The purpose of this study was to develop inquiry modules for learning straight propagation of light, to verify their efficiency, and to acquire implications. this study proposes teaching modules for improvements of light experiments, which were developed in this work. Inquiry modules were applied to 75 school teachers(8 elementary school teachers, 67 middle school and high school teachers) for examining that the modules make teachers have the scientific concepts. Then, conception changes were analyzed except 5 teachers who responded poorly. The pre-test result shows that most teachers have alternative conceptions, which is that they thought the bright shape on apparatus's bottom panel itself shown in the textbook as evidence for the path of light's straight propagation. The post-test result shows this alternative conception was changed into scientific conception. Unlikely pretest, most teachers' conception was changed into the scientific conception that the light come from a light source. Teachers are able to express that the light beam comes from a miniature electric bulb. Further more, most teachers can draw light's path correctly; from the miniature electric bulb, through vertical panel having a hole, to the apparatus bottom.
We present an efficient design approach for a plasmonic slot waveguide using a genetic algorithm. The analyzed structure consists of a nanometric slot in a thin metallic film embedded within a dielectric. To achieve high confinement without long propagation length, the thickness and width of the slot are optimally designed in order to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The optimized design is based on the finite element method and enhances the guiding and focusing of light power propagation.
We investigate transmission of light in nanoscale structures. We present spatial and temporal domain measurements of the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metal films with periodic nano-hole arrays. By probing coherent spatial SP propagation lengths of a few f1. $\mu$m and an ultrafast decay of the SP polarization on a 10 fs timescale, we demonstrate that the SP transmission peaks are homogeneously broadened by the SP radiative lifetime. The pronounced wavelength and hole size dependence of the dephasing rate shows that the microscopic origin of the conversion of SP into light is a Rayleigh-like scattering by the periodic hole array. We have experimentally studied the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metallic nano-hole arrays. By relating nanoscopic SP propagation, ultrafast light transmission and optical spectra, we demonstrate that the transmission spectra of these plasmonic bandgap structures are homogeneously broadened. The spectral line shape and dephasing time are dominated by Rayleigh scattering of SP into light and can varied over a wide range by controlling the resonance energy and/or hole radius. This opens the way towards designing SP nano-optic devices and spatially and spectrally tailoring light -matter interactions on nanometer length scales.

Background: Epilobium hirsutum L. is designated as an endangered plant in South Korea located in Asia, due to the destruction of its habitats through the development of wetlands. Therefore, in this study, in order to find a light condition suitable for the growth and ecophysiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., those of this plant under treatment with various light qualities in a smart farm were measured. Results: In order to examine the changes in the physiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. according to the light qualities, the treatment with light qualities of the smart farm was carried out using the red light: blue light irradiation time ratios of 1:1, 1:1/2, and 1:1/5 and a red light: blue light: white light irradiation time ratio of 1:1:1. As a result, the ecophysiological responses (difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature, transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 partial pressure, photosynthetic quantum efficiency) to light qualities appeared differently according to the treatments with light qualities. The increase in the blue light ratio increased the difference between the leaf temperature and the atmospheric temperature and the photosynthetic quantum efficiency and decreased the transpiration rate and the intercellular CO2 partial pressure. On the other hand, the white light treatment increased the transpiration rate and intercellular CO2 partial pressure and decreased the temperature difference between the leaf temperature and the ambient temperature and photosynthetic quantum efficiency. Conclusions: The light condition suitable for the propagation by the stolons, which are the propagules of Epilobium hirsutum L., in the smart farm, is red, blue and white mixed light with high net photosynthetic rates and low difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature.
In this paper, we propose a hydrodynamic scene separation method for wave propagation from video imagery using autoencoder. In the coastal area, image analysis methods such as particle tracking and optical flow with video imagery are usually applied to measure ocean waves owing to some difficulties of direct wave observation using sensors. However, external factors such as ambient light and weather conditions considerably hamper accurate wave analysis in coastal video imagery. The proposed method extracts hydrodynamic scenes by separating only the wave motions through minimizing the effect of ambient light during wave propagation. We have visually confirmed that the separation of hydrodynamic scenes is reasonably well extracted from the ambient light and backgrounds in the two videos datasets acquired from real beach and wave flume experiments. In addition, the latent representation of the original video imagery obtained through the latent representation learning by the variational autoencoder was dominantly determined by ambient light and backgrounds, while the hydrodynamic scenes of wave propagation independently expressed well regardless of the external factors.
Light signals in the form of intensity gradient, propagation direction, and wavelength elicit diverse mechanical responses ("photomechanical responese") in most organisms. The single cell ciliates, Stentor coeruleus and Blepharisma japonicum, are particularly sensitive to the light of visible wavelengths. In this paper, the way in which the seemingly sophisticated light signal transduction is triggered by the photosensory apparatus will be described in terms of the photoreceptor structure and photochemical function.
We present 2D slab silicon-based photonic crystal optical insulator to enhance light emission efficiency of light-emitting diode (LED). A 2D slab silicon photonic crystal is designed in such a way that light emitting diode die can be placed in the middle of the silicon photonic crystal. The device creates light propagation forbidden region in horizontal plane for Transverse Electric (TE) light with the wavelength range of 450 nm to 600 nm.
A theoretical presentation of evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with the perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The behavior of the distributed couple. is examined using a coupled mode model, which takes account of the two dimensions of the waveguide configuration. The coupling and propagation of light were found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of each structure and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of the PWGCC is described in terms of a simple geometrical interpretation of the synchronization condition that is in agreement with a previous investigation of the problem based on the coupled-mode theory (CMT). The power of the light propagation in the fiber decreased exponentially along the fiber axis as it was transferred to the PWGCC, where it was carried away.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of monochromic light-emitting diode (LED) light with different color on the growth and reproductive performances of white Roman breeder geese. A randomized complete batch design was utilized for the trial, and the replicate was regarded as one batch. Twenty ganders and fifty-five dames were used in batch 1 (started on 2011/6/17 and ended on 2012/1/31), thirty ganders and eighty-four dames were used in batch 2 (started on 2012/3/23 and ended on 2012/10/26), and thirty ganders and seventy-two dames were used in batch 3 (started on 2013/3/12 and ended on 2013/12/20). Two hundred and ninety-one geese were randomly assigned to 6 rooms in an environmentally controlled house. They were randomly allotted into one of three monochromatic light treatments: Blue, red, or white. The results showed that there was no significant difference in body weight among the three lighting groups at any point throughout the experimental period. However, compared to the blue light group, significantly more eggs were produced by the red and white light groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, the laying period of the red light group was significantly longer than that of other two groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, our results suggested that red LED-light has the best effect on reproductive performance (i.e. longer laying period and higher total eggs number) at 30 lux light intensity, and is therefore a better choice for the management of breeding geese than blue or white LED-light.
A theoretical presentation by using a three-dimensional finite difference beam propagating method (3-D FD-BPM) for the evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with a perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The coupling and propagation of light are found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of two structures and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of a PWGCC is presented with the distribution of electric fields in xy - plane and the absolute amplitude of electric fields along the x and y axis. The power of the light propagation in a fiber decreases exponentially along the fiber axis as it is transferred to the PWGCC, where it is carried away.
