF), composite fiber orientation, stacking sequence of layers and geometric parameters are studied on the buckling loads. Results show that the FML layup has the significant effect on the buckling loads of FML cylindrical shells in comparison to the full-composite and full-metal shells. Results of this paper hopefully provide a useful guideline for engineers to design an efficient and economical structure.

In the present study, the thermal buckling behavior of functionally graded sandwich plates is studied using a new hyperbolic displacement model. Unlike any other theory, the theory is variationally consistent and gives four governing equations. Number of unknown functions involved in displacement field is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. This present model takes into account the parabolic distribution of transverse shear stresses and satisfies the condition of zero shear stresses on the top and bottom surfaces without using shear correction factor. Material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of the sandwich plate faces are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. The thermal loads are assumed as uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. The results reveal that the volume fraction index, loading type and functionally graded layers thickness have significant influence on the thermal buckling of functionally graded sandwich plates.

EC3 provides several methodologies for the stability verification of members and frames. However, when dealing with the verification of non-uniform members in general, with tapered cross-section, irregular distribution of restraints, non-linear axis, castellated, etc., several difficulties are noted. Because there are yet no guidelines to overcome any of these issues, safety verification is conservative. In recent research from the authors of this paper, an Ayrton-Perry based procedure was proposed for the flexural buckling verification of web-tapered columns. However, in order to apply this procedure, Linear Buckling Analysis (LBA) of the tapered column must be performed for determination of the critical load. Because tapered members should lead to efficient structural solutions, it is therefore of major importance to provide simple and accurate formula for determination of the critical axial force of tapered columns. In this paper, firstly, the fourth order differential equation for non-uniform columns is derived. For the particular case of simply supported web-tapered columns subject to in-plane buckling, the Rayleigh-Ritz method is applied. Finally, and followed by a numerical parametric study, a formula for determination of the critical axial force of simply supported linearly web-tapered columns buckling in plane is proposed leading to differences up to 8% relatively to the LBA model.

Large amplitude free vibration and thermal post-buckling of shear flexible Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beams is studied using finite element formulation based on first order Timoshenko beam theory. Classical boundary conditions are considered. The ends are assumed to be axially immovable. The von-Karman type strain-displacement relations are used to account for geometric non-linearity. For all the boundary conditions considered, hardening type of non-linearity is observed. For large amplitude vibration of FGM beams, a comprehensive study has been carried out with various lengths to height ratios, maximum lateral amplitude to radius of gyration ratios, volume fraction exponents and boundary conditions. It is observed that, for FGM beams, the non-linear frequencies are dependent on the sign of the vibration amplitudes. For thermal post-buckling of FGM beams, the effect of shear flexibility on the structural response is discussed in detail for different volume fraction exponents, length to height ratios and boundary conditions. The effect of shear flexibility is observed to be predominant for clamped beam as compared to simply supported beam.
Two-element plate concept is incorporated into the buckling problem in order to simplify the nonlinear distribution of stress through the thickness of plate. Finite element formulations and programs based upon the Reissner functional and the modified Reissner functional using two-element plate concept are developed for buckling analysis of plates under axial compression. The two programs have been applied to obtain the linear elastic buckling behavior of axially compressed flat plates. Excellent agreement of linear elastic-solution results with exact or approximate solutions of other authors for the same boundary conditions proves the validity of the finite element method using two-element plate theory.

The requirement of design of High-Pressure/High-Temperature(HP/HT) pipelines on an seabed increases in recent years. The need of research on the analysis method to improve the design capacity is increasing. The purpose of this study is the development of the analysis method of thermal buckling of subsea pipeline structures. The analysis method of thermal buckling was established by using the commercial FEM code(ABAQUS) which shows the outstanding performance in non-linear static FE analysis. The developed method has been applied to the installation of subsea pipeline on the offshore project. For a validation, the comparative study has been carried out. This application to offshore project demonstrates the superiority of the analysis method of thermal buckling of subsea pipeline structures and testifies the application to detail design.
