This study aimed at analyzing the influence factors of the academic library on college's education and research performances. The researched subject was 144 colleges targeted for information disclosure by Center for Higher Education Information Disclosure. The conclusion of the present study is as follows. First, the educational performance in college showed the positive relation with 'library environment' variables except 'seating capacity per capita'. Second, the educational performance in college was positively related to the variable of 'library outcome' and particularly, it was directly influenced by circulation, visit, and interlibrary loan. Third, the research performance in college showed a positive correlation with 'library environment' variables except facility scale of library. Fourth, the research performance in college showed a positive relation with the variable of 'library outcome' and research performance excluding 'publication in domestic journals per capita' was positively influenced by 'document delivery services usage per capita' and 'commercial DB usage per capita' in common.

As the Web continues to expand and the amount of database increases, it is argued that the information scanning in web-centric search and retrieval become an important and professional activity. This analysis was performed to diagnose the ability of information scanning of searchers and to investigate the obstacles hindering the searchers from information scanning. Findings indicate that, even if the undergraduate students of information & library science had been exposed themselves to the LIS curriculum for four or three college years, their ability of information scanning was not sufficient enough to carry out successful DB searching or retrieval services as subject specialists. Some suggestions for improving information scanning ability of information professionals were derived from the experiment results.

This paper reports the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) project whose goal is to develop an operational framework to provide the K-12 teachers in the world with 'one-stop/any-stop' access to thousands of lesson plans, curriculum units and other Internet-based educational resources. To the IS-element Dublin Core base package, the GEM project added an 8-element, domain-specific GEM package. The GEM project employed the conceptual data modeling approach to designing the GEM database, used the Sybase relational database management system (RDBMS) to construct the backend database for storing the metadata of educational resources, and also employed the active server page (ASP) technology to provide Web interfaces to that database. The consortium members catalog lesson plans and other Internet-based educational resources using a cataloging module program that produces HTML meta tags. A harvest program collects these meta tags across the Internet and outputs an ASCII file that conforms to the standard agreed by the consortium members. A parser program processes this file to enter meta tags automatically into appropriate relational tables in the Sybase database. The conceptual/logical schemas of Dublin Core and GEM profile are presented. The advantages of conceptual modeling approach to manage metadata are discussed. A prototype system that provides access to the GEM metadata is available at http://lis.skku.ac.kr/gem/.

This study aims to develop metadata elements and vocabularies of 'Chosunsibo' issued in Korea during the Japanese colonial era. Despite the vast amount and historical values, newspaper articles in Chosunsibo are still unsearchable and difficult to access. To the end, this study includes as follows: (1) analyzed the DB construction and metadata elements of newspapers issued in Korea during the Japanese colonial, (2) investigated the morphological characteristics and content of 'Chosunsibo', and (3) derived metadata elements, encoding schemes and controlled vocabularies for 'Chosunsibo'. The final draft was verified in three methods: (1) review and revise through data input tests, (2) consulting by a DB expert agency, and (3) drawing up of crosswalks with metadata standards and related cases. The scope of this study is to design the metadata schema of the historical newspaper 'Chosunsibo' and develop a data input system based on that schema.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the structural relationship between the use of a web medium and learning commitment to develop creative talent for higher media integrated Korean classical literature education. For this we used DBs of The 'Encyclopedia of Korean Local Culture(a local culture DB)' built by the Academy of Korean Studies, and a survey was conducted on 418 high school students, attending a classical literature class which used a local culture DB. The result of this study demonstrates media usefulness of local culture DBs' positive effect on learning commitment. Specifically, media richness and media experience affects the learning commitment through the medium usefulness. These results indicate that in order to encourage learner's medium experience and increase medium richness it is necessary to increase the utilization of mediums, such as local culture DBs.

In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of a DB system for providing comprehensive information retrieval service about social economic information. We classify social economic organizations into 6 major categories and 35 small categories. The DB contains 25,938 social economic organizations in total. The DB system provides simple and intuitive interface for searching information such as keyword search, category search and initial search. Fully loaded time of webpage of implemented DB system achieved 2.3s by Vancouver, Canada Server.

The purpose of this study is to increase the effective utilization of library homepages by providing design guidelines. Seven of the library homepages are selected and have their menus of library homepages do share Each library homepage has it's own distinct characteristics, however the library homepages do share five common services : User Service. OPAC, CD-ROM Search, DB Search, Related Sites, Other Services. The result of this study can be used as the basic data for researching of library homepage's interface designs and collection development of electronic information.

It defined the standard list of the urban foundation facility which from the local self-government it is managing with commonness and standard items and standard option and a construction plan it drew up "Urban Foundation Facility Electronic Library" it researched. "Urban Foundation Facility Electronic Library" defines with the aggregate of the component DB which lets to collect the organization, quality and form of the urban Foundation facility back attribute item system from the Geographic Information System(GIS). Consequently after the "Urban Foundation Facility Electronic Library" is constructed, it presented the application plan from on-the-spot inspection. Also it applied in the ubiquitous environment which is actualized quickly the plan which it does in the RFID and sensor network and electronic library grafting it presented. The connection use of the RFID and was possible from the Facility civil official test which applies the RFID.

In this paper, a database interface system with natural language dialogue is designed and implemented. The system is made up of language analysis, context processing, dialogue processing and DB processing unit. The method for classifying and processing an undefined word in language analysis is proposed. It reduces the dictionary size, which gives difficulties in DB Interface. And the current DB Interfaces dealt with an input utterance independently. But the system in this paper provides a user with the interface environment in which he or she can have a continuous conversation with the system and retrieve DB information. Thus in this paper, speech acts which include user's inattentions well as propositional contents are defined, and user action hierarchical model for library DB retrieval is constructed. And the system uses the defined knowledge to recognize-user's plan, effectively understanding and managing the ongoing dialogue. And the system is implemented in the domain of library database in order to prove the proposed methods in this paper.
