The possibility of using carica papaya leaf powder for removal of copper from wastewater as a low cost adsorbent was explored. Different parameters that affect the adsorption process like initial concentration of metal ion, time of contact, adsorbent quantity and pH were evaluated and the outcome of the study was tested using adsorption isotherm models. A maximum of 90%-94.1% copper removal was possible from wastewater having low concentration of the metal using papaya leaf powder under optimum conditions by conducting experimental studies. The biosorption of copper ion was influenced by pH and outcome of experimental results indicate the optimum pH as 7.0 for maximum copper removal. Copper distribution between the solid and liquid phases in batch studies was described by isotherms like Langmuir adsorption and Freundlich models. The adsorption process was better represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of copper was measured to be 24.51 mg/g through the Langmuir model. Pseudo-second order rate equation was better suited for the adsorption process. A dynamic mode study was also conducted to analyse the ability of papaya leaf powder to remove copper (II) ions from aqueous solution and the breakthrough curve was described by an S profile. Present study revealed that papaya leaf powder can be used for the removal of copper from the wastewater and low cost water treatment techniques can be developed using this adsorbent.
This study was conducted to standardize ingredient ratio and preparation method of mafor traditional special kimchies in kyungsang province, korea. There were about 35 varieties of special kimchi in Kyungsang province. Six varieties of them such as burdock kimchi, wild leek kimchi, green thread onion kimchi, perilla leaf kimchi, Godulbaegi(Korean wild lettuce) kimchi, and red pepper leaf kimchi were selected, because they tasted good and the physiological functions of their main ingredients were excellent. The ingredient ratios of the selected special kimchi were standardized through surveying hereditary preparation of some families in kyungsang province and using the literatures including cooking books. The standardized ingredient ratio of the burdock kimchi was 15.1 pickled anchovy juice, 6.8 red pepper powder, 5.7 garlic, 2.2 ginger, 18.0 rice flour paste, 13.5 green thread onion, and 1.2 sesame seed in proportion to 100 of burdock. The standardized preparation step of the selected special kimchies was similar except some preprocessing methods of main ingredients. The diagonally cut-up burdock ws usually parboiled or soaked in salted water, then it was mixed with the other ingredients. Wild leek and green thread onion were usually pickled with salt or pickled anchovy juice. Sometimes the green thread onion pickled was dried in the sun. General preprocessing of perilla leaf, Korean wild lettuce, and red pepper leaf was soaking them in salted water for about 5-10 days. Sometimes red pepper leaf was heated with steam and dried in the sun, then it was mixed with the other ingredients.

Leaf characteristics of mature 2, 3 and 4-year-old North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) leaves on fruiting and non-fruiting(NF) plants were studied. Leaflets of the 2-year-old plants had the lowest fresh and dry weight, area, volume and internal gas volume. Inflorescence removal in 3-year-old plants did not affect leaf characteristics or ginsenoside concentration but in 4-year-old plants it increased leaf fresh (38.6%) and dry (43.9%) weight, leaf area (29.1%), specific leaf mass (11.4%), leaf volume (43.1%), and leaf thickness (12.1%), and decreased leaf water content (6.2%). Cultivated ginseng, although an understorey plant, had the specific leaf mass, 35.6 g $m^{-2}$ (range, 36 to 39 g $m^{-2}$) and a chlorophyll a/b ratio of 2.40 to 2.61, both suggesting the ability to perform like a sunny habitat plant. Also, specific leaf mass of 35.6 g $m^{-2}$ is similar to that reported for perennial plants, 36.8 g $m^{-2}$, rather than that for annuals, 30.9 g $m^{-2}$.

Background: Measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) is useful for detection the ability of plants to tolerate environmental stresses such as drought, and excessive sunlight. Cnidium officinale Makino is highly sensitive to water stress and excessive sunlight. In this study, we evaluated the effect of soil water and shade treatment on the photosynthesis and leaf temperature change of C. officinale. Methods and Results: C. officinale was cultivated under uniform irrigation for 1 week drought stress (no watering) for 6 days. A significant decrease in CF was observed on the 5th day of withholding water (approximately 6% of soil water content) regardless of shading. Notably, the Rfd_lss parameter (CF decrease rates) with and without shade treatment was reduced by 73.1% and 56.5% respectively, at 6 days compared with those at the initial stage (0 day). The patterns of the degree of CF parameters corresponded to those of the soil water content and difference between leaf temperature (Ts) and air temperature (Ta). Meanwhile, CF parameters recovered to the 3 - 4 days levels after re-watering, while the soil water potential was completely restored. The suitable soil water content for C. officinale optimal growth was between -5 kPa and -10 kPa in this experiment. Conclusions: Lack of soil water in the cultivation of C. officinale, even with shading, decreased latent heat cooling through transpiration. As a result, heat dissipation declined, and the plant was subjected to drought stress. Soil water content plays a major role in photosynthesis and leaf temperature in C. officinale.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the rheological characteristics of medium wheat flour mixed with bamboo leaf and lotus leaf powders. Rheological properties of the mixed flours were tested based on falling number, color, RVA, farinogram, and rheofermentometer analyses. Falling numbers increased with addition of bamboo leaf and lotus leaf powders. The L values of all mixed flours were less than that of control. The 1% mixed flour sample containing bamboo leaf and lotus leaf powders was not significantly different from 3% mixed flour. The a values of the mixed flour decreased as bamboo and lotus powders increased, whereas b values increased. Addition of bamboo leaf and lotus leaf powders to flour reduced peak viscosity, holding strength, and final viscosity. The set back values of mixed wheat flour containing bamboo leaf powder were lower than those of mixed wheat flour containing lotus leaf powder, suggesting that bamboo leaf powder suppressed retrogradation of flour compared to lotus leaf powder. In the farinogram, the water absorption and consistency of the flours containing bamboo and lotus leaf powders increased, whereas development time and stability decreased. The fermentation time of dough with lotus leaf powder was less than that of dough with bamboo leaf powder.
Growth response and evapotranspiration of tobacco as to each soil moisture condition treated with different height of ground water table such as 30cm, 100cm, 170cm, and 230cm were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Soil water potential in the rhizosphere (25cm depth from surface) treated with ground water table (G.W.T) of 230 cm was less than -6.5 bar at 60 days after transplanting. 2. Dry weight of leaves per plant was the highest in the pot treated with 100 cm G.W.T and was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T.. Leaves/Stem ratio of dry weight was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T. This would show that extension of leaves as compared with elongation of stem was suppressed. .3. In the roster stress condition of 230 cm G.W.T., extension of leaves was continued until the latter growth stage, Relative growth rate of leaf area per plant of the pot with 30 cm G.W.T. was the highest through all growth period after fixation of G.W.7., but owing to lower density of leaf, the dry weight of leaves per plant was less rather than that of the pot with 170 cm G.W.T. at 64 days after transplanting. 4. The highest evapotranspiration per plant per day was shown at the 45th day after transplanting in the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. and at 60 days in the pots with 170cm and 230cm G.W.T respectively. 5. In the soil moisture conditions with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T., evapotranspiration per plant per hour was much higher in the daytime that at night as well as in clear day than in rain-cloudy day owing to loner relative humidity , but in the water stress condition with 230 cm G.W.T., that was much lower. 6. Total evapotranspiration per plant during the whole growing period of 64 days was in order of 30cm > 100 cm > 170 cm > 230 cm G.W.T.. Total evapotranspiration for 34 days after fixation of G.W.T was much higher at night than in the daytime in case of water stress conditions i.e 170cm and 230cm G.W.T. but in normal condition of the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. that was much higher in the daytime than at night. 7. Leaf water potential of the 3rd and 6th leaf from top at 64 days after transplanting was in order of 100cm > 30 cm > 170cm > 230cm G.W.T. The reason why leaf water potential in the pot with 30cm was less than that in the pot with 100cm G.W.T. would be the abnormal turgidity with low density of cell substrates by the excess water absorption in the pot with 30cm G.W.T..
This study aim to investigate fundamentally the growth and physiological responses of tomato plants in responses to two different levels of water deficit, a weak drought stress (-25 kPa) and a severe drought stress (-100 kPa) in soil. The two levels of water deficit were maintained using a micro-irrigation system consisted of soil sensors for the real-time monitoring of soil water content and irrigation modules in a greenhouse experiment. Soil water contents were fluctuated throughout the 30 days treatment period but differed between the two treatments with the average -47 kPa in -25 kPa set treatment and the -119 kPa in -100 kPa set treatment. There were significant differences in plant height between the two different soil water statuses in plant height without differences of the number of nodes. The plants grown in the severe water-deficit treatment had greater accumulation of biomass than the plants in the weak water-deficit treatment. The severe water-deficit treatment (-119 kPa) also induced greater leaf area and leaf dry weight of the plants than the weak water-deficit treatment did, even though there was no difference in leaf area per unit dry weight. These results of growth parameters tested in this study indicate that the severe drought could cause an adaptation of tomato plants to the drought stress with the enhancement of biomass and leaf expansion without changes of leaf thickness. Greater relative water content of leaves and lower osmotic potential of sap expressed from turgid leaves were recorded in the severe water deficit treatment than in the weak water deficit treatment. This finding also postulated physiological adaptation to be better water status under drought stress. The drought imposition affected significantly on photosynthesis, water use efficiency and stomatal conductance of tomato plants. The severe water-deficit treatment increased PSII activities and water use efficiency, but decreased stomatal conductance than the weak water-deficit treatment. However, there were no differences between the two treatments in total photosynthetic capacity. Finally, there were no differences in the number and biomass of fruits. These results suggested that tomato plants have an ability to make adaptation to water deficit conditions through changes in leaf morphology, osmotic potentials, and water use efficiency as well as PSII activity. These adaptation responses should be considered in the screening of drought tolerance of tomato plants.
We compared the functional traits of leaf blades and culms of common reed (Phragmites australis) in four habitat types of distinguished environments such as temperature, precipitation, water characteristics, and indices related to biomass production (montane fen, MF; riparian marsh, RM; lagoon, LG; and salt marsh, SM). We also examined the relationships between the functional traits within and among populations. Four populations showed remarkable differences in the functional traits of leaf blades and culms. MF and RM had relatively tall (> 300 cm) and thick (> 8 mm) culms bearing long leaf blades (> 40 cm), whereas LG and SM had relatively shorter and thinner culms bearing shorter leaf blades than MF and RM. Some relationships between the functional traits of leaf blades and culms showed negative or not significant correlations within the population, whereas most of the relationships between the functional traits showed positive correlations particularly when all the data from four populations was included into the correlation analysis.
The design theory of roller gate has been systematized laying more emphasis on practical formulas than theoretical ones and the design procedure of the existing gate facilites is reviewed and analyaed on economical viewpoint and safety factor. The design theory of timoshenko, the thechnical standards for hydraulic gate and penstock of Japan, and the design standards for waterworks structures of Germany are applied to the study of optimal design of a gate leaf. In this study, gate leaf which is now being operated for water control at the seadike, estuary dam and reservoir dam are adopted as a mode, and a new design method by the computer is proposed through the variation of design elements within practical ranges. As a result, safety factor and economical design can be made by using T-beams to the horizontal and vertical beam of the gate leaf instead of H-beams used in the existing seadike roller gate at Asan, and total weight of gate leaf is reduced by the present optimization.
One of the most concerned topics in ecology is the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, there are few field studies, carried out in forests, although many studies have been done in controlled experiments in grasslands. In this paper, we describe the relationship pattern between three facets of diversity and productivity at Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest (RFWSF) in Bangladesh, which is the only remaining fresh water swamp forest of the country. Sixty sample plots were selected from RFWSF and included six functional traits including leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), tree height, bark thickness and wood density. In analyzing TD, we used Shannon diversity and richness indices, functional diversity was measured by Rao's quadratic entropy (Rao 1982) and Faith's (1992) index was used for phylogenetic diversity (PD). It was found that, TD, FD and PD were positively related with productivity (basal area) due to resource use complementarity but surprisingly the best predictor of tree productivity was FD. The results contribute to the understanding the effects of biodiversity loss and it is essential for conservation decision-making and policy-making of Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest.
