This study is an attempt to encourage the establishment of Friends groups in Korean public libraries and to provide library staff and local people some details on how friends groups were being developed in public libraries in other countries. friends groups can be established by those who are library volunteers and are willing to support their library. Public library personnel and particularly the Korean Library Association play an important role in initiating and operating Friends groups in Korean public libraries.

The purpose of this study is to explore the culture of an academic library, fictitiously titled the New Millennium Library(NML). The study employed various research methods: pilot interviews with academic library workers, field observation at NML, a value survey conducted among NML workers and structured interviews with selected volunteers fromthe pool of survey respondents. Information gathered on the NML's culture is presented in a chart of five cultural dimensions and three organizational layers. The study is expected to inform library culture research as well as organizational culture research through a utilization of mixed methodology.

This study attempts to compare Jeonju Municipal Library(JML) and RCPL(Richland County Public Library). It was expected that the comparison would give public librarians some suggestions as to their libraries' strengths and weaknesses. JML has shown some weaknesses compared to RCPL, specially, in the quality and quantity sections of resources, budgets, areas of library, public relations, circulations, reading club enrollment are strengths of RCPL, compared to JML. However, JML has the strength in the participation of a lot of volunteers and visitors to the library. JML should extend and publicize the high service quality as the citizens' library.

The purpose of this study is to propose supporting small libraries through investigating the ordinances of local governments. Based upon identifying of ordinances, there are direct and indirect supports for small libraries from local governments. Direct support is provide budget to small libraries and indirect supports are a cooperation between public library and small library, instruction for library staff, and supporting volunteers. Supporting methods for public small library are direct and indirect supports, but method for private library is indirect support.

This study analyzes the problem of braille library information services for visually handicapped and suggests the alternatives to solve the identified problems. This study uses a case study method and Pusan Braille Library was selected as a case. The data for this study were collected by the following two methods : (1) document analysis; (2) interviews with 1 staff and 6 users in the Pusan Braille Library. The emphasis of this study was on analyzing the problem; in braille library services, particularly from the following three aspects : (1) both quality and quantity of materials; (2) the facilities; (3) the human factors staffs and volunteers. Suggestion are made to improve the quality in information services of braille libraries - particularly, producing many diskette materials, establishing collection development policy of diskette materials, pervading computers and its facilities, reeducating braille library staffs to cope with rapidly developing information technology.

Recently, as voluntary activity has become more widespread, there have been some voluntary activity movements in the provision of library services for people with disabilities. This study aimed to develop a model on voluntary activity in library services for disabled people in public libraries. Survey data collected through three data collection methods showed that volunteer activities in public library services for the disabled were very poor, and recommended the training of library staff and volunteers serving disabled people, the management of educational programs for librarians about the disabled and the dissemination of standardized manuals. From the results of the survey, a voluntary activity model, based on three factors, the aims of library services, the types of the disabilities, and volunteer services including specific sub areas of services, was developed. Finally, this voluntary activity model will contribute to the theory development of library services for the disabled

In this study, the factor that affect use value of domestic public library was analysed. This study try to grasp the effect of various variables such as characteristics of the respondent and library through the measurement using CVM that extract the value by the user's statement. For this purpose, effective variables identified in the value measurement study of domestic and foreign public library was grasped and characteristics of the effective variables presented in the study examined. The factor influenced WTP representing library's value are the demographic characteristics such as gender, income, age and the using pattern such as frequency of use, time to visit. As to user's satisfaction and recognition, the recognition about librarian's satisfaction, place for resident's exchange, degree of financial support, culture-art volunteers are affecting depending on the service such as information, facilities and programs. The study comprehensively analysed the impact on the value measured by all types of public library in the nation and provided the information about property of value assessed by user according to region and scale. This information is expected to help the strategic policy making to enhance the value of library in the future.

Volunteers in public libraries are recognized only as internal manpower, so their sustainability and effectiveness are limited because the motivation for volunteering is hardly considered. This study aims to explore the motivation for volunteering in public libraries and the factors to continuation of the volunteering, and to analyze how these factors affect volunteer satisfaction and marketing intentions. To this end, the variables in this studies including satisfaction and motivation was defined operationally based on the related research and a pilot study with several in-depth interviews. A questionnaire survey was executed with the defined variables and the survey data were analyzed statistically. The results showed that the factors of emotional and psychological motivation influenced the satisfaction and marketing intention rather than the managerial factors such as remuneration. The results indicate the need for a change in volunteer management to a relationship-oriented management method. This study is meaningful in that it expands the value of volunteers in public libraries from as managerial to as marketing resources for public libraries.

As the volunteer activity has become universal, volunteers of public libraries have also grown both quantitatively and qualitatively. In this context, this study builds a theoretical background on the volunteer activity of public libraries; examines the volunteer activity management of public libraries using survey method including its planning, personal management and administration; and suggests some recommendations to promote the voluntary activity of public libraries. By so doing, this study aims at enhancing our understanding on the volunteer activity management of public libraries.

This study aims to examine and analyze the operations and activities of Friends of Libraries groups in foreign countries. Friends of Libraries are groups of people who are voluntarily associated in order to assist libraries in their work. They have been involved with various libraries in many countries for almost a century. They support libraries by raising funds, working as volunteers, performing P.R. activities, operating political campaigns and being involved in the community. Nowadays. Friends groups are considered more important than at any time in their history because they provide such diverse support. Thus, new groups are being established in many countries. This study suggests that the establishment of Friends groups could improve library operations and services in Korea.
