Korean students ranked the 3rd out of 32 participating countries in the first cycle of PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment) science field, which assessed 15-years-old students' scientific literacy. PISA developed several variables such as parents' socio-economic status, parents' educational attainment, family wealth, and cultural possession, to investigate the effects of background variables on scientific literacy. On the other hand, motivation and engagement in science study were not given much attention, partly because science was the minor area in the first cycle of PISA. Therefore, PISA Korea developed a series of variables to collect data on students' learning motives and out-of-school activities in science as a national option. The results are as followings. First, Korea was found to be one of the PISA participating countries with the scientific literacy achievement least influenced by parents' socio-economic status, family wealth, and parents' cultural possession. Second, the degree of achievement in scientific literacy according to parents' educational attainment was in a positive correlation, similar to the overall tendency of PISA. Third, the most crucial learning motive for Korean students was their desire to develop scientific thinking abilities or obtain science knowledge. On the other hand, choosing jobs in the field of science or parental expectation was the least important learning motive. In particular, the motive for scientific learning was found to have a positive relationship with the degree of scientific literacy achievement. Therefore, the higher the students achievement, the stronger the motive for scientific learning in order to develop their ability to think scientifically or acquire science knowledge. Fourth, Korean students were shown to participate very little in out-of-school scientific activities other than watching TV programs related to science. Whatever the activities may be, the more actively involved students are in out-of-school scientific activities, the higher their scientific literacy achievement. Fifth, Korean girls were rather passive compared to boys in all areas, including science learning motive and out-of-school scientific activities. The gender difference was especially more pronounced in out-of-school scientific activities with wider gaps in such activities as reading scientific books or articles and visiting science-related web sites.
The paper examined effect of age cohort on life cycle financial planning. A total of 990 questionnaires were distributed with a 55.2% return rate. Seven hypotheses were analysed using hierarchical and ordinary regression analysis. The results revealed that age cohort variables made significant contribution to life cycle financial planning as well as personal orientation towards retirement planning, particularly the younger age cohort. Age cohorts do affect personal orientation towards retirement planning with the confidence level making a significant impact. Current financial resources do have a strong positive impact on consumption for all age cohorts. On the other hand, no significant effect was found between age cohorts and current financial resources but older age cohorts were relatively more significant predictors. The implication was that not only should their individual perceptions of financial planning become an increasingly important part of people's long-term commitment throughout their life-cycle, it must also assume the role as a self-directed life-long learning process, in view of the ever-changing and complicated financial environment.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the current studies and research methods about Learning Progressions disseminated to several countries including the U.S. since 2006. It also provides a methodological base to investigate learning progressions in science by introducing a case study of learning progression conducted in Korea. For this study, we described several features of current studies on learning progressions in the U.S., and reported the common ways and sequences employed in examining learning progressions especially with respect to assessment for learning. Learning progressions are descriptions of developmental pathways of learning a topic, in which science knowledge is used in students' engaging in science practices. Each learning progression consists of upper anchor, lower anchor, and intermediate steps that connect both anchors. In investigating a learning progression, researchers usually utilize Wilson's four building blocks of assessment system based on the assessment triangle. This kind of method was also applied in investigating the learning progression for water cycle in this study. We discussed implication and consideration for the future research on learning progressions in science in Korea.
The vicious cycle of over-education has been made. That is, higher education enrollment rate is high, but university graduate employment rate is low. To eliminate this cycle and relieve youth unemployment and young people to enter the labor market early, dual education and training system is needed. This dual system can support working and learning in parallel. So, worker can get the opportunity pre-employment and post-learning and improve his/her job skills. Recent MOOC (Massive Open On-line Course), a new form of online education system, has emerged. MOOC combines education, entertainment and social networking, and emphasize the interaction between faculty and student and between students. The educational contents of MOOC are available free of charge. Using newly changed online education environments we can effectively provide knowledge and skills. In technology and engineering education hands-on training is necessary. In order to support work based learning dual system for worker to work and learn in parallel, we should build the multi-learning system to combine the online education and campus hands-on practice.

An active control for the swing of crane systems is very important for increasing the productivity. This article introduces the control for the position and the swing of a crane using the fuzzy learning method. Because the crane is a multi-variable system, learning is done to control both position and swing of the crane. Also the fuzzy control rules are separately acquired with the loading and unloading situation of the crane for more accurate control. And We designed controller by fuzzy learning method, and then compare fuzzy learning method with LQR. The result of simulations shows that the crane is controlled better than LQR for a very large swing angle of 1 radian within nearly one cycle.
There is no doubt that science -and, therefore, science education- is central to the lives of all (NGSS, 2013). This manuscript focuses on ideas in astronomy that are at the foundation of elementary students' understanding of the discipline: the apparent motion of the sun explaining the day / night cycle on Earth. According to prior research demonstrating that neither children nor adults hold a scientific understanding of the big ideas of astronomy (NRC, 1996), understanding of concepts may base students' progress towards more advanced understanding in the domain of astronomy. We have analyzed the logic of the domain and synthesized prior research assessing children's spatial representation from an earth- and a space based perspective to develop a set of learning trajectories that describe how students' initial ideas about apparent celestial motion as they take school science can be build upon. In this study elementary students' representations were compared by their resident context including urban and rural. This study may present a first look at the use of a learning progression framework in analyzing the structure of astronomy education. We discuss how this work may eventually lead towards the development and empirical testing of how children learn to describe and explain apparent patterns of celestial motion.

This paper proposes a novel of a personalized Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) system based on learner's cognitive abilities related to foreign language proficiency. In this CALL system, a strategy of retrieval learning, a method of learning memory cycle, and a method of repeated learning are applied for effective vocabulary memorization. The system is designed to offer personalized learning based on cognitive abilities related to the human language process. For this, the proposed CALL system has a cognitive diagnosis module which can measure five types of cognitive abilities. The results of this diagnosis are used to create dynamic learning scenarios for personalized learning and to evaluate user performance in the learning. This system is also designed in order to have users be able to create learning word lists and to share them simply with various functions based on open APIs. Additionally, through experiments, it has shown that this system helps students to learn English vocabulary effectively and enhances their foreign language skills.
Machine learning algorithms have made immense contributions in various fields including sonar and radar applications. Recently developed Cycle-Consistency Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN), a variant of GAN has been successfully used for unpaired image-to-image translation. We present a modified CycleGAN for translation of underwater ship engine sounds with high perceptual quality. The proposed network is composed of an improved generator model trained to translate underwater audio from one vessel type to other, an improved discriminator to identify the data as real or fake and a modified cycle-consistency loss function. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the proposed CycleGAN are performed on publicly available underwater dataset ShipsEar by evaluating and comparing Mel-cepstral distortion, pitch contour matching, nearest neighbor comparison and mean opinion score with existing algorithms. The analysis results of the proposed network demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network.
The image-to-image translation is one of the deep learning applications using image data. In this paper, we aim at improving the performance of object transfiguration which transforms a specific object in an image into another specific object. For object transfiguration, it is required to transform only the target object and maintain background images. In the existing results, however, it is observed that other parts in the image are also transformed. In this paper, we have focused on the structure of artificial neural networks that are frequently used in the existing methods and have improved the performance by adding constraints to the exiting structure. We also propose the advanced structure that combines the existing structures to maintain their advantages and complement their drawbacks. The effectiveness of the proposed methods are shown in experimental results.
As a preliminary approach to developing a bedside teaching program, this study analyzed the instructional models that have been suggested for bedside teaching. The objects of analysis were four models: the 'Cox model,' which is composed of an experience cycle and an explanation cycle; the 'best teaching practice model' by Janicik and Fletcher; the 'twelve tips to improve bedside teaching' by Ramani; and the SNNAPS model for outpatient education by Wolpaw, Wolpaw, and Papp. This study was conducted in three steps. First, we identified the major components of each model and analyzed their characteristics and limitations. Second, we compared each model in terms of four aspects: the learner, learning interaction, learning context, and organization management. Third, on the basis of prior analysis, the possibilities and potential problems of the models were explored. Based on this review of the existing instructional design models, we proposed an additional four key elements for designing a bedside teaching program: multi-layered learners, various learning environments and contexts, time management by using media, and self-directed design.
