Processed Panax ginseng, Sun Ginseng, Decreases Oxidative Damage Induced by tert-butyl Hydroperoxide via Regulation of Antioxidant Enzyme and Anti-apoptotic Molecules in HepG2 Cells

  • Potential antioxidant effect of processed ginseng (sun ginseng, SG) on oxidative stress generated by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) was investigated in HepG2 cells. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage test demonstrated that SG dose-dependently prevents a loss of cell viability against t-BHP-induced oxidative stress. Also, SG treatment dose-dependently relieved the increment of activities of hepatic enzymes, such as aspartate aminotrasferase and alanine aminotransferase, and lipid peroxidation mediated by t-BHP treatment in HepG2 cells. SG increased the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. However, high dose of SG treatment caused decrease in mRNA level of glutathione peroxidase as compared to low dosage of SG-treated cells. The gene expression of glutathione reductase was found to be slightly increased by SG treatment. In addition, SG extract attributed its hepaprotective effect by inducing the mRNA level of bcl-2 and bcl-xL but reducing that of bax. But, the gene expression of bad showed no significant change in SG-treated HepG2 cells. These findings suggest that SG has hepatoprotective effect by showing reduction of LDH release, activities of hepatic enzymes and lipid peroxidation and regulating the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and apoptosis-related molecules against oxdative stress caused by t-BHP in HepG2 cells.

  • In this paper, highly linear power amplifier using bandpass filter based on metamaterial and Composite Right- / Left-Handed (CRLH) structure is proposed. The proposed bandpass filter consist of the series capacitor, series microstrip line and the parallel inductor, parallel microstrip line. The insertion loss is minimized at operation frequency and the $2^{nd}$ harmonic is suppressed by the bandpass filter using the CRLH structure. And we improved the Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR) using the characteristic of the proposed bandpass filter. At 2.14 GHz, we have obtained the output power of 38.83 dBm, the $2^{nd}$ harmonic of .61.33 dBc, the $3^{rd}$ IMD of .54.67 dBc, and ACLR of .51.33 dBc at 5 MHz offset, -56.50 dBc at 10 MHz offset, respectively.

  • This paper reports on the results of weathering test, tracking test and salt-fog test of various kinds of cycloaliphatic epoxy systems. UV irradiation dramatically induced the loss of surface hydrophobicity due to the chain scission attack at the surface under UV irradiation. It could be seen that samples containing an UV absorbent/antioxidant and a silicone oil additive have a good performance in weathering test, while ATH(alumina tri-hydrate) filled ones have high resistance against tracking failure than others. Under salt fog chamber test, specimens mixed with silicone oil are able to suppress leakage current development. It was thought that silicone oil mixed into cycloaliphatic epoxy system could lead to lower the surface energy and to retain hydrophobic properties for a long time, which are desirable for outdoor use.

Bone Cement-Augmented Percutaneous Screw Fixation for Malignant Spinal Metastases : Is It Feasible?

  • Objective : We evaluated the validity of bone cement-augmented percutaneous screw fixation for treating malignant spinal metastases. Methods : Between 2011 and 2015, 14 patients (eight men and six women) who underwent bone cement-augmented percutaneous screw fixation for malignant spinal metastases were enrolled in this study. Their life expectancy was considered to be more than one month and less than one year, based on the revised Tokuhashi scoring system. Clinical findings including the back pain scale score, functional outcome, procedure related complications, and survival were assessed preoperatively, postoperatively, and then six months after the procedure. Results : Twelve of the patients (86%) survived up to six months after the procedure. Three required mini-open decompressive laminectomy for severe epidural compression. Bone cement-augmented percutaneous screw fixation was performed one level above, one level below, and at the pathologic level itself. The mean operation time was 60 minutes (45-180) and blood loss was less than 100 mL. Prior to surgery, the mean pain score on the visual analogue scale was 8.8, while one month after the procedure, it had reduced to 3.0; this improvement was maintained until the six-month assessment in the surviving patients. All patients were able to sit within the first two days after surgery, and no patient experienced neurological deterioration at the one-month follow up after the surgery. No patient experienced screw loosening during the six months of follow-up. Asymptomatic cement leakage into the epidural space was observed in two patients, but no major complications were observed. Conclusion : For selected patients with malignant spinal metastases, bone cement-augmented percutaneous screw fixation can provide significant pain relief and improve quality of life.

Lean Combustion Characteristics with Hydrogen Addition in a LPG Fuelled Spark Ignition Engine (LPG엔진에서 수소연료 보조분사에 의한 희박연소특성 연구)

  • The basic effects of hydrogen addition for engine performance and emission were investigated in single cylinder research engine. Seven commercial injectors were tested to choose a suitable injector for hydrogen injection prior to its engine implementation. The hydrogen fuel leakage and flow rate were evaluated for each injector and KN3-1(Keihin, CO.) showed the best performance for hydrogen fuel. At the higher excess air ratio(${\lambda}=1.7$, 2.0), the better combustion stability was found with hydrogen addition even though its effect was small at lower excess air ratio (${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3). Stable operation of the engine was even guaranteed at ${\lambda}=2.0$, if the amount of hydrogen gas was near 15% of total energy. In the lean region, ${\lambda}>1.3$, thermal efficiency was improved slightly while it was not clearly observed at ${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3. It is considered that, in some cases, high temperature environment due to hydrogen combustion caused further heat loss to surroundings. Except for ${\lambda}=1.0$, with larger amount of hydrogen addition, CO was reduced drastically but it was emitted more at the leaner region. Nitric oxides(NOx) was increased a little more with hydrogen addition at ${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3. However, at ${\lambda}>1.3$ its relative amount of emission was low. In addition, the amount of NOx was continuously decreased with hydrogen addition, but, at ${\lambda}=2.0$ the amount of NOx was lowered to 1/100 of that of ${\lambda}=1.0$. THC emission was significantly increased as air/fuel ratio was raised to leaner region due to misfire and partial burn.

  • Air heater used in power plant helps increase the thermal efficiency of the boiler by recovering the heat from the boiler flue gas and thus preventing the loss of useful heat. This study investigates the effect of preventive maintenance on the performance of the air heater in a power plant. Performance indexes for the air heater are calculated to observe the changes in the performance and operation status of the air heater before and after preventive maintenance. The major performance indexes considered are temperature efficiency of the flue gas side, air leakage rate, heat recovery rate, heat transmission rate, and heat capacity ratio. The performance of the air heater is evaluated before and after preventive maintenance; our results show that all the abovementioned performance indexes are improved after the maintenance.

Surgical Results of Esophageal Cancer (식도암의 외과적 요법에대한 임상적 고찰)

  • From January 1984 to December 1991, One hundred sixty five patients with carcinomoa of the esophagus were treated surgically at the department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital. Among them, hospital records were available in 121 patients and were included in this study. There were 115 men and 6 women, with ages ranging from 40 years to 79 years[mean age of 59.2 years]. The most frequent preoperative symptoms included dysphagia[72.7%], weight loss[60.3%], chest pain or discomfort[14.9%], general malaise[13.2%]. All were treated surgically: 100 patients were managed by curative or palliative resection with reconstruction, and 6 by palliative bypass surgery. In 15 patients, explorative thoracotomy or laparotomy was only done due to unresectability. [operability: 87.6%, resectability: 82.6%] All specimens[those from resectable 100 cases] were sent to pathology, and histopathologic examinations were done; squamous cell carcinomas were found in 95 cases, adenocarcinoma in l. Adenosquamous carcinomas were found in 3, and malignant melanoma in l. Postoperative complications occurred in 34 cases; anastomotic site leakage[10], which was followed by empyema in 9 of them, wound problem[7], hepatic failure[6], pneumonia [3], post-operative bleeding[3], chylothorax[2], post-operative stricture[2], sepsis[1], and tracheobronchial fistula[1]. Hospital deaths were in 6 cases[Hospital mortality: 5.0%]. During the follow up period, 26 patients were proven to be recurrence of cancer locally or distantly. The one, two, and five-year actuarial survival raf.es were 71.3$\pm$4.5%, 57.4$\pm$5.6%, 34.7$\pm$8.9%, respectively. The data from this study suggested that esophagectomy with reconstruction of gastrointestinal tract could be performed with a low operative mortality and a few serious postoperative complications and achieved reasonable long term palliation for carcinoma of the esophagus.

  • FECAPS(ferroelectric capacitors) have been fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering deposition of 3000$\AA$ PZT thin films on the Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates and post-annealing with the temperature of $550^{\circ}C$~$650^{\circ}C$ for 10 sec~50 sec in a RTA system. The electrical characteristics of the fabricated capacitors showed the highest dielectric constant and remanent polarization[${\varepsilon_r(1kHz)$=690, $2P_r$(-5V~5V sweep)=22$\mu$C/$ \textrm{cm}^2$] in the samples annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec, while the lowest tangent loss and leakage current [$tan\delta(\ge10kHz)\le0.02, \; J_i(5V)=3\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$]in the samples annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec.

A Study on Dynamic Characteristics of Directional Control Logic Valve (방향제어 조직밸브의 동특성에 관한 연구)

  • A cartridge type hydraulic logic valve consists of simple two port valve whose poppet is closed or opened by means of pressure signal of a pilot line. Accordingly, the logic valve can be used not only for direction, flow and pressure control purpose but also for versatile function valve which enables all above mentioned functions. In addition, the valve has little internal leakage and pressure loss, superior response characteristics and easiness in making small block type valve. The above mentioned good performances being recognized recently, the logic valve has been used widely in the large scale hydraulic system such as a hydraulic press system, for the performance requirements of high speed operation and precise control characteristics. However, there are scarce reports until now, except for a few ones from Aachen Institute of Technology in West Germany, so it is necessary to be studied on development and investigation for practical application. This paper showed that the static and dynamic characteristics of a logic valve when the logic valve is used for directional control, to investigate the relations between the valve operating characteristics and the valve design conditions. From the above mentioned procedure, it was ascertained that the valve operation characteristics obtained by numerical analysis showed good agreements with experimental results. The representative results obtained are as follows; 1. During the valve is closing, the poppet velocity is almost constant in the logic valve. 2. The pilot pressure P sub(3) and the resistance R in the pilot line have much influences on the valve operation time. 3. Spring strength have not such a severe influence on the valve operating time. 4. The operation characteristics of the logic valve can be estimated with good accuracy comparatively by numerical analysis with the equations describing poppet motion.

  • The bent-axis type piston pump which is driven by the piston rod works on the way that the piston rod drives the cylinder block, so the taper angle of the piston rod and the swivel angle between the cylinder block and the shaft are very important design factors. If the above factors cannot satisfy the conditions of optimum design, the friction loss between the cylinder bore and the piston increases, and the pump can even fail to work under conditions of severe friction and wear. Since the piston reciprocates in the cylinder bore with high velocity, and at the same time it rotates on its own axis and revolves on the center of the cylinder block, the decrease of the volume efficiency generated on account of the leakage between the cylinder bore and the piston. Therefore, to prevent this case, the piston ring is designed at the end of the piston, and the friction characteristics between the piston ring and the cylinder bore are in need of research due to its great influence on the performance of piston pump. Thus, in this paper, the elastic hydraulic oil's lubrication analyses of the film thickness, the pressure distribution, and the friction force, and so on, have been performed, and the lubrication characteristics between the piston ring and the cylinder bore are explored by the results of the numerical analysis, and it is contributed to realize the higher efficiency and the more advanced performance of the bent-axis type piston pump.
