Flow Characteristics of Fire Whirl for Different Heat Release Rate (발열량의 차이에 따른 Fire Whirl의 유동특성)

  • The fire whirl occurring by the instability of atmosphere is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force, caused by the rotating velocity. And it is difficult to extinguish the fire, because of increment of the spread rate with the flame height. In this study, for investigation of the flow characteristic of fire whirl for various heat release rate, numerical analysis is performed in same conditions with experiments, using the FDS which is developed at NIST. For validating of the numerical study, the results are compared with the experiment. The result shows that the relation between the characteristic length and the ratio of circulation versus the buoyancy force is $z_f$/D$^{\ast}$ = 0.304(${\Omega}/{\alpha}$)^2 - 1.334${\Omega}/{\alpha}$ + 5.516.

  • The Intense acoustic wave generated by the jet flame at the lift-off causes the vehicle to vibrate in the form of acoustic loads. The DSM-II(Distributing Source Method-II), which is a representative empirical acoustic loads prediction method, is a method of distributing a noise source along a jet flame axis and has advantages in calculation cost and accuracy. However, due to the limitation of the distributing method, there is a limit to accurately reflect the various launch pad configurations. In this study, acoustic loads prediction method which can freely distribute noise sources is studied. by introducing NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) modeling into empirical prediction method. For the verification of the newly introduced analytical technique of the NURBS, the acoustic loads prediction for the Epsilon rocket's low-noise launch pad shape was performed and the results of the analysis were compared with the existing prediction methods and experimental results.

Combustion Characteristics of Premixed Burner for Fuel Reformer (개질기용 예혼합 연소장치의 연소특성 연구)

  • Fuel processing systems which convert HC fuel into $H_2$ rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, auto-thermal reforming) need high temperature environment($600-1000^{\circ}C$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1-5kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural & anode off gas as reformer fuel. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity.

Numerical and Experimental Study on the Fire Whirl Characteristics of Oriental Oak Leaves (굴참나무 낙엽의 Fire Whirl 특성에 관한 실험 및 수치해석 연구)

  • The fire whirl occurring in the urban and/or wildland fire is generated by the instabilities of atmosphere. The fire whirl is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force. In this study, experimental and numerical studies are performed with oriental oak leaves, for investigating of the fire whirl characteristics occurred in wildland fire. As a result of experiment, the circulation intensity increases as the induced air speed increases, then the heat release rate and flame height increase 22.8%, 18.4% compared with open fire in highest circulation. Furthermore the numerical results shows same trend with the experiment.

Estimation Method of the Interchangeability Using Equivalent Gases in a Partial Premixed Gas Appliance (등가가스를 이용한 부분예혼합 가스기기의 호환성 판정법)

  • The estimation method of the interchangeability in a partial premixed appliance about various compositions of natural gases using equivalent gases, experimentally. The results of the experiment in which equivalent gases were used compared with those obtained in experiments in which natural gases were used; Images of flames, lift-off limits, CO emissions, and incomplete combustion indices in KS standard for the domestic gas range were considered. From the comparison, it was observed that the length and color of the flame of the equivalent gases were almost the same as those of imported natural gases. Further, in the case of gases with Wobbe indices greater than 51 MJ/$m^3$, the KS standard for lifting limits was satisfied. Furthermore, in the case of gases with Wobbe indices less than 56.3 MJ/$m^3$, the CO mole fractions are in the range 95-100 ppm. Hence, the range of Wobbe indices 51-56.3 MJ/$m^3$ was proposed to be the range for interchangeability from the points of view of lifting limits and incomplete combustion, as prescribed in the domestic gas range in the case of imported natural gases.
