  • Objects: The purpose of this case-control study was done to examine the relationship between stroke prevalence and the anthropometric indices(body mass index(BMI), modified Broca's method(Broca's index), waist circumference(WC), waist-hip ratio(WHR)), dyslipidemia, past medical history(heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus(DM)), life-style factors(smoking, drinking) in Korean adults. Methods : The study group consisted of neurologically confirmed 116 stroke patients as the case group and 116 non-stroke patients as control group. Obesity were defined as $BMI{\geq}25kg/m^2,\;Broca's\;index{\geq}30%$, WC >94cm in male and WC >80cm in female, $WHR{\geq}0.9$ in male and $WHR{\geq}0.8$ in female. Oyslipidemia were defined as total $cholesterol{\geq}200mg/dl,\;triglyceride{\geq}200mg/dl,\;HDL-cholesterol {\leq}35mg/dl,\;LDL-cholesterol{\geq}160mg/dl$. Information on life-style factors and past medical history was obtained from personal interview. The analysis of the data was done by means of chi-square test(Pearson's chi-square test, Fisher's exact test) and student t-test. Results: The results were as follow. In the study group: Hypertension had a 4:05 odds ratio, Broca's $index{\geq}30%$ had a 1.98 odds ratio, WC >94cm in male had a 2.17 odds ratio, WC >80cm in female had a 2.80 odds ratio, $WHR{\geq}0.9$ in male had a 4.66 odds ratio, $WHR{\geq}0.8$ in female had a 5.35 odds ratio, but heart disease, DM, life-style factors, serum lipid and 8MI had no direct relationship with odds ratio(nonsignificant). By student t-test, risk factors for stroke were found to be total cholesterol(p=0,025), LDL-cholesterol(p=0.013), WC(p=0.000) and WHR(p=0.000). Conclusions: This study suggests that people should be advised to control hyperlitension, hyperlipidemia and obesity since these carry a risk of stroke.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between life style and clothing purchase intention and purchase criteria in internet shopping-mall of male and female consumers. The subjects were 275 internet users (male: 164, female: 111). The results of the study were as follows. Five factors of life style derived by factor analysis:'Digital Orientation','Economy Orientation','Positive Activity','Fun Orientation', and'Home Orientation'. The dress types to be based on the purchase intention in internet shopping-mall was classified into four dimensions by factor analysis: Casual Wears & Single Item Clothes','Formal Wears','Miscellaneous Goods', and'Underwears & Night Clothes'. Internet users showed relatively high purchase intention in casual wears & single item clothes and miscellaneous goods. Clothing purchase intention in internet shopping correlated significantly with home orientation in males, and with digital orientation in females. Subjects high in fun orientation placed importance on design as clothing purchase criteria. Males high in positive activity placed importance on price, color, sewing, brand, and wearing appearance. Females high in digital orientation believed design, color, material, refundment condition, and fashionability were important as purchase criteria. The level of digital orientation of dress purchasers in internet shopping-mall was higher than that of non-purchasers in case of males, and that of fun orientation was higher than that of non-purchasers in case of females. The present findings suggest that life style such as digital orientation and home orientation appeared to be important in predicting the clothing purchase intention in internet shopping mall.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the relationship among the life style, body composition, and BMD in female college students. Method: For this study, 320 female college students aged 18 through 35 were sampled. Data were collected from June to September, 2007. The BMD was measured with Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, body composition with the Body Composition Analyzer, and stature was also taken. Results: Our findings indicated that the relationship among the life style, body composition and BMD significantly varied and that meal times (F=3.318, p= .038) and muscle mass (r= .240, p< .001) and fat-free mass (r= .233, p< .001) showed a significant positive relationship with BMD. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that optimal levels of the fat-free mass and muscle mass should be maintained. Since a decrease in the quantity of bones is expected to cause health issues for women after menopause, it is necessary to reduce risk factors including the unhealthy life style of college women that may lead to osteoporosis, and to introduce preventive nursing interventions against osteoporosis.

  • Osteoporosis is a age-related metabolic disorder. Currently there is no cure, but there are measures that can prevent or deter the development of osteoporosis. Futhermore lifestyle among risk factors of osteoporosis may be modifiable. Osteoporotic preventive health promotion behavior may be more effective at early adult when they make formation of peak bone mass. The purpose of this study is to identify the demographic variables, life-style and level of concern about osteohealth-related factors according to the health promotion behavior among university female students. The result are following: 1. The highest level of concern about osteoporosis-related factor is sufficient sleeping. 2. The highest level of dietary about osteoporosis-related factors are vegetable and fruit. 3. Level of concern about osteoporosis-related factors according to demographic variables are not significantly different, but dietary were significantly different in age, height and income. 4. Level of concern about osteoporosis-related factors according to lifestyle are significantly different in weekly hour of exercise and weight control, and dietary are significantly different in milk intake at elementary school and present. 5. Level of concern about osteoporosis-related factors have correlated positively with dietary. University and College female students who participated in this study have concerned middle at calcium intake and exercise, but two variables are significantly different in lifestyle and dietary. Because of two variables are modifiable, it should be regarded importantly in nursing domain. We suppose that preventive education of osteoporosis is necessary to reach peak bone mass and to maintain bone mass consistently among the University and College female students.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among body composition, dietary intake, exercise, and life style in children(M=80, f=102) of the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. Anthropometry and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis were conducted to estimate body composition. Dietary intake, exercise, and life style were determined by using questionnaires. When obesity was classified greater than 120% of the ideal body weight, the prevalence rates of obesity were 31.2% for boy and 20.6% for girl. There were significant differences in body composition between nonobese(NO) and obese(OB) groups. Mean fat mass(FM) and lean body mass(LBM) were 8.6kg and 27.7kg for NO group and 16.7kg and 32.3kg for OB group, respectively. Also a significant difference was found in hydration rate(TBW/body weight)between groups( <0.01). No significant difference was found I total calorie intake and nutrient intakes between groups. No difference was found in the frequency and duration of outdoor exercise and indoor activities. Mean sleeping hours was 8-9hours for 62% of nonobese children and for 59% of obese children. However, calorie intake per body weight was significantly lower inobese children than in nonobese. The present study showed that significant differences existed in their body size and composition between NO and OB groups , while no differences existed in daily calorie intake, excercise , and life style. This may indicate that important obesity-promoting factors of early onset obesity may rely on other factors such as hereditary or environmental factors besides factors considered. Further studies are required to understand obesity-promoting factors in children. (Korean J Community Nutrition 2(5) : 680∼686, 1997)

  • Purpose: The reproductive health of women in early adulthood can affect pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause in later life. Menstrual symptoms not only affect daily life, but are also a reflection of a woman's reproductive health. This study was conducted to explore the factors affecting menstrual symptoms among university students. Methods: The general characteristics, life style, menstrual characteristics, stress, and menstrual symptom of 177 female students were assessed through an online survey at one university. An independent sample t-test, one-way variance analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: The menstrual symptom score was 91.68±32.11 points, and the score of 'mood change' was the highest. Stress (=.38, p<.001), amount of menstruation (=.20, p=.001), menarche age (=-.18, p=.003), health problems (=.16, p=.010), and age (=.15, p=.016) were found to have a significant effect on menstrual symptom, and the explanatory power of the regression model was 40%. Conclusion: This study investigated the degree and influencing factors of menstrual symptom using the Korean Menstrual Symptom Scale (KMSS) developed for Korean university students. Among the factors influencing menstrual symptom, stress appeared to play a significant role. Stress management, observation of menstrual characteristics, and general health care are necessary to maintain a woman's reproductive health.
