The chemical modification of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is an emerging area in material science. In the present study, hydroxyl functionalized oxovanadium(IV) Schiff-base; N,N'-bis(4-hydroxysalicylidene)-ethylene-1, 2-diamineoxovanadium(IV), [VO($(OH)_2$-salen)]; has been covalently anchored on modified MWNTs. The new modified MWNTs ([VO($(OH)_2$-salen)]-MWNTs]) have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), UV-Vis, Diffuse reflectance (DRS), FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The analytical data indicated a composition corresponding to the mononuclear complex of tetradentate Schiff-base ligand. The characterization of the data showed the absence of extraneous complex, retention of MWNTs and covalently anchored on modified MWNTs. Liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane with $H_2O_2$ to a mixture of cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane-1,2-diol in $CH_3$CN have been reported using oxovanadium(IV) Schiff-base complex covalently anchored on modified MWNTs as catalysts. This catalyst is more selective toward cyclohexanol formation.
The tetradentate schiff base, N,N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-ethylene diimine has been reacted with a series of Mo(IV), Mo(V), Mo(IV), and Mo(III) oxidation states to form new Complexes; $[MoO_2(C_{16}H_{14}O_2N_2)], (MoO(C_{16}H_{14}O_2N_2)]_2O, (Mo(SCN)(C_{16}H_{14}O_2N_2)]_2O, and (Mo(H_2O)(C_{16}H_{14}O_2N_2)]_2O.$ These complexes have hexa coordinated configurations and the mole ratio of these ions to the ligand was 1:1. These complexes have been identified by visible spectra, infrared specra, T.G.A., D.T.A., and elemental analysis.
The inertness of eight-coordinate tetrakis(picolinato)tungsten(IV) complex has been investigated by spectroscopic method in nonpolar solvent at 60$^{\circ}C$, 75$^{\circ}C$, 90$^{\circ}C$, 120$^{\circ}C$, and reflux condition. Until 2 days, showed the inertness whether existance of oxygen or not. After 2 days, showed the oxidation of W(IV) complex much more rapidly than substitution, which had $k_{obs}(sec^{-1}) {\varpropto} 1/[ligand]^2$. On sealing the sample under Ar gas, showed the inertness until 50 days, which had $k_{obs}(sec^{-1}) = 8.8{\times} 10^{-7}$. The$^1H$-NMR peak of $H_6$ in complex was diminished, otherwise that of free ligand was grown up. This result indicated that this complex was very inert.
Conjugated nanocrystals using CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystal quantum dots modified by organic linkers and glucose oxidase (GOx) were prepared for use as biosensors. The trioctylphophine oxide (TOPO)-capped QDs were first modified to give them water-solubility by terminal carboxyl groups that were bonded to the amino groups of GOx through an EDC/NHS coupling reaction. As the glucose concentration increased, the photoluminescence intensity was enhanced linearly due to the electron transfer during the enzymatic reaction. The UV-visible spectra of the as-prepared QDs are identical to that of QDs-MAA. This shows that these QDs do not become agglomerated during ligand exchanges. A photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic study showed that the PL intensity of the QDs-GOx bioconjugates was increased in the presence of glucose. These glucose sensors showed linearity up to approximately 15 mM and became gradually saturated above 15 mM because the excess glucose did not affect the enzymatic oxidation reaction past that amount. These biosensors show highly sensitive variation in terms of their photoluminescence depending on the glucose concentration.
The tetradentate Schiff base ligand, 3,4-bis(salicylidene diimine) toluene, have been prepared by the reaction of salicylaldehyde with 3,4-diaminotoluene by Duff method. The Schiff base ligand reacts with Ni(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) ions to form new complexes, [Ni(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$], [Co(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)$], and [Cu(o-BSDT)]. It seems that Ni(II) and Ni(II) complexes are hexacoordinated with the Schiff base ligand and two molecules of water, while the Cu(II) complexes are tetracoordinated with the Schiff base. The mole ratio of tetradentate Schiff base ligand to metals was found to be 1 : 1. The redox chemistry of these complexes was investigated by polarography and cyclic voltammetry with glassy carbon electrode in DMSO with 0.1M TEAP${\cdot}$[Ni(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$] hav EC reaction mechanisms which undergo a irreversible electron transfer followed by a fast chemical reaction. [Co(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$] undergoes a reduction of Co(II) to Co(I) and a oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III), and [Cu(o-BSDT)] undergoes a reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I).

Resistive RAM (ReRAM) is a strong candidate for the next-generation nonvolatile memories which use the resistive switching characteristic of transition metal oxides. The resistive switching behaviors originate from the redistribution of oxygen vacancies inside of the oxide film by applied programming voltage. Therefore, controlling the oxygen vacancy inside transition metal oxide film is most important to obtain and control the resistive switching characteristic. In this study, we introduced an applying electric field into photochemical metal-organic deposition (PMOD) process to control the oxidation state of metal oxide thin film during the photochemical reaction by UV exposure. As a result, the surface oxidation state of FeOx film could be successfully controlled by the electric field-assisted PMOD (EFAPMOD), and the controlled oxidation states were confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) I-V characteristic. And the resistive switching characteristics with the oxidation-state of the surface region could be controlled effectively by adjusting an electric field during EFAPMOD process.

Imagine a world where we could biomanufacture hybrid nanomaterials having atomic-scale resolution over functionality and architecture. Toward this vision, a fundamental challenge in materials science is how to design and synthesize protein-like material that can be fully self-assembled and exhibit information-specific process. In an ongoing effort to extend the fundamental understanding of protein structure to non-natural systems, we have designed a class of short peptides to fold like proteins and assemble into defined nanostructures. In this talk, I will talk about new strategies to drive the self-assembled structures designing sequence of peptide. I will also discuss about the specific interaction between proteins and inorganics that can be used for the development of new hybrid solar energy devices. Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen is one of the promising pathways for solar to energy convertsion and storage system. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been regarded as a major bottleneck in the overall water splitting process due to the slow transfer rate of four electrons and the high activation energy barrier for O-O bond formation. In nature, there is a water oxidation complex (WOC) in photosystem II (PSII) comprised of the earthabundant elements Mn and Ca. The WOC in photosystem II, in the form of a cubical CaMn4O5 cluster, efficiently catalyzes water oxidation under neutral conditions with extremely low overpotential (~160 mV) and a high TOF number. The cluster is stabilized by a surrounding redox-active peptide ligand, and undergo successive changes in oxidation state by PCET (proton-coupled electron transfer) reaction with the peptide ligand. It is fundamental challenge to achieve a level of structural complexity and functionality that rivals that seen in the cubane Mn4CaO5 cluster and surrounding peptide in nature. In this presentation, I will present a new strategy to mimic the natural photosystem. The approach is based on the atomically defined assembly based on the short redox-active peptide sequences. Additionally, I will show a newly identified manganese based compound that is very close to manganese clusters in photosystem II.
The aerobic oxidation of the Fe(II) complex of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, [Fe(cyclam)$(CH_3CN)_2](ClO_4)_2$, in MeCN in the presence of a few drops of $HClO_4$ leads to low spin Fe(III) species [Fe(cyclam)$(CH_3CN)_2](ClO_4)_3$. The Fe(III) cyclam complex is further oxidized in the air in the presence of a trace of water to produce the deep green binuclear bismacrocyclic Fe(II) complex $[Fe_2(C_{20}H_{36}N_8)(CH_3CN)_4](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2CH_3CN$. The Fe(II) ions of the complex are six-coordinated and the bismacrocyclic ligand is extensively unsaturated. $[Fe_2(C_{20}H_{36}N_8)(CH_3CN)_4](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2CH_3CN$ crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with a= 13.099 (1) ${\AA}$, b= 10.930 (1) ${\AA}$, c= 17.859 (1) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}$= 95.315 $(7)^{\circ}$, and Z= 2. The structure was solved by heavy atom methods and refined anisotropically to R values of R= 0.0633 and $R_w$= 0.0702 for 1819 observed reflections with F > $4{\sigma}$ (F) measured with Mo K${\alpha}$ radiation on a CAD-4 diffractometer. The two macrocyclic units are coupled through the bridgehead carbons of ${\beta}$-diimitie moieties by a double bond. The double bonds in each macrocycle unit are localized. The average bond distances of $Fe(II)-N_{imine}$, $Fe(II)-N_{amine}$, and $Fe(II)-N_{MeCN}$ are 1.890 (5), 2.001 (5), and 1.925 (6) ${\AA}$, respectively. The complex is diamagnetic, containing two low spin Fe(II) ions in the molecule. The complex shows extremely intense charge transfer band in the near infrared at 868 nm with ${\varepsilon}$= 25,000 $M^{-1}cm^{-1}$. The complex shows a one-electron oxidation wave at +0.83 volts and two one-electron reduction waves at -0.43 and-0.72 volts vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The complex reacts with carbon monoxide in $MeNO_2$ to form carbonyl adducts, whose $v_{CO}$ value (2010 $cm^{-1}$) indicates the ${\pi}$-accepting property of the present bismacrocyclic ligand.
$[(C_2B_9H_{11})Mo(CO)_3]_2PPN_2$$(2{\cdot}PPN_2)$, a new precursor for the oxidative decarbonylation reaction, was synthesized in high yield by the one-electron oxidation reaction of $[(C_2B_9H_{11})Mo(CO)_3]PPN_2$. $2{\cdot}PPN_2$ was structurally characterized, showing a dimeric nature with long (3.321 ${\AA}$) Mo-Mo bonding. Reaction of $2{\cdot}PPN_2$ with sulfur gave the completely decarbonylated product $[(C_2B_9H_{11})Mo({\mu}-S)(S)]_2PPN_2$ ($3{\cdot}PPN_2$). The ligand substitution of the terminal sulfur ligands in $3{\cdot}PPN_2$ to oxygen ligands was carried out with the use of PhIO to give $[(C_2B_9H_{11})Mo({\mu}-S)(O)]_2PPN_2$ ($4{\cdot}PPN_2$). The structures of $3{\cdot}PPN_2$ and $4{\cdot}PPN_2$ were also studied.
