  • The most common abnormal relationship between the great arteries and ventricle is transposition of great arteries, among which complete D-transposition is a common and lethal malformation. Without appropriate treatment, the infant born with transposition of the great arteries rarely survives the first year of life. In contrast to the grim hopelessness of only a few years ago, modern aggressive palliative and corrective surgical interventions can provide such infants with considerable hope for adolescent and adult life. Up until this time, intraatrial baffle technique for re-direction of venous return, which was proposed by Mustard originally, has been successfully applied to infants and children in many foreign clinics with decreasing trend of the operative risk. In this report, we present one case of a 4 year-old girl having complete D-transposition of the great arteries with atrial septal defect, and reviewed the relevant literatures.

  • Mechanical valve thrombosis is a serious and potential lethal complication unless early diagnosis & prompt therapy are made. We have been experienced 3 cases of valve thrombosis. From Aug. 1988 to July 1994, reoperations of mitral valve replacement [MVR] with mechanical prostheses [all mitral] were performed in three patients[2 men, 1 woman] due to valve thromboses. All three patients were diagnosed by means of cineradiography. Preoperative status of was shock status and he was applied intra-aortic balloon pump [IABP]. All three cases of prosthetic valve failure [PVF] were treated by Redo-MVR. Time intervals of reoperations were 5months, 40months, and 35months, respectively. In all cases, valve thromboses were excised successfully. Cineradiography provided an accurate diagnosis in all cases, which was utilized as safe, reliable & noninvasive imaging modalities. There were no operative death & complication. All three patients were fully recovered and returned to their employements, and active lives.

  • Series of experiments were conducted to determine lethal does of X-ray and Neutron on Toxoplasma gondii. strain RH and IRI. As well morphological changes of Toxoplasma gondii irradiated or not were compared by use of electron microscope. The pathogenicity test of the irradiated and nonirradiated Toxoplasma gondii was made in mice guinea-pigs, rabbits and pigs: The letahl dose of X-ray and Neutron on RH and IRI strain and the growth rate between two strains after irradiation were shown little differences. Morphological changes were not observed until 18th passage was made. After then, the growth rate was decreased apparently, and atrophied forms were frequently observed in electron microscope. Survival time of animals inoculated with irradiated strain was longer than that of animals giving non-irradiated strain, and Toxoplasma gondii were isolated from all the dead animals. But it is of interest that pigs survived after injection of Toxoplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were failed toisolate Toxplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were slaughtered them. Animals were succumbed after injection of Toxoplasma gondii without any relationship with serum titers. (HA antibody).

  • Some streptomycin resistant strains of Rhizobium trifolii having nodulation ability were selected, and their nitrogenase activities, symbiotic effects on plant growth, and nodule electronmicroscope were compared with those of the wild type. After NTG treatment, as a mutagen, at the concentration exhibiting 99.7% lethal rate, 5 strains of streptomycin resistant mutant having nodulating ability were selected. Among these nodulating mutant strains, 3 strains produced more nodules and 2 strains showed less nodules than wild type. But their nitrogenase activities were decreased significantly, and nodule formation time was also delay compared with those of the wild type, and there was no remarkable difference in effects on plant growth. Microstructure of nodules by electronmicroscopy had mant distinctive differences between red clover nodules inoculated with wild type and mutants.

  • Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.

  • As an environment-friendly phytosanitary measure, CATTS (controlled atmosphere temperature treatment system) has been developed to kill several quarantine insect pests infesting subtropical agricultural commodities. This study tested any possibility to apply CATTS to apples to effectively eliminate the peach fruit moth, Carposina sasakii, which has been regarded as a quarantine insect from the imported countries. When the larvae of C. sasakii were directly exposed to $46^{\circ}C$ (an installed lethal temperature of CATTS), they showed a median lethal time at 14.66 min. Addition of high carbon dioxide to the temperature treatment enhanced the thermal limit susceptibility of C. sasakii to $46^{\circ}C$. CATTS device was constructed to automatically control $CO_2$ concentration and temperature with real-time monitoring both in the chamber and in the fruit. The larvae internally infesting apples were tested using the CATTS device and showed 100% lethality after 60 min exposure to a treatment of $46^{\circ}C$ under 15% $CO_2$ in the chamber. Relatively long exposure may be due to the deviation between the ramping temperature ($0.35^{\circ}C$/min) of the chamber and the ramping temperature (0.12-$0.23^{\circ}C$/min) inside apple fruit, where the tested larvae were located. This study suggests a possibility that CATTS can be applied as a quarantine measure to kill the larvae of C. sasakii locating inside the apples.

  • The objective of our study was the evaluation of pathogenicity of a local strain of Mamestra brassicae nucleopolyhedrovirus-K1 (MabrNPV-K1) derived from a diseased larva of M. brassicae found in Korea. The effect of temperature and larval instar on the pathogenicity and production of MabrNPV-K1 was determined under laboratory conditions. The median lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) values of MabrNPV-K1 for 3rd instar larvae were $3.7\times10^4$ PIBs/larva at $20^{\circ}C$, $9.9\times10^2$ PIBs/larva at $25^{\circ}C$ and $3.8\times10^2$ PIBs/larva at $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The $LC_{50}$ for the 4th instar larvae was similar to that for the 3rd instar larvae. However, the pathogenicity to the 3rd instar larvae was higher than that to the 4th instar larvae. The median lethal time ($LT_{50}$) values of MabrNPV-K1 were 11.4 to 5.0 days at $30^{\circ}C$ and 18.3 to 5.5 days at $25^{\circ}C$ for the 3rd instar larvae. The $LT_{50}$ value was lowered as temperature went up to $30^{\circ}C$ and dependent on viral concentration. In production efficiency of MabrNPV-K1 using M. brassicae larvae, the mortality of the 3rd instar larvae was 100% when inoculated with $1.0\times10^5$ PIBs/larva and the yield of MabrNPV-K1 was maximal. Regarding the mortality, yield of polyhedra, inoculation doses and required time, the $1.0\times10^4$PIBs/larva at $30^{\circ}C$ was determined as optimal conditions producing polyhedra efficiently.

  • In this study, we have performed several tests for composite plastic materials to be applied on interior materials of a vehicle to identify their combustion characteristics using cone calorimeter, smoke density chamber and toxicity index chamber. We have prepared a total of 12 samples for 4 major parts of a vehicle wherein each major part has 3 different materials. The results of cone calorimeter test showed ignition time of PVC sheet and PVC leather were 2s. The 8 samples showed under less than 10s of ignition time. The sample comprising Nylon and PE had the biggest maximum heat release rate of 635 $kW/m^2$. The sample comprising Rubber showed the smallest maximum heat release rate but with the biggest total heat release. The results of smoke density chamber test showed the sample that is made up with Rubber had the biggest specific optical smoke density. The sample comprising PVC leather and PUR showed the biggest VOF4 which enables the initial smoke production. The results of toxicity index test showed that all samples contained carbon dioxide content exceeding its lethal concentration. The sample comprising PVC showed high content of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide. The PVC sheet showed the biggest toxicity index calculated by using lethal concentration and test results. Toxicity index of all sample wes over 1.

  • The insecticide p-nitropheny diethyl thiophospate is alse known by the symbol E.605 and a legion of trade names including “parathion”. The insecticide is widely used in agriculture, but it is highly toxic and now clear that parathion behaves like a cholinergic drug by inhibiting the enzyme cholinesterase. In order to know acute toxicity and the changes of glucose concentrations and activity according to time lapsed in female mice given orally single with the half dose to $LD_{50}$ of parathion, glucose contents and cholinesterase activities in serum as well as cholinesterase activities in whole brain and spinal cord were investigated, otherwise median lethal dose ($LD_{50}$) of parathion given orally against female mice was determined. The results obtained were summerized as follows ; 1. $LD_{50}$ value of parathion given orally to female mice was 7.1mg/kg(95% confidence limits, 3.8-13.1mg/kg) 2. The inhibition rate of cholinesterase activities in serum of parathion-administrated mice according to time lapsed were peakly decreased to 61% after 30 minutes in comparison to control group, but activities were completely recovered after 48 hours. 3. The inhibition rate of cholinesterase activities in whole brain of parathion-administrated mice according to time lapsed were peakly decreased to 49% after 2 hours in completely recovered after 24 hours. 4. The inhibition rate of cholinesterase activities in spinal cord of parathion-administrated mice according to time lapsed were peakly decreased to 57% after 2 hours in comparison to control group, but activities were completely recovered after 48 hours. 5. The changes of glucose contents in serum of parathion-administrated mice according to time lapsed and in directly after death due to parathion poisoning were no significantly difference.
