  • The arc sensor has been most widely used for weld seam tracking through welding current or voltage variation. In this work, the relation between the arc light intensity and welding condition is investigated using heat balance in the Plasma for its possible application to seam tracking in the GMAW process. The arc light intensity is derived to be the function of the arc length and welding current Experiments are carried out to verify the proposed heat balance model. Performances of least square and integration methods to process the signals for seam tracking are compared experimentally. Predicted arc light intensity shows reasonably good agreement with experimental results. The weld seam is successfully tracked through the arc light intensity. The least square and integration methods demonstrate almost same performance of seam tracking with $CO_2$gas shielding.

  • Light scattering measurement system that can evaluate light scattering characteristic from defects on silicon wafer surface has been developed. The system uses $Ar^+$ laser as an illumination source, and a highly sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) for detecting scattered light from defects. Unlike with conventional measurement system, our system has ability to measure scattered light pattern from wide range of scattering angles with changeable incidence condition. It is shown that our developed system is effective to discriminate the types and sizes of defects from basic experimental results using a microscatch and a PSL sphere.

  • Light guide plate is one of most important components which are composed of back light unit, affecting the quality and performance of LCD. Average brightness and uniformity are especially key factors for designing the light guide unit. These qualities are affected and controlled by the pattern being attached to the back of light guide unit. In order to obtain high brightness and uniformity the optimized pattern design is adopted for LGP. In this study, optimized molding condition for LGP with 0.4 mm thickness was obtained by using the Moldflow simulation software and the optimized pattern for better brightness uniformity was designed for the thickness of the 0.4 mm by trial and error method. The brightness was measured for the different LGP thicknesses and the residual stress analysis was performed for 0.4 mmthickness by the photoelasticity and the results are compared with 0.5 mm, 0.6 mm thickness.

  • This study was conducted to investigate visual threshold of nigro (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) on white LED light. The visual threshold was obtained by analyzing electrocardiogram (ECG) of the nigro. 5 individuals (body weight: 15.62~45.49 g; TL: 8.9~12.4 cm) were trained for lights by an electric stimulus. And then the heart rate (beats/10s) before and after switching on the light were compared. Light intensity range was from 0.00 to 226.4 lux. Average heart rate was 10.36 beats/10s in the normal condition. When the fish perceived the light, the heart rate was decreased. Visual threshold of the fish was 2.59 lux.

  • Production of camptothecin ((PT) from callus cultures of Camptotheca acuminata Decne was affected by light and culture conditions. Among the culture media tested, modified B5 medium containing 3% (w/v) sucrose, 2 mg/L B,4-D, 2 times of MS medium vitamins, 500 mg/L casein hydrolysate, 250 mg/L myo-inositol, 0.05% (w/v) activated charcoal, and 0.15% (w/v) gelite was used for callus induction . The highest cell growth and CPT production were obtained in dark and green light condition, respectively. Photoperiod has no effect on cell growth and CPT production. Both cell growth and CPT production were also influenced by combination ratio of red and blue light .Cell growth and CPT production were the highest in the ratio of red and blue light,90:10.

  • This paper presents a simple method for measurenemt of roughness of ground surfaces. The present method utilizes fluxes of scattered lights condensed through lenses aligned along the specular direction. A theoretical analysis is preformed for the purpose of investigating the possibility of the method as well as determining the experimental condition. Experiments are also performed to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. The theoretical and experimental results show that the proposed method is simple enouth to implement and has a potential to identify a wide range of roughness of ground surfaces.

  • The effects of light and storage conditions on the germination of Oenothera lamarckiana were investigated. Germination was induced by red light, but inhibited by green, blue or infrared. No germination occurred in the dark. Radicle was more photosensitive than other parts of the seed. The rate of germination was proportional to increase in Light intensity ranging from 10 to 3000 Lux. Photosensitivity occurred 6 hrs after water imbibition of air-dried seeds. Maximum photosensitivity was detected 1-2 days after seeding under the light condition at 300 Lux. Germination was almost completed 3 days after seeding. When seeds stored in the chilling and wetting condition were kept at constant temperature in the dark, they germinated well. Air-dried seeds, however, didn't germinate. Whereas, the seeds which kept at alternating temperature had the tendency that seeds stored at room temperature (25$^{\circ}C$) germinated better than those stored at low temperature (4$^{\circ}C$).

  • In this study, fuel qualities including kinematic viscosity and pour point in the various temperature, calorific value and combustion characteristics of two biodiesels based on the soybean and waste oil blended with light oil were investigated and discussed in order to figure out to confirm fuel compatibility taking the place of light oil in the hot air heater or boiler. As biodiesel content ratio increased calorific value of biodiesel decreased, and the difference was 13% between 100%-biodiesel and light oil. In general, pour points of the biodiesels were higher than light oil, and as biodiesel content ratio increased pour point increased. About 15 cSt was the pour point of biodiesels and light oil, which occurred at 3 to $4^{\circ}C$ in the biodiesels and $-25^{\circ}C$ in the light oil. Flame dimensions of biodiesels and light oil were almost same at the same combustion condition in the burner of the hot air heater. CO concentrations in the exhaustion gas were far lower than those of the light oil. Though pour point of biodiesel is a little inferior to light oil, still biodiesel can be an alternative fuel substituting for light oil in combustion system without much modifying the current oil combustion mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine optimum condition of Pavlova lutheri and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Detailed studies were carried out on the effects of various wavelengths of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), light intensities and air flow rations. For the Pa. lutheri, cell growth rates and maximum cell concentrations were similar regardless of wavelengths and air flow rates. Among the different light intensities, cell concentration increased when light intensity of red LED increased. For Ph. tricornutum, red LED was found to be the most effective light source, and light intensity of 3,100 Lux resulted in the most effective for the cultivation of Ph. tricornutum. Different air flow rates were tested to overcome shading effects due to denser cell concentration in the solution. Aeration of 0.8 vvm was determined to be the optimum aeration rate for the cultivation of Ph. tricornutum. Especially, five and two times greater cell concentrations of Pa. lutheri and Ph. tricornutum, respectively, were observed when air was applied.
