  • A light guide panel (LGP) is an element of the LCD back light unit, which is used for display devices. In this study, the laser marking process is applied to the fabrication of light guide panels as the new fabrication process. In order to obtain a light guide panel which has high luminance and uniformity, four principal parameters such as power, scanning speed, ratio of line gap, and number of line were selected. A Web-based design tool was developed to generate patterns of light guide panel at any location, and the tool may assist the designer to develop optimized patterns. Topcon-BM7 was used for luminance measurement of each specimen with $100mm{\times}100mm$ area. By Taguchi method optimized levels of each parameters were found, and luminance of $3523cd/cm^2$ and uniformity of 92% were achieved using the laser machined BLU.

  • In this paper, in order to get micro or nano size optical patterns, an analytical and experimental investigation on a LGP (light guide plate) injection molding process has performed. The LGP, which diffusing and emitting the light from the CCFL or the LEDs to the panel front direction uniformly, typically has an under 1mm thick base substrate and numerous 60 to $170{\mu}m$ width and 6 to $10{\mu}m$ thick dot patterns on it. Generally, the small size LGPs, for mobile devices, have been and are being made of PMMA through the injection molding process. However, the substrate thickness and the dot pattern size are decreasing, it becomes hard to fill the micro to sub-micro cavities completely. To investigate the flow behavior of resin in micro/nano cavities and identify the characteristics of the LGP injection molding process, we carried out the flow analyses with respect to the variations of the substrate thickness, the dot pattern size and the pitch of a cavity.

  • The LGP(Light Guide Panel) for the back light unit that is used to the 2.2" TFT LCD was designed and fabricated. The method of the pattern design which is the most important in the design of the LGP was converted the V-cutting method into the Dot method. This newly developed Dot method provided a good uniformity in the brightness at the LGP, which was a very difficult problem to solove in the V-cutting method. The experiment result of the newly designed LGP shows the brightness uniformity 90% and the brightness 3656 $cd/\;m^2$ which is 20% higher than the commercial products.

  • This paper deals with the development of a shape inspection system of the Light Guide Panel(LGP), and the study for the performance of the system. The conventional contact sensing methods have been used to inspect the shape. However the contact-sensing methods have some problems. The contact between a tip of the sensor and the surface of objects make a sensor tip abraded and generate a defect on the surface of objects. In this paper, we employed the Non-Contact Optical Sensor[1] to measure the shape inspection system of LGPs, The Sensor composed of Hologram laser[3] unit used for CD Optical Pickup[2] is low cost and has a good performance to measure a transparent objects. From the results of experiments for LGP shape inspection ...

  • In this paper, it was attempted to analyze the optimal design of light emitting diode (LED), a source of back light unit (BLU). LED is beginning with commercialized red LED which is made by GaAsP compound semiconductor, and has been developed focusing on liquid crystal panel. In order to get the optimal design, optical simulation was made by analyzing luminosity shape, reflector angle, chip depth, and chip position of LED lighting. Final results show that the proposed LED characteristics were useful to increase light efficiency and it has been proven by distribution chart for actual exposed light on the light guide panel (LGP).

  • Powder blasting technique was introduced to micromachine the micro patterns of circular and rectangular shape in LGP mould. The machinability of these patterns and matt treatment by powder blasting were verified. Then a prototype of LGP was injected by the developed LGP mould with micro patterns. Shape analysis of micro patterns and performance test of the injected LGP were carried out. The results showed printless LGP with micro patterns could be produced by just single injection using the mould with micro patterns, and powder blasting technique could be successfully applied to micrornachining of micro patterns and matt treatment of LGP mould.

  • Recently, trends of TFT-LCD toward larger scale and thinner thickness continue. so, demands of Light Guide Panel (LGP) which is to substitute for prism sheet are appeared. Functions of LGP obtaining polarization of light of the prism sheet as well as the incidence and reflection of light are demanded. This prism type LGP to complete functions of the existing LGP and polarization at once must be supported by micro machining technology of LGP surface. In this research, the machining characteristics of the various materials were analysed by shaping using V-shaped single crystal diamond tool. The characteristics are machined surface, machining force due to the variation of cutting depth. Used specimens are engineering materials, which are 6:4 brass, oxygen-free copper, Al6061, PC, PMMA. The FFT analysis of the measured cutting force was conducted. The cutting characteristics were analyzed and the optimum cutting conditions with materials were established.

  • LGP(Light-Guide Panel) of LCD backlight is one of the major componets which affect on the product quality of LCD. The optical relation between brightness and pattern has been investigated for LGP with the uniform distribution of brightness. When given the brightness distribution as target, the solutions of pattern distribution is not unique. Each solution of pattern designs shows the different brightness intensity even though they have the same brightness distribution with target's one. The manufacturing condition of pattern has an influence on the possibly-maximum-brightness intensity among the solutions of pattern design. The present study has examined the effects of LGP thickness, pattern shape errors, and reflection film on the optical characteristics of LGP.

  • PMMA (Polymethyle-methacrylate) optical components have recently been increasingly used as one of the important part of the high precision equipments. This research presents comparatively the surface preparation of light incident plane, LIP (Light Incident Plane) of LGP (Light Guide Panel) by end milling, high speed shaping, and vibration assisted high speed shaping. From several experiments, the results show that the surface quality was improved in high speed shaping and the vibration assisted HSS show not only decreasing waviness and breakage also raising the straightness property. For applying high speed shaping and vibration assisted HSS, an additional tool post was developed and experimentally used.
