  • CDSS provides clinical doctors with knowledge to be required when they diagnose or make decision about treatment strategy. Arden Syntax is one of the language with which we write MLM that is a component of CDSS. It was designated as a standard by HL7/ANSI. ArdenML is an XML version of Arden Syntax. In this paper we propose a tool which translates Arden Syntax MLMs into ArdenML MLM. To this end we first defines the corresponding relation between two languages. Next we presents a modified version of Arden Syntax grammar to improve performance of lexical analysis and minimize parsing conflicts. Finally we presents syntax and semantics gaps between the both languages, which are a structural representation problem, a data type problem, and a disrelation problem. Our translator resolves such issues and generates exact ArdenML codes for an arbitrary Arden Syntax MLM.

  • This study explores the lexical-semantic structure of derived causative verbs in Korean based on Pustejovsky(1995)'s Generative Lexicon Theory (GL). Morphological causative verbs are derived from their root stems by affixing ‘-i, -hi, -li, -gi’ in Korean and the meanings of derived predicates are closely related to the meanings of their root verbs. In particular, the change of the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE by morphological derivation leads to the change of the EVENT STRUCTURE. The ARGUMENT STRUCTURES of derived causative verbs include a causer argument, which is added to the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE of their root verbs by means of the causative derivation. Their EVENT STRUCTURE has a headed process related to a causer and its result is the event which their root verbs denote. This approach can also suggest that the (in)directness of causative is dependent on is the semantics of its root verb.

  • This paper argues for a need to adopt a conceptually radical approach to zero anaphora resolution in Korean. It is shown that a number of apparently conflicting constraints, mostly motivated by lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors, are involved in determining the referential identity of zero pronouns in Korean. It is also argued that some of the major concepts of Optimality Theory can provide a good theoretical framework to predict the antecedents to zero pronouns in general. A partial formalization of 07-based constraints at the morpho-syntactic and lexico-semantical level is provided. It is argued that the lexico-semantic restrictions on adjacent expressions play the most important role in the anaphora resolution process along with a variant of the binding principle, formulated in semantic terms. Other pragmatically motivated constraints that incorporate some important intuitions of Centering Theory are proposed too.

  • This paper examines existing approaches to exceptive constructions, which typically serve to maintain the use of universal quantifiers by diminishing the domain quantified over. It places a particular focus on constructions involving Korean oyey, Dutch behalve, and English apart from, other than, and aside from. These lexical items all share an interesting semantic property that they mean either 'except' or 'besides' depending upon their linguistic contexts, but they have largely been ignored in the literature of exceptive constructions. An observation is made that the two meanings of the ambiguous exceptive words are in complementary distribution with respect to types of quantifiers and that they are not an isolated fact. Based on this, a unifying formal semantic analysis is attempted for the constructions.

  • The aim of this paper is twofold: to identify two types of even if concessive conditionals, standing-ifs and introduced-ifs (Bennett 1982) in terms of whether the truth of the consequent is 'entailed' (the consequent-entailment problem in terms of Lycan 2001); and to analyze these two types of concessive conditionals in a compositional way. Here we argue that, following Guerzoni and Lim (2007), even if conditionals can be analyzed as the cases where even gets its focus in conditionals. We also argue that the consequent-entailment problem can be accounted for in a compositional way if we identify the focus as well as the scope of even in conditionals correctly. We further argue that the analysis presented in this paper supports the scope theory of even, among two theories of even previously proposed in various works. We also consider the possibility where concessive conditionals without even can be analyzed as an extension of the analysis proposed in this paper.

  • Identifying optimal feature sets in Text Categorization(TC) is crucial in terms of improving the effectiveness. In this study, experiments on feature expansion were conducted using author provided keyword sets and article titles from typical scientific journal articles. The tool used for expanding feature sets is WordNet, a lexical database for English words. Given a data set and a lexical tool, this study presented that feature expansion with synonymous relationship was significantly effective on improving the results of TC. The experiment results pointed out that when expanding feature sets with synonyms using on classifier names, the effectiveness of TC was considerably improved regardless of word sense disambiguation.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and systematize Jeju dialectal words about Jeju traditional housing culture and study them on the basis of lexical semantics. Vocabularies related to the names of the traditional thatched-roof house and its partial names, thatching, supplementary facilities, housing culture, etc. were categorized after recording in an ethnographic way from Seongeup folk village which is Important Folklore Material no.188, and studied them linguistically. Informants are fore people who were born and bred in Seongeup-ri and they are over 70. They have a lot of experiences building thatched-roof houses from a young age. There are 9 different categories - the kind of the house, partial names, exterior space, materials, tools, words about actions, doers, units, and folklore. Some new words related to Jeju traditional housing, which had not been in the list of Korean dictionary, could be introduced as a result of the study. For example, rice which are made when doing earth work is called Heukppap and adzes used to sharpen stones are called Dolchagui. The finding of These new words hopefully contribute to the promotion of Korean language as well as enrich vocabulary on housing. Furthermore, the collected vocabularies and oral materials could be used as important educational materials to comprehend Jeju traditional housing culture.

  • Coordinate constructions in natural language pose a number of difficulties to natural language processing units, due to the increased complexity of syntactic analysis, the syntactic ambiguity of the involved lexical items, and the apparent deletion of predicates in various places. In this paper, we address the syntactic characteristics of the coordinate constructions in Korean from the viewpoint of constructing a competence grammar, and present a version of combinatory categorial grammar for the analysis of coordinate constructions in Korean. We also show how to utilize a unified lexicon in the proposed grammar formalism in deriving the sentential semantics and associated information structures as well, in order to capture the discourse functions of coordinate constructions in Korean. The presented analysis conforms to the common wisdom that coordinate constructions are utilized in language not simply to reduce multiple sentences to a single sentence, but also to convey the information of contrast. Finally, we provide an analysis of sample corpora for the frequency of coordinate constructions in Korean and discuss some problematic cases.
