The effect of parent rocks to the soil microbial diversity were investigated in soils developed from granite, limestone and basalt parent rocks. In the soils, microbial populations were positively related to the soil chemicals, such as soil pH with ftuorescent Pseudomonas, and soil EC with actinomycetes, fungi, mesophilic Bacillus and alkaliphilic bacteria. Gram negative bacteria, spore forming Bacillus, were maintained relatively same levels of population between granite, limestone and basalt soils. Among the species of Burkholderia, Pseudomonas and Ralstonia were dominated in the granite soils, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia and Phyllobacterium in the limestone soils, and Burkholderia in the basalt soils.
Preparation and evaluation of the limestone samples for a proficiency test using domestic limestone have been performed. We have used statistical method for evaluation of the XRF and instrumental analysis results. We have found that there were some outliers from XRF and ICP-OES instrumental analysis results for each sample. After removal of 5 outliers among the 50 samples we could obtain the homogeneous samples which have within a reliability of 95% from a statistical analysis result.

This study investigates the effect of nano-silica and nano-calcite on the hydration properties and mechanical performance of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) paste. The pastes were synthesized by replacing limestone with nano-silica and nano-calcite in order to enhance the mechanical properties in both early and late stages of hydration. The nano-calcite enhanced the strength of LC3 pastes at 1 day of hydration, however, the strength decreased compared to the ordinary LC3 pastes afterwards due to excessive amount of carboaluminate produced in the pastes. On the other hand, nano-silica improved the mechanical properties of LC3 pastes at all ages of hydration. This is mainly due to the nucleation effect and pozzolanic reaction of nano-silica, affecting the early age and late ages of hydration, respectively. The nucleation effect of both nanomaterials were confirmed by the analysis of hydration heat, supporting the enhanced early age strength of nanomaterial incorporated LC3 pastes. Furthermore, the dense matrix was shown in the pore size distribution, and the increased C-S-H due to the pozzolanic reaction evidence the improved compressive and splitting tensile strength of nano-silica incorporated LC3 pastes.
This paper reviews Professor O.J. Kim's work on "The stratigraphy and geologic structure of the Great Limestone Series in South Korea". Although he stated in his paper such as "very few geologists in Korea argue without confident evidences against the age and stratigraphy of the Great Limestone Series which have been rather well established previously in most parts of the regions", he disregarded the Jeongseon type of the Joseon (Chosen) System and modified the Yeongweol and the Pyeongchang types. According to his description, the Jeongseon type is not a different type and it is only due to structural repetition of the Hwajeol and Dumudong Formations of the Duwibong type and its Maggol Limestone. Also, he devided the Sambangsan Formation of the Yeongweol type into the east and west parts along the so-called Jeolgaesan fault, and they are correlated to the Hongjeom Series and Sesong Slate (Seison Slate) of Kobayashi, respectively. Furthermore he established newly Yeongweol type which includes the original Kobayashi's Yeongweol type and the Upper Limestone of the Pyeongchang type. Also, he pointed out that his newly established Yeongweol type is quite correlatable to the Duwibong type. The writer's opinion can be concluded that the Jeongseon type is not simply of structural repetition and structurely the Sambangsan Formation can not be devided into two parts. Also structurely there is no evidence of its correlation to the Sesong Slate as well as his conodont study in his Yeongweol type shows no indication of the correlation. The writer thinks that as to the stratigraphy of the Yeongweol and Jeongseon types of the Joseon System, it should be agreed with the Kobayashi's opinion or should be followed the idea of the very few geologists, he mentioned.
pH buffer capacities (pHBC, $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$) of 6 residual Entisols derived from granite, granite-gneiss, limestone, sandstone, shale, and basalt in Korea were studied. Soil acidity may become a problem if the soil pH is reduced to critical levels when nutrient cycles are unbalanced (especially N, C and S). The relation between the pHBC and the physico-chemical properties of the 6 soils was also studied. In the A horizons of all the soils except Euiseong series developed from sandstone, the contents of clay, organic matter and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were higher than those of C horizon, but bulk density and pH were lower than C horizon. Clay content of Euiseong series decreased with soil depth, which might be caused by the elluviation. The soils developed from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone have a higher $SiO_2$ content than those developed from basalt and limestone. The contents of $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO were high in the soils from developed from basalt, limestone and shale comparing with the soils from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone. The soils from basalt and limestone showed higher values of ignition loss than those from the other parent rocks. The pHBC of the soils was ranged from 1.8 to 3.2 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$ showing as follows : basalt, limestone > shale, granite-gneiss > granite sandstone.
Physical and microstructural properties of Pungchon and Maggol limestone were investigated quantitatively during 50 cycles of artificial freezing and thawing test. There were decrease in dry weight and P,S-wave velocity, and increase in absorption rate in both rock types. Porosity, pore volume, equivalent diameter, throat thickness and pore orientation were analyzed using X-ray computed tomography images. Porosity increased, and initiation and expansion of pores were investigated as weathering progresses. Physical and microstructural variation in Maggol limestone was larger than that of Pungchon limestone because Maggol limestone has more pores and microcracks at initial state. As this study analyzes physical and microstructural properties of rock specimens comprehensively, it can be applied to further rock weathering study and can be used as fundamental data of construction and resource development in cold regions.
Considering the applicability of Kuz-Ram model, which has been used extensively for predicting rock fragmentation size distribution by blasting, to domestic open-pit limestone mine, a total of 21 blasting tests have been executed at an open-pit limestone mine in eastern Gangwon of South Korea. A comparative analysis of field measured value and Kuz-Ram predicted value showed that there are a considerable amount of error in the predicted values regardless of application of various correction parameters for rock factor and uniformity factor; up to 56.45% in mean fragmentation size and 37.52% in uniformity index. Also the problem of applying different correction parameters has been derived even though a similar blasting pattern has been adopted for a same blasting bench. The authors therefore suggest that Kuz-Ram model needs to be modified for a proper application to domestic open-pit limestone mine.

This process which has a connection of biofilter and sulfur-limestone has been developed to treat organic substances including BOD, COD and SS etc. and to treat sulfur-limestone is for denitrification.. The whole process consists of chemical reaction tank, sedimentation tank, trickling filter, denitrification tank The trickling filter is equipped with a reactor filled with absorptive filter, and the sulfur denitrification tank is filled with sulfur-limestone mixed media. After setting up practical facilities whose capacity is 60 tons a day, we have observed the removal efficiencies of pollutants through 60 experiments during Summer and Winter seasons. The average concentration of polluted water was BOD for 3.6 mg/L, $COD_{Mn}$ for 11.3 mg/L, SS for 2.8 mg/L, T-N for 8.6 mg/L, and T-P for 0.8 mg/L, and the rate of treatment efficiencies 96.5%, 84.7%, 96.5%, 79.2%, and 80.8%, respectively was found through the experiments. The average treatment efficiency for BOD and $COD_{Mn}$ was 85.0% and 55.7%, respectively and the average removal efficiency for NH4+-N was 84.9% in the trickling filter. The removal efficiency in the denitrification tank is as follows; The removal rate of $NO_3^--N$ was as high as 93.2% within the compass of pH 6.3 to 7.3 through $16.8{\sim}37.0mg/L$ flown into $NO_3^--N$ and $0.1{\sim}8.3mg/L$ outflown. It had observed that this process has implemented highly efficient and advanced treatment without external carbon sources and internal recycle during its process. In conclusion, this process is suitable for a sewerage in a small village due to the merits of low power consumption and easy maintenance.
Ground subsidence occurring in mine area can cause an enormous damage of loss of lives and properties, and a systematic survey should be conducted a series of field investigation and ground stability analysis in subsidence area. This study describes the results from field investigation and ground stability analysis in a limestone mine located in Cheongwon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. Rock mechanical measurements and electrical resistivity surveys are applied to obtain the characteristics of in-situ rock masses and the distribution patterns of subsurface weak zone, and their results are extrapolated in numerical analysis. From the field investigation and stability analysis, it is concluded that the subsidence occurrence in this limestone mine is caused mainly by subsurface limestone cavities.

Demand for limestone production from both the underground and opencast mines in Korea is gradually increasing. Increase in productivity with safe mining operations is the emphasis laid on the mining industry. KIGAM has undertaken a detailed investigation to apply RMR and Q classification system for the design of underground limestone mining operations. The field investigations were confined to the underground mines of Daesung Mining Development Co. Ltd. and Pyunghae Mines of Korean Airport Service. Modification to the standard RMR and Q for limestone mines in Korea along with the correlation between these two systems are discussed while attempts were also made to calculate the width of a safe unsupported span.
