The Coanda effect is noticeable when a jet stream is applied tangential to a curved surface since then the jet stream remains attached to the surface beyond the point where flow separates otherwise and results in augmentation of circulation and lift. Numerous experimental and numerical studies have been performed in various fields of aerodynamics to exploit the Coanda effect and many of them found to be useful. It can be speculated that the Coanda effect may have practical application to the field of marine hydrodynamics as well since various control surfaces are being used to control behaviors of ships and offshore structures. In the present study, the Coanda effect has been applied to a horn type rudder and a series of numerical computations and model experiments are performed to find the practical applicability. The results indicate that the Coanda jet increases the lift coefficient of the rudder as much as 52% at the momentum coefficient $C_j$ = 0.1 and the rudder angle ${\alpha}=10^{\circ}$.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.
Laminar flow over a cube near a plane wall is numerically investigated in order to understand the effects of the cube-wall gap on the flow characteristics as well as the drag and lift coefficients. The main focus is placed on the three-dimensional vortical structures and its relation to the lift force applied on the cube. Numerical simulations are performed for the Reynolds numbers between 100 and 300, covering several different flow regimes. Without a wall nearby, the flow at Re=100 is planar symmetric with no vortical structure in the wake. However, when the wall is located close to the cube, a pair of streamwise vortices is induced behind the cube. At Re=250, the wall strengthens the existing streamwise vortices and elongates them in the streamwise direction. As a result, the lift coefficients at Re=100 and 250 increase as the cube-wall gap decreases. On the other hand, without a wall, vortex shedding takes place at Re=300 in the form of a hairpin vortex whose strength changes in time. The head of hairpin vortex or loop vortex, which is closely related to the lift force, seems to disappear due to the nearby wall. Therefore, unlike at Re=100 and 250, the lift coefficient tends to decrease more or less as the cube approaches the wall.

A multi-objective design exploration for a three-element airfoil consisted of a slat, a main wing, and a flap was carried out. The lift curve improvement is important to design high-lift system, thus design has to be performed with considered multi-angle. The objective functions considered here are to maximize the lift coefficient at landing and near stall conditions simultaneously. Kriging surrogate model which was constructed based on several sample designs is introduced. The solution space was explored based on the maximization of Expected Improvement (EI) value corresponding to objective functions on the Krigingmodels. The improvement of the model and the exploration of the optimum can be advanced at the same time by maximizing EI value. In this study, a total of 90 sample points are evaluated using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation(RANS) for the construction of the Kriging model. In order to obtain the information of the design space, two data mining techniques are applied to design result. One is functional Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) which can show quantitative information and the other is Self-Organizing Map(SOM) which can show qualitative information.

A new feedback control law is proposed and tested for suppressing the vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. The lift coefficient ( $C_{L}$) is employed as a feedback control signal and the control forcing is given by a rotational oscillation of the cylinder. The influence of the feedback transfer function on the $C_{L}$ reduction is examined. The main rationale of the feedback control is that a feedback control forcing is imposed at a phase which is located outside the range of lock-on. By applying the feedback control law, $C_{L}$ is reduced significantly. Furthermore, the reduction mechanism of $C_{L}$ is analyzed by showing the vortex formation modes with respect to the forcing phase.e.ase.e.
The computation of the flow around a supercritical airfoil with a divergent trailing edge(DTE) modification(DLBA 243) is compared to that of original supercritical airfoil(DLBA 186). For this computation, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a linearized block implicit ADI method and a mixing length turbulence model. Results show the effects of the shock and separated flow regions on drag reduction due to DTE modification. Results also show that DTE modification accelerates the boundary layer flow near the trailing edges which has an effect similar to a chordwise extension that increases circulation and is consistent with the calculated increase in the recirculation region in the wake. Airfoil with DTE modification achieves the same lift coefficient at a lower incidence and thus at a lower drag coefficient, so that lift-to-drag ratio is increased in transonic cruise conditions compared to the original airfoil. The reduction in drag due to DTE modification is associated with weakening of shock strength and delay of shock which is greater than the increase in base drag.
This study presents a feedback control methodology for suppression of the vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. A rotational oscillation is applied as a controlled forcing and the lift coefficient ($C_L$) is used as a feedback signal. A feedback control concept is made based on the phase relation between the rotation velocity and $C_L$ at 'lock-on', The phase between the forcing and the vortex formation is changed $180^{\circ}$ from the phase of enhancing the lock-on state. This concept is examined by solving the Van del Pol equation. The results are satisfactory.

Active control of a flow field is essential to design efficient parts or elements relating to fluid machineries. The present study is aimed to suggest a new discretization technique of the convection term by renewing the non-conservative equation found in SOLA-VOF into a conservative one. And, as an application, flow characteristics are investigated by adjusting the backward ejecting velocity of 2-D square prism to control the aerodynamic properties. Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient are compared in terms of various ejecting velocity. Among the results, the transient weak fluctuation of the lift and drag coefficient when the ejecting velocity equals channel inlet velocity is remarkably noticed.

Asymmetric planing hulls are often used on high-speed catamarans. In this study, a linearized potential-flow method is applied for modeling steady hydrodynamics of single asymmetric hulls and their catamaran setups. Numerical results are validated with available experimental data and empirical correlations. Parametric calculation results are presented for the lift coefficient and the center of pressure for variable hull geometry, spacings, and speed regimes. The lift coefficient is found to increase at smaller hull spacings and decrease at higher Froude numbers and higher deadrise angles.
A new feedback control system based on system identification is proposed and preliminarily tested on Van der Pol equation which has a similar characteristic to circular cylinder. The same principle is applicable to circular cylinder in a uniform flow for suppresing the vortex shedding. The feedback controller is designed to impose feedback signal at the phase which is located outside the range of lock-on. The lift coefficient (CL) is employed as a feedback signal and the control forcing is given by a rotational oscillation of the cylinder. By applying the feedback control system, the lift coefficient is reduced.
