A Study on the Improvement of Korean Journal Citation Index Service

  • The KJC and KCI services operated by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) need to refer to the global citation index database to set the service direction that researchers want and develop new functions. Therefore, in this study, the usability of Korea's KJC and KCI web databases was evaluated. In addition, FGI verification was performed for a group of experts on KJC and KCI improvement measures derived by academic information experts. The evaluation committee consisted of the researcher group, the society related group, the publisher (academic information distribution organization) group, and the policy-making organization group. A total of 16 experts performed usability evaluation and service improvement proposals for KJC and KCI services. As a result of usability evaluation of KJC and KCI web database using SUS measurement tool, KJC service was evaluated as 73.44, and KCI service was evaluated as good as 64.38. KJC improvement proposals were evaluated positively with 4 points or more for all improvement items, and KCI improvement proposals were positively evaluated with 3.5 points or more for all improvement items. Overall, KJC and KCI error improvements were evaluated with a score of 4 or more, showing strong affirmations. In the future, it is hoped that the improvement proposals and improvements proposed in this study will be applied to the development of KJC and KCI services, so that more quality services will be used by domestic researchers.

A Study on Intention of Accepting for Consumer Health Information Services in Public Libraries (공공도서관 이용자의 건강정보서비스 수용의도에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to analyze contents of websites which provide health information service. The study reviewed 5 websites and selected 15 sample contents among them. Based on the case model that extracted the contents from the websites, this research analyzed the usefulness of the contents. As a result, the usefulness of all the contents are rated above the average. Among the contents, The active core contents include 'information for librarians', 'information bout cancer', 'health related database', and 'multi-lingual health information'.

A Study on the Archives Management of $Chos\v{o}n-chongdokbu$ (일제 조선총독부의 문서관리에 관한 연구)

  • Government archives are basic source materials in the historical study. Whereas, researches on the archives of Choson-chongdokbu have been very scant. Those archives contain information about both colonism of Japan and independent movement of Korea are comparatively well preserved at Government Archives and Record Services. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristic of archives and to evaluate the system of archival management of Choson-chongdokbu. Based on the official gazette and archives of Choson-chongdokbu, this study has revealed the division of archival work, the writing and treatment of official document, compilation and preservation, and the procedure of use and destruction. As a result of the research, the followings have been identified; 1. Archival regulations were prepared by the instructions of Choson­chongdokbu at the early days of its establishment. Inspite of several revisions, its basis was maintained until 1945. 2. Each agency had its own archival department instead of central archives. 3. The archival department of Choson-chongdokbu controlled the archival administration of headquarters and attached agencies. But the secret archives were managed by the secretarial department. 4. The writing and treatment of archives were done by the archival regulation made in 1911. 5. Each agency had set more or less different preservation period. 6. There were three ways of using archives, 1) the in-house reading 2) the loan 3) the transcriptions. The archives passed the preservation period were destroyed in accordance with the related departments.

  • This study intends to analyze the meanings and values of shared cataloging in public libraries. Emphasis was on verifying how useful KOLIS-NET is as a tool in order to share bibliographic data and library resources. To the end. this study investigates the recognition and participation of KOLIS-NET in public libraries. Finally suggested is strategies to improve both the poor quality and the poor services. The data needed for discussion were collected by an in-depth interviews with catalogers and a survey with 216 public libraries.

A Study on the Standards and Guidelines Related to Bookmobile Service (이동도서관 서비스 기준 및 지침에 관한 연구)

  • This study tried to analyze 11 standards and guidelines related to bookmobile service to provide the theoretical basis for establishing bookmobile standards or guidelines in Korea. In these standards and guidelines, there were 9 core elements about bookmobile service including administration, vehicle, staffing, collections, schedule & stops, services & programs, marketing & public relations, information & communication technology and safety, and each element had several related sub-elements. In conclusion, some suggestions were proposed to assist the establishment process of bookmobile standards or guidelines in Korea.

Availability of Accessible Large-Print Books for the Readers with Presbyopia in Korea (노안 독자를 위한 큰글자도서 이용가능성 연구)

  • Services for the elderly is a new challenge for the libraries in aging society. This study reviewed the obstacles faced by the old readers and presbyopia, and analyzed the states of the large-print books to understand and estimate the Korean large-print books availability. Based on the bibliographic list of large-print books collected by the National Library of Korea, large-print book stock list of the Kyobo Book Center, large-print book lists supplied to the libraries by the Korean Library Association, and the data of the previous Library Survey for the Disabled, number of titles and volumes, publication year, duplication, and subject field of the large-print books available are analyzed. Based on the results, problems are identified and recommendations for bibliographic control, collection development, reading promotion, and further research area are suggested.

  • This study intends to shed light on the everyday lives of the urban poor in four metro areas in Korea, viewed especially from the information perspective. Employing in-depth interviews and participant observation interchangeably, it attempts to illustrate such phenomena as information poverty, and to scrutinize the reasons of their passive behaviors in information seeking. This paper, specifically, focuses on the following characteristics of information need and information related behaviors of the urban poor : types of everyday concerns and ways to deal with them: characteristics of the help provided: types of information sources consulted : na, barriers and limitation of everyday information seeking and information use.

The Cooperative Storage Facilities for Academic Libraries in Other Countries (해외 대학도서관 공동보존서고 구축 및 운영에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the characteristics of seven major cooperative storage facilities for academic libraries in the U.S.A, Australia, and Scotland in order to provide a frame of reference for such a facility in Korea. Analyzed are unique characteristics of these storage facilities in relation to their physical facilities, uses and services for collections, participating organizations, ownership of resources, and integrated library management and access systems. Some objectives of operations and physical environments are shared by these storage facilities, and have some implications for the development of cooperative storage facilities in Korea.

  • American Academic Accreditation System was reviewed. Current accreditation standards of the six regional accreditation associations were analysed with reference to the evaluation of academic libraries. That analysis was led to the recognition of some trends; mission and goal based assessment, qualitative evaluation, emphasis on the student learning outcomes, emphasis on the teaching role of academic librarians, distance education, and less prescriptive text. Some suggestions were made for revision of the Korean academic accreditation standards related to libraries.

A Study on Qualitative Improvement in the Information Services of University Libraries Through FISP (FISP를 통한 대학도서관 정보서비스 질적 향상에 관한 연구)

  • A survey was conducted with 155 professors in 23 universities in Seoul. The survey investigated recognition and the present condition of FISP among those professors, the results of which were analyzed in terms of three aspects: recognition of FISP, utility and implementation of FISP, and FISP users' satisfaction and opinions. of professors, FISP users were most frequently using it to write a treatise, while non-FISP users failed to use it because they had no information of its existence. Both FISP and non-FISP users significantly favored implementation of FISP and showed very positive intention of using it.
