  • This paper describes a new pattern classifier neural network to extract the feature from a letter. The proposed pattern classifier is based on relative distance, which is measure between an input datum and the center of cluster group. So, the proposed classifier neural network is called relative neural network(RNN). According to definitions of the distance and the learning rule, the structure of RNN is designed and the pseudo code of the algorithm is described. In feature extraction of letter, RNN, in spite of deletion of learning rate, resulted in the identical performance with those of winner-take-all(WTA), and self-organizing-map(SOM) neural network. Thus, it is shown that RNN is suitable to extract the feature of a letter.

  • This paper presents an arificial neuro-fuzzy technique based prtial discharge (PD) pattern classifier to power system application. This may require a complicated analysis method employ -ing an experts system due to very complex progressing discharge form under exter-nal stress. After referring briefly to the developments of artificical neural network based PD measurements, the paper outlines how the introduction of new emerging technology has resulted in the design of a number of PD diagnostic systems for practical applicaton of residual lifetime prediction. The appropriate PD data base structure and selection of learning data size of PD pattern based on fractal dimentsional and 3-D PD-normalization, extraction of relevant characteristic fea-ture of PD recognition are discussed. Some practical aspects encountered with unknown stress in the neuro-fuzzy techniques based real time PD recognition are also addressed.

  • Recently, methods of using machine learning in artificial intelligence such as autonomous navigation and speech recognition have been actively studied. Classical image processing methods such as classical boundary detection and pattern recognition have many limitations in order to recognize a specific object or area in a digital image. However, when a machine learning method such as deep-learning is used, Can be obtained. However, basically, a large amount of learning data must be secured for machine learning such as deep-learning. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the machine learning for area classification when the amount of data is very small, such as aerial photographs for environmental analysis. In this study, we apply a transfer-learning technique that can be used when the dataset size of the input image is small and the shape of the input image is not included in the category of the training dataset.

  • In this paper, we consider a multilayer neural network, with a single hidden layer. Error backpropagation learning method used widely in multilayer neural networks has a possibility of local minima due to the inadequate weights and the insufficient number of hidden nodes. So we propose a fuzzy supervised learning algorithm by using self-generation that self-generates hidden nodes by the compound fuzzy single layer perceptron and modified ART1. From the input layer to hidden layer, a modified ART1 is used to produce nodes. And winner take-all method is adopted to the connection weight adaptation, so that a stored pattern for some pattern gets updated. The proposed method has applied to the student identification card images. In simulation results, the proposed method reduces a possibility of local minima and improves learning speed and paralysis than the conventional error backpropagation learning algorithm.

  • Recently, remote education systems for web-based teaching-studying are rapidly increased. Also, a request for customized courseware suitable for individual learner's level and learning pattern is increasing. But, most remote education systems do not provide customized learning service fit for each learner's level and lots of learners easily lose their interest in studying. Therefore, a lot of researchers have tried to provide personalized customized learning service by analyzing leaner's level and learning pattern automatically with agents. In this paper, we designed and implemented a customized courseware for studying the computer application. There are four agents such as professor, assistant, student, and monitor agent in CCA and they cooperate with each other to provide learning contents suited to each learner's level.

  • In this paper we show a new learning algorithm for pattern classification. This algorithm considered a scheme to find a solution to a problem of incremental learning algorithm when the structure becomes too complex by noise patterns included in learning data set. Our approach for this problem uses a pruning method which terminates the learning process with a predefined criterion. In this process, an iterative model with 3 layer feedforward structure is derived from the incremental model by an appropriate manipulations. Notice that this network structure is not full-connected between upper and lower layers. To verify the effectiveness of pruning method, this network is retrained by EBP. From this results, we can find out that the proposed algorithm is effective, as an aspect of a system performence and the node number included in network structure.

  • This study proposes a method to effectively teaching technic for pattern development and virtual garment manufacturing by adopting the K-MOOC platform for the Apparel Pattern CAD curriculum. According to K-MOOC guidelines, Apparel Pattern CAD curriculum were developed and presented through the K-MOOC platform. A questionnaire survey was utilized to evaluate K-MOOC platform features in terms of learner satisfaction when adopting the 5-point Likert scale. Questionnaire survey participants included 52 college students. The result of the survey found that most of the attributes of the K-MOOC platform were highly rated in terms of interaction and learning effectiveness. The user interface of the K-MOOC platform were shown to be satisfactory in terms of usability. Participants gave a positive assessment of the benefits of online lectures when comparing online and offline lectures. In particular, the preference for online lectures in computer-related courses such as CAD was higher than the offline. It was concluded that the Apparel Pattern CAD curriculum based on the K-MOOC platform was effective and satisfactory for learners in various aspects.

  • For pattern recognition for machine learning, the larger the amount of learning data, the better its performance. However, it is not always possible to secure a large amount of learning data with the types and information of patterns that must be detected in daily life. Therefore, it is necessary to significantly inflate a small data set for general machine learning. In this study, we study techniques to augment data so that machine learning can be performed. A representative method of performing machine learning using a small data set is the transfer learning technique. Transfer learning is a method of obtaining a result by performing basic learning with a general-purpose data set and then substituting the target data set into the final stage. In this study, a learning model trained with a general-purpose data set such as ImageNet is used as a feature extraction set using augmented data to detect a desired pattern.

  • A hypernetwork is a generalized hypo-graph and a probabilistic graphical model based on evolutionary learning. Hypernetwork models have been applied to various domains including pattern recognition and bioinformatics. Nevertheless, conventional hypernetwork models have the limitation that they can manage data with categorical or discrete attibutes only since the learning method of hypernetworks is based on equality comparison of hyperedges with learned data. Therefore, real-valued data need to be discretized by preprocessing before learning with hypernetworks. However, discretization causes inevitable information loss and possible decrease of accuracy in pattern classification. To overcome this weakness, we propose a novel feature-wise L1-distance based method for real-valued attributes in learning hypernetwork models in this study. We show that the proposed model improves the classification accuracy compared with conventional hypernetworks and it shows competitive performance over other machine learning methods.

  • Background: Few studies have examined the effects of a forward rotating shift pattern on police employee performance and well-being. This study sought to compare sleep duration, cognitive performance, and vigilance at the start and end of each shift within a three-shift, forward rotating shift pattern, common in United Kingdom police forces. Methods: Twenty-three police employee participants were recruited from North Yorkshire Police (mean age, 43 years). The participants were all working the same, 10-day, forward rotating shift pattern. No other exclusion criteria were stipulated. Sleep data were gathered using both actigraphy and self-reported methods; cognitive performance and vigilance were assessed using a customized test battery, comprising five tests: motor praxis task, visual object learning task, NBACK, digital symbol substitution task, and psychomotor vigilance test. Statistical comparisons were conducted, taking into account the shift type, shift number, and the start and end of each shift worked. Results: Sleep duration was found to be significantly reduced after night shifts. Results showed a significant main effect of shift type in the visual object learning task and NBACK task and also a significant main effect of start/end in the digital symbol substitution task, along with a number of significant interactions. Conclusion: The results of the tests indicated that learning and practice effects may have an effect on results of some of the tests. However, it is also possible that due to the fast rotating nature of the shift pattern, participants did not adjust to any particular shift; hence, their performance in the cognitive and vigilance tests did not suffer significantly as a result of this particular shift pattern.
