  • To study the basic research of the lightning parameter for power system operation. LPATS(Lightning Position and Tracking System) has been introduced since 1995 in KEPCO. We have developed the lightning parameter analysis program. We obtained the various statistical distribution of lightning current parameters from 1995 by this program. In this paper, we describe LPATS system configuration. the algorithm of the program and the statistical distribution of lightning current parameters from 1996 to 1997.

  • This paper dealt with the performance evaluation and the diagnostic techniques of lightning arresters for DC electric traction vehicle. Field Measurements on the protective operation of lightning arresters against surge currents were carried out on running vehicles to acquire the data necessary for the diagnosis. The frequency and the magnitude of surge events were analyzed. Surge currents of $1\sim3$ times were recorded in one running service route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A\sim2kA$. Also, an acceleration experiment on a lightning arrester by the standard lightning impulse current of 8/20 us and 5 kA was performed to know the aging characteristics. After the surge current application of 3,000 times, the reference voltage decreased by 4.5 %, and the leakage current was below 10 uA at the continuous operating voltage and about 50 uA at the rated voltage. From the experimental results, we propose a decision level of leakage current for the arrester used in this paper and designed an arrester tester which analyzes arrester condition by the magnitude of leakage current.

  • This paper describes the comparison results on electrical characteristic changes of ZnO blocks by lightning impulse current. The five types of ZnO blocks used in lightning arrester for distribution lines have been estimated repeatedly till about 400 times by a standard lightning impulse current of 3kA, $8/20{\mu}s$, and changes of the performance characteristics of them to operation times were examined and compared quantitatively every fifty times discharge. It is expected that the result will be useful to diagnose the soundness of ZnO blocks or lightning arresters, and to develope deterioration diagnosis device for them.

  • After flashover occurs on the overhead distribution line by lighting strokes(direct or induced), the power frequency arc current continues. If lightning flashover occurs on the overhead lines using covered conductors, the power frequency art current with fixed path overheats the conductor, and arc fusion fault can be occurred. There are two categories protecting or reducing methods of arc fusion faults caused by lightning stokes. - Reducing lightning flashover rate : G/W, LA, etc. - Protection by AFPD(Arc Fusion Protection Device) : power follow current interruption. This paper presents lightning surge phenomena on overhead distribution lines and protecting performance of arc fusion Protection devices to the lightning strokes nearby overhead line.

  • As the overhead transmission lines are exposed to the outdoor weather, the causes of the transmission lines faults are from natural conditions, and among these faults, the outage rate due to lightning is more than 60%. The lightning causes the damage of power system equipments, the shut down of electricity and the electro-magnetic interference. Therefore, the pertinent insulation design is important, not only to decrease the damage of the facility itself but also to increase the reliability of electric power system. For these reasons, we have to obtain and accumulate the lightning current parameters for the basic lightning research. This paper describes the statistical distribution of lightning current parameters and the IKL map.

  • This paper deals with the lightning effects on aircraft. The effects are divided into two groups. The one is the direct effect due to the direct attachment of the lightning channel and/or conduction of lightning current. The other is the indirect effect like electrical transients induced by lightning in aircraft conductive components such as electric circuits.   • This paper describes the effect of lightning impulse current on deterioration of ZnO blocks for distribution arrester. In this study. a multiple-lightning impulse current generator which can produce quadruple 8/20 ${\mu}s$ 5 kA is designed and fabricated, and total energy applied to the arrester block at each pulse is about 1,217 J. The experimental results indicate that the type of arresters are more vulnerable to deteriorate or damage at multiple-lightning impulse current.

  • This paper presents a new accelerating aging test facility for distribution lightning arresters. Aging parameters of lightning arrester are moisture ingress, electrical stress and surge absorption and so on. In this system, we applied 13.2kV to 6 samples and controled temperature and humidity of chamber and measured leakage currents of the all samples. Also we developed accelerating aging cycle which consists of -35$^{\circ}C$∼90$^{\circ}C$ temperature and 40%∼90% humidity. Through the aging test we found out the leakage current of aged sample increases rapidly according to the temperature rising. Hereafter we can determine the replacement guide of leakage current for field operating arresters and condition assessment of aged samples through this aging test.

  • Every 3000 hour an aircraft is stricken by a lightning. Also the lightning damage to the aircraft during flight are continually occurred due to extreme weather phenomena such as global warming. Under the airworthiness standards, the aircraft must be designed to protect lightning. To show compliance for lightning, the test should be conducted by the actual lightning current and voltage waveform for the actual aircraft or parts. After test, structure damage is detected via visual inspection or NDI. Structure substantiation for damage is to show retaining limit or near limit load capability. This is conducted by test or analysis based on test. Thus, the aircraft should retain structural strength to land safely, even though the damage of aircraft fuselage from Lightning strike are occurred.
