Apparatus of rotating disk and cup are widely used spray paintings and industrial boilers. This study was conducted experimentally to investigate the characteristics of liquid atomization in a rotating disk atomizer by means of viscous liquid mixed water and glycerin. The Purpose of this study are to observe breakup mechanism according to the variation of supplied flow rate $0.4{\sim}30 cm^3/s$ and rotating speed $200{\sim}4000rpm$, and to investigate three kinds of breakup Pattern such as drop ligament and film formation by comparing the transition flow rate. ligament number and ligament length to those of Tanasawa and Matsumoto's empirical formula. The results are as follows ; The higher it makes use of viscous liquid. the better it get the characteristics of breakup mechanism. Also When I compared practical value with experiential value at similar test conditions. it was shown similar tendency though were a little variation.
In this study, the velocity characteristics of liquid elements formed by two impinging jets is analysed using double pulse image capturing technique. For the droplets formed by low speed impinging jets, the droplet velocities are higher with smaller azimuthal and impingement angle. The maximum droplet velocities are about 25 % lower than jet velocity. With an increase of azimuthal angle, the shedding angles increases but remains lower than azimuthal angle. The velocities of ligaments formed by high speed impinging jets gradually decreases with an increase of azimuthal angle. The maximum ligament velocities are about 40% lower than jet velocity. Higher impingement angles produce lower ligament velocities. The shedding angles of ligament almost increases with the same value of azimuthal angle, which implies that the moving direction of ligaments is radial from the origin as the impingement point.
This paper presents the effects of ambient pressure on atomization characteristics of high-Pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a shadowgraph technique. In order to investigate the atomization process numerically, the LISA-DDB hybrid model was utilized. This breakup model assumes that the primary breakup occurs when the amplitude of the unstable waves is equal to the radius of the ligament of liquid sheet near the nozzle and the droplet deformation induces the secondary breakup. The results provide the effect of ambient pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is also revealed that the accuracy of prediction of LISA-DDB hybrid model is pretty good in terms of spray developing process, spray tip penetration, and SMD distribution.
A unique feature of fluidic atomizers is that the nozzle geometry produces a thin capillary Jet which is forced to oscillate on a 2-dimensional plane through the use of a passive feedback mechanism. The objective of the current work is to characterize the influence of the stagnation pressure at the nozzle exit, jet oscillation and stretching on the breakup properties of the capillary ligament. To achieve this, shadow graph technique is used to measure size, shape, velocity and the number density of the droplets as a function of the position within the spray fan. The breakup length, defined as the radial distance from the breakup point, is analyzed as a function of the non-dimensional parameters. Finally, a kinematic model is developed to simulate the breakup of the oscillating jets at low stagnation pressures. Using the existing jet breakup theories, the model is used to predict the size and diameter distribution of the droplets after primary atomization.
The aim of this study was to provide the reasonable data for design of the nozzle which produces finer droplets on the same level of the effective travel distance or which transports droplets to the farther target on the reasonable atomization in comparison with the commercial nozzles being used much in Korean rural areas. Newly designed twin-fluid atomizers with some commercial nozzles were tested in this study, and their results were as follows : 1. The characteristics of the spray deposit distribution of No.1 nozzles for farther target were nearly same in the near or nearer travel distance less than 8m. Therefore it was reasonable to combine the characteristics of the spray deposit distributions of No.2 and No.3 nozzles to those of No.1 nozzle. 2. The effective travel distance was increased with increase of the sectional area of the jet ligament, and the maximum effective travel distance was reached to about 17m. 3. The droplet size was increased with increase of the sectional area of the jet ligament, and the maximum droplet size was produced in the front of the point of the maximum spray deposit distribution. 4. The atomization was excellent in the twin-fluid atomizer in comparison with the hydraulic atomizer and also the effective travel distances were nearly same level in both atomizers.
The present study has numerically and experimentally investigated the spray behavior of liquid jet injected in subsonic cross-flow. The corresponding spray characteristics are correlated with jet operating parameters. The spray dynamics are known to be distinctly different in the three regimes: the column, the ligament and the droplet regimes. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of liquid jet have been studied. Numerical and physical models are base on a modified KIVA code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model base on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. In odor to capture the spray trajectory, CCD camera has been utilized. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio and the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number.
7XXX aluminum alloy powders produced by the self-manufactured rotating disc atomizer were investigated to determine the influence of the atomization parameters on the particle size distributions in air atmosphere. The particle size distributions are almost always bimodal with the dominant mode on the large particle size. Average powder size of 7XXX aluminum alloy is $74/{\mu}m~125/{\mu}m$ when melt is poured with the rate of 9g /sec at 730$^{\circ}C$ on a rotating disc of 30㎜ diameter at 6300rad/sec. The mass of finer particle increased when disc diameter, angular velocity, pouring temperature increased and pouring rate decreased. The powder shapes of bimodal change from acicular to tear-drop and from tear-drop to ligament with increasing powder size. Powder shape was determined by the atomization mechanism and oxidation in liquid state. Microstructure of powders appeared to be cell and cellular dendrite. The SDAS of Al-7.9wt%Zn-2.4wt%Mg-1.5wt%Cu-0.9wt%Ni Powders is $0.8{\mu}m~1.0{\mu}m$ for the powders of $size+44{\mu}m~53{\mu}m$ and $1.6{\mu}m∼1.8{\mu}m$ for the powders of $size+105{\mu}m~125{\mu}m$, repectively.
The current trend in automotive finishing industry is to use more electrostatic rotating bell (ESRB) need space to their higher transfer efficiency. The flow physics related with the transfer efficiency is strongly influenced by operating parameters. In order to improve their high transfer efficiency without compromising the coating quality, a better understanding is necessary to the ESRB application of metallic basecoat painting for the automobile exterior. This paper presents the results from experimental investigation of the ESRB spray to apply water-borne painting. The visualization, the droplet size, and velocity measurements of the spray flow were conducted under the operating conditions such as liquid flow rate, shaping airflow rate, bell rotational speed, and electrostatic voltage setting. The optical techniques used in here were a microscopic and light sheet visualization by a copper vapor laser, and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Water was used as paint surrogate for simplicity. The results show that the bell rotating speed is the most important influencing parameter for atomization processes. Liquid flow rate and shaping airflow rate significantly influence the spray structure. Based on the microscopic visualization, the atomization process occurs in ligament breakup mode, which is one of three atomization modes in rotating atomizer. In the spray transport zone, droplets tend to distribute according to size with the larger drops on the outer periphery of spray. In addition, the results of present study provide detailed information on the paint spray structure and transfer processes.
The pressurized spray system with nitrogen gas was designed to fabricate the spherical AN(ammonium nitrate) particles. When AN melt was sprayed from a nozzle with equivalent diameter of 0.28mm into an ambient dry air, the ligament breakup mechanism of the molten AN was found to be responsible for the droplet formation(or disintegration) of AN melt. In the experimental range of spray temperature with $170{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ and atomization pressure with $0.1{\sim}0.4MPa$, the spherical AN particles with mean diameter of $130{\sim}250{\mu}m$ were obtained.
A new electrostatic rotary atomizing painting equipment using air turbine was developed for high transfer efficiency. Based on the overall design requirements of painting equipment, basic design specifications of the equipment parts such as air turbine and atomizing disk ate defined from the present conceptual design model. Air turbine is designed with the section profile of NACA airfoil, and its internal flow field is analyzed by commercial CFD code. Atomizing disk is designed to achieve the ligament type spray of paint with the use of visualization technique. Various experiments and tests are conducted to investigate the spray and the transfer characteristics of newly-designed painting equipment, and the measurement results are compared with the those of conventional painting equipments. The comparison results show the present painting equipment is superior to the conventional ones in the aspects of transfer efficiency and coating surface characteristics.
