  • Effects of reaction time and temperature on the isomerization and dehydrobromination reactions of brominated butyl rubber were investigated. The structural composition of brominated butyl rubber was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy($^1H$-NMR), Density functional theory (DFT) was used to study on the isomerization and dehydrobromination mechanisms of model compounds. The geometries for model compounds of 3-bromo-5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-2(2',2',4',4'-tetramethyl)pentyl-1-octylene (3BrOE), 1-bromo-5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-2(2',2',4',4'-tetramethyl)pentyl-2-octylene (1Br2OE) and 5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-2(2',2', 4',4'-tetramethyl)pentyl-1,3-octadiene (CD) had been optimized by using density functional theory at B3LYP/3-21G and B3LYP/6-31G levels. The predicted energy of 3BrOE lies higher than that of 1Br2OE which suggests that 1Br2OE configuration is more stable than the 3BrOE configuration. Compared with the energy barrier, the pathway of dehydrobromination is less competitive than that of isomerization. This is qualitatively consistent with the experimental results.

  • Lithium ferrites are prominent in the element of microwave frequency communication core and high frequency memory core because of their low coercivity and the high squareness ratio. This paper reports primarily the development of lithium ferrites with the low coercivity and high squareness ratio. The materials with $Li_{0.48-0.5x}Bi_{0.02}Ni_{0.04}Zn_xFe_{2.46-0.5x}O_4$ (x = 0,0.01, 0.02, 0.03) have been prepared to investigate the physical properties. The addition of ZnO gave raised maximum induction $(B_m)$ and decreased coercive force $(H_c)$, but the squareness ratio $(R\;=\;B_m/B_r)$ was decreased. The specimen of squareness ratio R=0.82, coercive force $H_c=\;1.80\;Oe$ was obtained for $Li_{0.48-0.5x}Bi_{0.02}Ni_{0.04}Zn_xFe_{2.46-0.5x}O_4$ (X=0) sintered at 105$0^{\circ}C$. Also the sample of squareness ratio R = 0.75, coercive force $H_c=\;1.70\;Oe$ for $Li_{0.48-0.5x}Bi_{0.02}Ni_{0.04}Zn_xFe_{2.46-0.5x}O_4$ (X = 0) sintered at 110$0^{\circ}C$ was measured. The Tc was obtained 463$^{\circ}C$ and the Br of environmental temperature variation was stable.

  • Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the gas-liquid system. While the non-absorbable gas does not participate directly In the absorption process. its pretence does affect the overall heat and mass transfer. An experimental study was performed to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of LiBr-H$_2$O solution flow ing over 6-row horizontal tubes with the water vapor absorption in the pretence of non-absorbable gases. The volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas, air, was varied from 0.17 to 10.0%. The combined effects of the solution flow rate and its concentration on the heat and mass transfer coefficients were also examined. The presence of 2% volumetric concentration of air resulted in a 25% reduction in the Nusselt number and 41% reduction in the Sherwood number Optimum film Reynolds number was found to exist at which the heat and mass transfer reach their maximum value independent of air contents. Reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. defined as the ratio of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at given non-absorbable gas content to that with pure water vapor, were correlated to account for the reduction in the heat and mass transfer due to non-absorbable gases in a falling film absorption process.

  • The present study has been directed at developing thermal models to investigate the dynamic behavior of a solar cooling system including an absorption chiller, solar collectors, a hot water storage tank, a fan coil unit, and the air-conditioned space. The operation of the system was simulated for 8 hours in two different operation modes. In the mode 1, the system operated without any capacity control.0 the mode 2, an auxiliary boiler supplied heat to the generator if hot water temperature became lower than a certain value. Moreover, the mass flow rate of hot water to the generator was controlled by comparing the instantaneous room air temperature with the design value. The variation of temperature and concentration in the system components and that of heat transfer rates in the system were obtained for both modes of operation. It was found that the room temperature was maintained near the desired value in the mode 2 by supplying auxiliary heat or controlling the mass flow rate of hot water, while the deviation of room temperature was quite great in the mode 2.

  • Effects of a non-absorbable gas on the absorption process in a vertical tube absorber has been investigated numerically. The water vapor mixed with air is absorbed into LiBr/water solution film. The flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed in both liquid and gas phases. The diffusion and energy equations were solved in both phases to give the temperature and concentrations, from which heat and mass fluxes were determined. The local absorption rate has been shown to decrease as the mass fraction of air in the water vapor increases. The vapor pressure of water at the liquid-vapor is interface reduced significantly since the non-absorbable gas accumulates near the interface. The effects of non-absorbable gases on absorption rate become larger as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. For a small amount of non-absorbable gases, the total absorption rate of water vapor increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. The total absorption rate increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor increases for large concentrations of non-absorbable gases at the inlet of an absorber.

  • The series of alkali metal perhalogenates, $MXO_4$ (M=Li, Na, K and X=F, Cl, Br, I) were theoretically studied with the help of MP2 methods. Bidentate as well as tridentate structures were found to be stable minima. The bidentate structures are becoming preferred as the size of halogen increases and as the size of metal decreases. Geometrically, the M-O and M-X distances of both bidentate and tridentate structures, increase with the size of metal. Generally, the M-$O_1$ distances of tridentate forms are longer than the corresponding distances of bidentate forms, while the M-X distances of tridentate forms show the opposite trend. Similarly, the X-O bonds increase with the size of halogens except $MXO_4$ pairs, where the X-O bonds are unusually long due to the enhanced oxygen-oxygen repulsions. In short, the relative energetics as well as the geometrical parameters are found to be strongly dependent on halogen and metal elements.

  • The corrosion behavior of duplex stainless steel AISI 2205 was investigated in ethylene glycol-water mixture in the presence of 50 W/V % LiBr at different concentrations and different temperatures. Cyclic polarization, impedance measurements and Mott-Schottky analysis were used to study the corrosion behavior the semi conductive properties of the passive films. The results showed that with increasing in the ethylene glycol concentration to 10 V/V%, the corrosion rate of the steel alloy substrate increased. In higher concentrations of ethylene glycol, corrosion current of steel decreased. The results of scanning electron microscopy of electrode surface confirmed the electrochemical tests. Electrochemical experiment showed that duplex steel was stable for pitting corrosion in this environment. The increase in the ethylene glycol concentration led to increasing the susceptibility to pitting corrosion. The corrosion current increased as the temperature rise and also pitting potentials and repassivation potentials shifted towards the less positive values as the temperature increased. According to Mott-Schottky analysis, passive films of stainless steel at the different temperatures showed both n-type and p-type semiconductor behavior in different potential.

  • In general, an absorption chiller or heat pump is operated under the constant cooling water flow rate condition even though the system works with a partial load. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of the cooling water flow rates and the temperature of cooling water on the system performance to find the energy saving methode for the partial load operation of the double effect $H_2O$/LiBr absorption chiller. It is found that the performance of the system is sensitive to the temperature of cooling water than the cooling water flow rate, so the decrease of the performance due to reducing the cooling water flow rate can be overcome with the reduction of the cooling water temperature by 1$^{\circ}C$. The flow rate of the cooling water flow rate ranges from 50% to 100% of the flow rate at normal conditions with a partial load. It is also found that the operation cost of the cooling water pump and the cooling tower can be reduced by 23%.

  • The objectives of this paper are to develop a new method of wettability mea-surement and to study the effect of surface roughness on the wettability in a $H_2O$/LiBr falling film absorber. Two absorber tubes with micro-scale roughness and a bare tube are tested in a falling film absorber installed in a test rig. Inlet solution temperature, concentration and mass flow rate are considered as key parameters. A new method is proposed to estimate the wettability of a tube by measuring a minimum mass flow rate to wet the tube completely. The wettability for the structured surfaces was higher than that for the bare tube. The wettability decreased linearly along the vertical location. The wettability increased with increasing the solution temperature and the solution mass flow rate. The experimental correlations of the wettability for the bare and the micro-hatched tubes were developed with error bands of$\pm20%\;and\;\pm10%$, respectively. This work can be used in the design of absorbers with micro-scale roughness.

  • This paper deals with the correlation of absorption rate in absorber and evaporation rate in evaporator. The evaporator consists of a copper tube of 10mm dia, and 600mm long and chilled water flowing through the tube is fed by the chilled water circulator. The flowrate of LiBr-water solution in the absorber plays a significant role in determining the magnitude of the heat transfer rate from chilled water to refrigerant There exists a flowrate of solution which has a maximum value of heat transfer. It is interesting to note that the absorption rate of absorber increases with increasing the heat transfer rate of the evaporator. Also, absorption rate increases with evaportation rate, and the ratio(the former/the other) depends on the inlet temperature of LiBr-water solution in the absorber. The heating capacity in the absorber is higher than the refrigerating capacity in the evaporator.
